Are you passionate about soccer? Are you eager to get more practical coaching experience? Would you like to help develop the skills of young players from a disadvantaged background? Then coaching soccer in Ghana is the perfect opportunity for you!
This project is a fantastic chance to improve your coaching whilst also helping local children to develop their skills. You may even get the chance to play for one of the local teams in one of their friendly games at the weekend!
It would be ideal if you could spend four weeks or more on the project to get the most out of it. However, you can also join for one, two or three weeks. The project runs year-round and you can join at any time.
As a volunteer soccer coach in Ghana, you will work in and around Kumasi or other part of Ghana regions. It is fully funded by OGVO. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement:
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Prepare for training sessions with local coaches
You will meet with local soccer coaches to discuss training sessions twice a week. This will also include doing match analysis and discussing the weekly schedule. Interacting with local coaches is an excellent opportunity to learn coaching skills and trade secrets from professionals. It’s also a great way to get to know more about the strengths and weaknesses of the players you will be working with.
Teach a youth team
As a volunteer coaching soccer in Ghana, your afternoons will be dedicated to training a young team. This will include working on:
Along with the local coaches, you will also discuss and work on match strategies and coordinate practice games.
Join in local games
One of the greatest things about this volunteer project is the fact that you will be able to join in the fun!
As a soccer enthusiast yourself, you are likely to be drawn into local games in the evenings or over weekends. This will give you a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local style of soccer and offer better advice to your team.
Accompany coaches and players to professional games
You will also get the opportunity to see one of Ghana's many top division club teams - like Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko - in action. You can accompany the players to games, and discuss the match to help with their own development.
Your working week will be from Tuesday to Saturday, to accommodate weekend games. You will have Sundays and Mondays off to rest and explore.
You will start your mornings with a hearty breakfast in your host family’s home. Twice a week, you will head to the OGVO Office in the morning to meet with local coaches and plan training sessions. You will make use of public transport to get there. Our staff will accompany you on your first day and show you how to get there.
These meetings will also be a useful time to analyze past games and discuss new strategies. The coaches you work with have many years of experience. They can offer you some great insight into local soccer culture and practice.
As schools close for the day, children will start arriving at the soccer club between 4pm and 6pm. This is when the fun begins! You will spend the rest of the day teaching a young team and helping them develop basic skills and techniques.
You will be expected to help out at games on certain evenings, but mostly on Saturdays. You may even be asked to act as referee or join a game if a player gets injured. Time spent with the children will provide you with an excellent hands-on soccer coaching experience while you’re in Ghana.
On Sundays and Mondays, you will have plenty of free time to explore with your fellow volunteers and get to know your host family. Kumasi is a vibrant city with loads of interesting restaurants to try out and fun activities to get involved in.
Volunteers will be immersed in a new culture while exploring new regions, encountering new flora and fauna, as well as making new international friends. You will visit breathtaking beaches, see historical sites, visit museums, shop at amazing markets, eat delicious cuisine, and just soak up all your time in Ghana.
The price does not include visa, flight, vaccinations/immunizations, personal insurance (required), personal spending and in-country travel.
Volunteers on this program will be accommodated with a local host family, and will gain the opportunity to become immersed in the local culture and custom, improving their knowledge of the people, culture and language. Ghanaian families are renowned for their kindness and hospitality and they love to learn about different cultures. Living with a local family truly is the best way to throw oneself into the local culture and to meet people who will often become lifelong friends!
All families have been fully vetted by our team and have extensive experience hosting international volunteers. Bedrooms are private but generally shared with volunteers of the same gender. Volunteers will be provided access to a shared bathroom. Generally, your host brother, sister or mother assist you with your laundry but it is not an obligation, learn to wash your clothing’s with your hands in several buckets, enjoy the sun drying your clothes and odor the African fragrance in your clothes.
It is important to remember that the living conditions in Ghana are different from home. Most families have running water, but hot water is still uncommon in some areas. Although the accommodation is basic, this is part of the challenge and experience of volunteering in a developing country. With a little patience, and a flexible attitude, you will quickly get used to your new surroundings.
Three meals a day are provided by the home-stay families and consist mainly of traditional Ghanaian meals with some flexibility for home comforts when available.
Breakfast is usually ready by around 7am; however you can eat later if you prefer to get up late. Lunch is usually packed by your host family in a lunch box so that you can eat at your project if you wish. Dinner is usually served around 6pm.
If you have special eating needs, you can indicate that while applying. Even though special eating needs are not something we can guarantee, we will do our best to meet your needs.
