    About the program

    About the program

A Different Kind of Gap Year in Zanzibar:

The Diploma of Global Citizenship – Dolphin & Marine Conservation is an immersive 6 or 12-week Academy experience based in Zanzibar, Tanzania, combining meaningful international volunteering, practical marine conservation experience, Global Citizenship learning, personal development, cultural immersion and travel.

Think of it as travel, volunteering and learning all rolled into one.

For 6 or 12 weeks, Zanzibar becomes home. You'll live alongside an international Academy cohort, spend your weekdays working consistently within our own Dolphin Conservation Project, take part in practical workshops and cultural experiences, explore your own personal development and work towards a meaningful Legacy Project.

Around all of that, you'll experience what makes Zanzibar such an incredible place to spend part of your gap year. Think white-sand beaches, the Indian Ocean, Swahili culture, tropical island life, local food, snorkelling, Stone Town, weekend adventures and social life with your Academy cohort.

And your experience doesn't stop at the island. You'll also journey across to mainland Tanzania, travelling through the Usambara Mountains and northern Tanzania before experiencing one of the country's greatest adventures — safari.

The experience is designed to be fun, social, adventurous and genuinely meaningful, while giving you something substantial to carry forward when you return home.

Alongside the Academy, you'll complete the academic requirements of the relevant Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship, giving you an accredited outcome alongside your international practical experience.

Inspired by the Folk School Experience:

The Academy takes inspiration from the Scandinavian folk school concept: bringing young people together to live, learn, travel and grow through shared real-world experiences rather than making education something that only happens inside a classroom.

We've adapted that philosophy to something we know extremely well — international volunteering and community development in Tanzania.

After years of working with international volunteers, we've learned that ethical volunteering is a collaborative effort. Choosing an ethical, locally grounded organisation is incredibly important, but the volunteer themselves also plays a major role in whether their contribution is genuinely positive.

That's why the Academy doesn't simply send you to a placement each morning.

We provide structured guidance and Global Citizenship education alongside your practical experience, helping you understand cultural context, question assumptions, explore root causes, build meaningful relationships and think critically about what responsible and sustainable contribution actually looks like.

Your Dolphin & Marine Conservation Placement:

At the heart of your Academy experience is the Boresha Maisha Dolphin Conservation Project — our own conservation initiative based in Zanzibar.

The project focuses on the relationship between dolphins, marine tourism, conservation and the coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on the ocean.

Following orientation and appropriate field training, you'll support supervised conservation activities in and around Kizimkazi and the wider Menai Bay environment.

Depending on conditions and current project priorities, this can include dolphin observations, monitoring dolphin behaviour and group composition, recording boat activity and tourism encounters, marine-litter monitoring, responsible-tourism initiatives, ocean education and community engagement.

Rather than simply taking volunteers out to see dolphins, the project explores a much bigger question: how can Zanzibar continue benefiting from dolphin tourism while protecting the animals and marine environment that make that tourism possible?

Become Part of the Project, Rather Than Passing Through It:

One of the biggest advantages of the Academy is consistency.

You're not spending a few days observing dolphins before moving on.

During your first weeks, your priority is to learn. You'll understand monitoring methods, marine conservation challenges, responsible dolphin tourism and the perspectives of local people whose lives and livelihoods are connected to the ocean.

As the weeks progress, you'll become increasingly involved in field observations, conservation activities, monitoring information, community engagement and ocean education.

Participants joining the 12-week Academy naturally have even more time to develop their understanding and contribute to longer-term project activities.

That consistency allows you to move beyond surface-level wildlife volunteering and become a genuinely useful participant in an ongoing conservation initiative.

Global Citizenship in the Real World:

Your placement is only one part of what you're learning.

Throughout the Academy, you'll participate in practical Global Citizenship sessions exploring some of the bigger questions surrounding international volunteering, conservation and development.

You'll explore ethical volunteering, sustainability, capacity building, cultural perspectives, responsible international engagement and how conservation can work alongside the needs of local communities.

These aren't traditional classroom lectures. Sessions are interactive and closely connected to what you're actually experiencing in Zanzibar.

That's where the real learning happens: learning something, experiencing it, questioning it and taking that new understanding back into the real world.

Work Towards a Meaningful Legacy Project:

As your understanding of the project grows, you'll begin working collaboratively towards one of the most important components of the Academy: your Legacy Project.

Rather than arriving with assumptions about what Zanzibar's dolphins, communities or marine environment need, you'll spend time understanding current conservation priorities and speaking with the people involved.

Your Legacy Project could contribute to conservation monitoring, responsible-tourism education, marine-litter initiatives, community awareness, school-based ocean education, Ocean & Environment Clubs or another priority identified through the project.

You'll have time to develop your idea, receive feedback, adapt it and create a proper handover.

The purpose isn't to produce something that simply looks impressive.

It's to contribute something realistic, locally relevant, sustainable and genuinely useful after your cohort leaves.

Personal Growth Is Part of the Journey:

The Academy isn't only about what you can contribute.

It's also about what happens to you when you move to a tropical island off the coast of East Africa and build a life somewhere completely different from home.

Weekly personal growth, self-awareness and reflection sessions give you space to process that journey.

Through workshops, group discussions and your Global Impact Journal, you'll explore confidence, independence, identity, values, resilience, communication, leadership, relationships, cultural adjustment and future direction.

You won't simply finish the program having experienced a lot.

You'll have been encouraged to think about what those experiences actually taught you.

    Learn From Zanzibar:

Living in Zanzibar gives you an opportunity to experience the island far beyond the perspective of a typical holiday.

You'll learn practical Swahili, experience local food and traditions, participate in cultural workshops and learn from Tanzanian community partners and guest speakers.

Some of the most important cultural learning will happen naturally — when you begin using Swahili words, know your way around Paje, understand the local context more deeply and develop relationships with the people around you.

Over time, Zanzibar starts feeling less like somewhere you're visiting and more like somewhere you're actually living.

Experience Island Life — And Mainland Tanzania:

And while the Academy has genuine educational and conservation foundations, we haven't forgotten one important thing:

You're spending your gap year in Zanzibar.

Your Academy home base places you on Zanzibar's beautiful east coast, with the Indian Ocean, beaches and island life becoming part of everyday life.

Across your program, Adventure Days may include Stone Town, snorkelling and ocean adventures, Jozani, beaches, local food, cultural experiences and island exploration.

Your Academy also includes a major journey to mainland Tanzania, combining overland travel with mountains, northern Tanzania and an unforgettable safari experience.

You won't have to choose between doing something meaningful and having the adventure you dreamed about when you decided to take a gap year.

The two are intentionally built together.

    Live the Experience Together:

A huge part of the Academy is the people you'll share it with.

Academy participants join on set intake dates, meaning you'll arrive and progress through the experience alongside your cohort.

You'll live together at our Academy home base in Paje, Zanzibar, close to the beach, while participants complete different internship pathways across conservation, community development and health.

You'll come together throughout the week for workshops, cultural activities, adventures and social events, with shared meals, beach afternoons, games, movie nights, social nights and plenty of spontaneous plans.

And you'll still have independence, with downtime built into the program to explore Zanzibar, relax or organise your own adventures.

Finish With Experience You Can Carry Forward:

Alongside everything you're experiencing in Zanzibar, you'll complete the academic components of your Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship.

You'll also develop practical skills in conservation monitoring, environmental education, community engagement, cross-cultural communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, critical thinking and responsible international practice.

For participants considering future study or careers in marine biology, wildlife conservation, environmental science, ecology, sustainable tourism, international development, environmental education or related fields, the internship provides particularly relevant practical exposure.

But you don't need to arrive as a marine scientist.

You can arrive as someone who wants to learn, contribute and understand the ocean from a completely different perspective.

It's not just a volunteer placement. It's not just a course. And it's definitely not just a holiday.

It's a travel, volunteering and learning experience all in one — giving you the adventure of a gap year, the depth of living abroad, the purpose of meaningful conservation and the future value of an accredited Global Citizenship qualification.

    Typical day

    A Typical Day

Life at Boresha Global Academy follows a consistent weekly rhythm, combining your Dolphin & Marine Conservation internship with Global Citizenship learning, culture, personal development, social life and adventure.

    Mornings | Your Conservation Placement

Weekdays begin with breakfast at your Academy home before heading out for the day's conservation activities.

Unlike a traditional placement, no two days necessarily look the same. Your week is shaped by ocean conditions, conservation priorities and community activities.

Around 2–3 days each week are dedicated to fieldwork and marine activities. You may head onto the water around Kizimkazi and Menai Bay to support supervised dolphin monitoring — recording sightings, group composition, behaviour, calves or juveniles, boat numbers and tourism activity — alongside opportunities to learn about the wider marine environment, corals and ocean ecosystems.

Another 1–2 days each week focus on community outreach and conservation activities. This may include marine-litter monitoring, beach and community clean-ups alongside schools and community partners, responsible-tourism initiatives, ocean education and engagement with local communities.

Initially, you'll focus on training, monitoring methods and understanding Zanzibar's dolphins, marine environment, tourism industry and coastal communities. As your knowledge grows, you'll become increasingly involved across the project.

Your experience will also shape your Legacy Project, developed around a genuine conservation, education or community priority.

    Tuesday | Global Citizenship

After project activities, Tuesday afternoons focus on Global Citizenship and ethical international engagement.

Through workshops, discussions and case studies, you'll explore ethical volunteering, sustainability, cultural perspectives, capacity building, responsible tourism and community-led development.

These sessions connect directly with your conservation work, helping you understand how wildlife, tourism, livelihoods, communities and environmental protection intersect.

    Wednesday | Culture & Connection

    Wednesday afternoons are more experiential.

Depending on the week, you might have a Swahili lesson, Zanzibari cooking experience, cultural workshop, traditional art, music or dance activity, guest speaker or another opportunity to learn about island life beyond tourism.

Thursday | Personal Growth + Social Night

Thursday turns the focus towards personal development.

Your Personal Growth and Global Impact Journal sessions explore confidence, identity, independence, resilience, leadership, communication and cultural adjustment while giving you space to reflect on your experience.

Thursday evening brings everyone together for a cohort debrief and our regular social night — sometimes at home, sometimes out together in Paje.

Friday | Conservation + Free Afternoon

Friday generally includes another morning of conservation activities. Depending on project needs, you could be on the water, supporting a beach clean, working with monitoring information or participating in environmental education or community engagement.

Your afternoon is free. Head to the beach, grab lunch, relax by the pool, explore Paje or simply enjoy some downtime.

    Saturday | Adventure Day

Saturday is usually Adventure Day, when Zanzibar itself becomes part of your education.

Experiences may include Stone Town, beaches, snorkelling and ocean adventures, Jozani, local food, cultural experiences and island exploration.

Some weeks become much bigger adventures.

During the 6-week Academy, you'll travel by ferry to mainland Tanzania before journeying through the Usambara Mountains to Arusha, followed by safari through Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

The 12-week Academy takes the adventure further with an extended overland journey through mainland Tanzania.

    Sunday | Reset

Sunday is yours. Sleep in, head to the beach, explore Zanzibar, go for brunch, spend time with friends, call home or simply relax.

    More Than a Weekly Schedule

Although the Academy rhythm stays familiar, your conservation work changes with the ocean, project and community around you.

By the end of your Academy, you'll understand more about dolphin monitoring, marine ecosystems, responsible tourism and the perspectives of communities whose livelihoods are connected to the sea.

You'll begin seeing Zanzibar's ocean differently — not simply as somewhere beautiful to swim or see dolphins, but as an ecosystem supporting wildlife, tourism, fishing and coastal communities.

And between all of that there'll be beach days, safari, island adventures, road trips, dinners, social nights, cultural experiences and spontaneous adventures with your Academy cohort.

That's what the experience is about: living in Zanzibar long enough to understand the ocean beyond the tourist experience, contribute meaningfully and have an incredible adventure along the way.

Travel Is Built Into the Experience

One thing that makes Boresha Global Academy different from a traditional internship is that travel isn't something you organise around your program — it's built into it.

Your Academy includes island adventures, cultural experiences and major travel across Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. We want you to leave feeling like you've genuinely experienced the country, not simply travelled between your accommodation and placement.

    Saturday Adventure Days:

Most Saturdays are Adventure Days with your Academy cohort. Experiences may include Stone Town, Jozani Forest, snorkelling and ocean adventures, tropical beaches, local communities, Swahili food and culture, and island road trips.

Exact activities vary with season and local conditions, but regular Adventure Days are included.

6-Week Academy | Zanzibar to Safari

Your six-week Academy includes a major mainland adventure.

Travel by ferry from Zanzibar to mainland Tanzania, journey through the beautiful Usambara Mountains, and continue towards Arusha and northern Tanzania.

Your adventure culminates with safari through Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, before returning to Zanzibar for the final stage of your Academy.

It's two completely different sides of Tanzania in one experience: Indian Ocean island life, mountains, road trips and world-famous safari country.

12-Week Academy | The Great Tanzania Overland Adventure:

The 12-Week Academy takes the adventure even further.

Set off from Zanzibar to the Swahili Coast, through the Usambara Mountains and Arusha, before continuing into Tanzania's legendary safari country.

Experience Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, then travel west towards Mwanza and Lake Victoria.

From tropical Zanzibar to mountains, safari country and Lake Victoria, you'll experience an extraordinary cross-section of Tanzania.

Culture, Social Life & Free Time:

During the week, activities may include Swahili, Zanzibari cooking, local art, music, cultural workshops and guest speakers.

Back at the Academy, expect shared meals, beach afternoons, games, movie nights, Thursday social nights and spontaneous plans with your cohort.

Sundays are generally yours. Sleep in, head to the beach, explore Paje, relax by the pool or plan your own adventure.

Your scheduled Adventure Days, overland journeys and Academy cultural experiences are included in your program fee. Independent activities during free time are at your own expense.

The idea is simple: come to Zanzibar for your internship, learning and qualification — and have an incredible adventure across Tanzania while you're here.

For the duration of your program, our Zanzibar Academy home becomes your base in Paje — a tropical, social and welcoming place where you'll live alongside your Academy cohort and meet travellers from around the world.

This isn't basic student accommodation. Academy participants stay in comfortable twin or double rooms with their own private bathroom, quality beds, linen, towels, storage and modern amenities. You'll also have Wi-Fi, regular housekeeping and 24/7 private security, giving you a comfortable and secure place to settle into island life.

    More Than Somewhere to Sleep
At the heart of the property is a large swimming pool surrounded by tropical palms, alongside an island restaurant, poolside bar and social spaces where you can eat, study, hang out or relax after placement.

Grab a hammock under the palms, cool off in the pool, catch up on Academy work or settle in for dinner with everyone.

Meals are served at home too, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included Monday–Saturday and breakfast and dinner on Sundays.

The Social Side of Island Life

Expect pool afternoons, shared dinners, games and movie nights, drinks, themed events, Thursday social nights and plenty of spontaneous plans with your cohort and other international travellers.

Live in the Heart of Paje

The property sits on the main road through Paje, with cafés, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, local market stalls and the surrounding community all within easy walking distance.

And just 300 metres from home is Paje's famous white-sand beach and the Indian Ocean, lined with beach bars, restaurants, cafés and nightlife.

It means you don't need to wait for an organised Adventure Day to enjoy Zanzibar. Finish placement and head to the beach, explore Paje, grab dinner with friends or spend the afternoon beside the pool.

    Your Home Between Adventures

Between placement, Academy workshops, beach days, island adventures and your journey across mainland Tanzania, you'll always have somewhere familiar to return to.

Over six or twelve weeks, you'll get to know the team, discover your favourite local spots, develop your own routines and genuinely settle into life in Paje.

It's not just where you stay during the Academy. It's your home in Zanzibar — pool, palms, beach and all — and a huge part of the experience itself.

    Food & Beverages

Your program includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, plus breakfast and dinner on Sundays. Meals are served at your Academy home base or provided as part of the itinerary when you're away on scheduled trips and experiences.

    🍳 Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast before heading to your placement. Breakfast varies but may include eggs, toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereals, tea, coffee and other breakfast options.

    🥗 Lunch

Lunch is included Monday–Saturday. Depending on the day's schedule, you'll either eat at your home base or arrangements will be made around Academy activities, placements and excursions.

Sunday lunch is left open, giving you the chance to head out for brunch or lunch with friends and explore some of Paje's cafés and restaurants.

    🍛 Dinner

Dinner brings everyone back together and is one of the most social parts of life at the Academy.

Meals include a mixture of Tanzanian, international and familiar home-style dishes, giving you the opportunity to experience local food while still having plenty of variety throughout a longer stay.

You might find dishes such as rice, curries, grilled meats, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, chapati, beans and other Tanzanian favourites on the menu, with meals changing regularly.

🌍 Food Is Part of the Experience

Living in Tanzania also means trying what people actually eat here.

Alongside your everyday meals, the Academy includes food and cultural experiences throughout the program. You may learn to prepare local dishes during a cooking session, try local food while exploring Zanzibar, experience coffee from farm to cup in the Kilimanjaro region, or discover something completely new while travelling with your cohort.

We encourage you to be adventurous — food is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience another culture.

    🥤 Drinks & Dietary Requirements

Drinking water is available at your Academy home base, while tea and coffee are available.

Specific dietary needs before arrival so our team can confirm what can be accommodated.

And because you'll be living in Paje rather than staying inside an isolated campus, you're also free to explore. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, local eateries and nightlife around the city for the days when you feel like heading somewhere different with friends.
