    About the program

Join RAREC’s Education and Community Development Internship for 1–3 months and gain experience planning, teaching and developing educational activities in the Peruvian Amazon. This placement is designed for students in education-related fields, people with previous teaching experience and educators interested in conservation or education in remote settings.

    The project

Education is part of RAREC’s mission to protect Amazonian wildlife and support coexistence between people and the rainforest. Our community program helps children and teenagers build English and computer skills, explore scientific questions and learn about their environment through practical projects.

    Your role

Interns share responsibility for planning and delivering classes while developing new learning material. Compared with our shorter volunteer placements, which primarily support existing lessons, internships involve a longer commitment and greater responsibility for lesson preparation, teaching and module development.

Working with our Education Coordinator, you will:

    • Plan and deliver lessons suited to different ages, abilities and language backgrounds.

    • Support individual students, small groups and classroom management.

    • Develop approximately one complete learning module per month.

    • Research a locally relevant issue, define learning objectives and prepare teaching materials.

    • Pilot activities with students, gather feedback and revise your module.

    • Keep teaching resources organized and prepare a short handover at the end of your placement.

Module development is a guided process, with input from RAREC’s biology and animal-care teams and, where appropriate, community members. It offers experience taking an educational idea from initial research through classroom delivery and evaluation.

    What you can expect

You’ll begin by observing or assisting with classes before gradually assuming greater responsibility. Our Education Coordinator will provide training, review materials before use and offer regular feedback on lesson preparation, classroom management and teaching across language barriers.

Your projects will reflect your interests, experience and the program’s needs. Alongside teaching, you’ll have opportunities to practice Spanish, connect with local communities and learn about Amazonian conservation.

Your internship concludes with a review of your teaching development and completed modules, as well as an opportunity to share feedback on your training and placement.

    Typical day

Your day begins with breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by activities based on the education program’s schedule.

On weekdays, mornings combine lesson preparation, module development and, as our school English classes begin, visits to local schools. You may spend this time researching a topic, preparing activities or reviewing a lesson with the Education Coordinator.

During afternoon community classes, you’ll help teach English and computer skills to children and teenagers. As you gain confidence, you’ll take greater responsibility for delivering lessons and adapting activities to students’ needs.

On Saturdays and Sundays, students join us at RAREC for English, science and conservation activities. These sessions combine classroom learning with practical projects and outdoor exploration, and may provide opportunities to pilot your learning module.

After classes, you’ll help organize materials and join a short debrief with the education team. You’ll use these discussions and student feedback to refine your lessons and guide the next steps in your project.

Your day typically ends at 5:30 p.m.

Your schedule will include time for both teaching and module development, with responsibilities adapted to your experience and stage of placement.
