About the program

Empowering Communities: Care and Assistance for Deprived and Vulnerable Children (ECCACHILD). The Project targets marginalised children in communities, who have slipped through the net of government and social protection, by providing basic needs, education and health care.

By identifying those in serious need, AFAWI aims to ensure that educational and individual care is provided. The ECCACHILD project will work to expand the capabilities of vulnerable children and their families, whilst also empowering communities to strengthen and monitor long-term progress.

AFAWI therefore has been conducting interviews and assessments of vulnerable children in small communities in order to determine the needs of those children. From the initial investigation, it has been determined that many children in Ghana are in particular in need of basic educational and health support.  As Girls especially are likely to be out of school, AFAWI primary provides much needed support for school fees, school supplies, uniforms and transportation costs to ensure the access to education.

Further some needs go beyond the educational support. We are thus working hand in hand with local officials and medical practitioners to conduct health screenings for children, that can identify previously undiagnosed problems. With proper diagnoses, we are able to assess needs very effectively and help parents and guardians to access available resources.

Additionally AFAWI has identified one of the most effective ways to provide support for children through empowering their mothers and guardians. Working in conjunction with the Livelihood team, AFAWI strives to lift women out of poverty through targeted supporting of small business entrepreneurship. Go to the LIVELIHOOD project page to read more about how empowering women will ensure their children to get the education they deserve for a brighter future.

As a volunteer, you will be supporting our experienced team in all the task mentioned above - be it in the office or on the field.

We can't wait to welcome you in Ghana!

Typical day

A working day (Mo-Thu) typically starts for our volunteers at 9:00 am at the office.

As the accommodation for our volunteers is located in the same building as our office space, the way to the work is often very short.

Depending on the daily task, the volunteers will either work in the office on planning the next project phase (including demand analyses) or write reports. We further offer internal trainings to our volunteers.

On other days, the volunteers will go out in the schools for the field work, accompanied by our experienced staff. In this project this means helping with the data collection, the organisation of health screenings and the logistical support needed for the children.

The daily working routine is thereby very diverse as we are always trying to give our volunteers an overall insight into the work of a NGO.

We normally have a lunch break together on working days if possible and the day officially ends for our volunteers at 4pm. After that, the volunteers have time to explore the city on their own or take part in our activities  (such as language and cooking classes, games night etc.).
