Through this volunteering program, you can help young Kenyan mothers fight systematic and cultural barriers that prevent them from being successful This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Groups
In Kenya, just as in many parts of the world, women suffer through a lot of gender based discrimination on every aspect of their life: not being able to access to the same opportunities, not being able to obtain land or a passport without their partners' permission, not being allowed to go to school, etc. These cultural, economic, social, and structural barriers actively oppress women and prevent them from achieving success.
Through this volunteering project and your support, we strive to empower young mothers, by creating safe spaces for women in communities of social exclusion and limited resources, where they can feel comfortable, express themselves, make plans for the future, and gain confidence and self esteem. This project involves the entire community of Soweto, where you will be working at, because only that way will improving the environment these women live in be possible.
As a volunteer, some of the tasks you may find yourself doing are:
  • giving workshops about topics like domestic violence, drug abuse, diseases, and other current issues
  • supporting local sewing and embroidery workshops
  • giving classes in topics like English, Math, or Computer use
  • creating didactic and educational activities
  • among many other tasks that may arise depending of the specific needs of the center at the time of your arrival.
Your main goal as a volunteer will be empowering these women, and help them increase their self-esteem and confidence.

Typical day

The Young Mothers' Empowerment Center is found in the area of Kahawa Soweto, at a 10 minutes walk from the places where volunteers stay at. Volunteers work on weekdays (Monday through Friday) from 8:00 to 16:00. Weekdays are free for volunteers to go discover everything Kenya has to offer them.
A typical day for volunteers looks like they waking up at 7:00 and having breakfast with their guest family, going to the project at 8:00 where they shall develop their tasks until 13:00, when they will have a lunch break that lasts up to 14:00, after which
they shall return to the project and work until 16:00

Free-time activities

One of the ways to get to know a country is to make a trip, but not just a trip, a different and unique trip, where you can know, live and feel the true essence of that country and its people. You can do this through volunteering in Kenya: visiting and getting to know the very rich culture of the Maasai tribe, join local Safaris, or enjoy some of the bustling markets and delicious cuisine Nairobi has to offer.
