Highlights

Empower Kenyan women and help them access better opportunities in life
Become more passionate about social issues and gain memories that will last forever
Get to know and understand Kenyan culture by staying with a host family and being all the time around locals
Be exposed to a different reality than your own in a meaningful journey.
Visit and get to know all the beautiful things Kenya has to offer
Through this volunteering program, you can help young Kenyan mothers fight systematic and cultural barriers that prevent them from being successful. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Families
Groups
50+
In Kenya, as in many parts of the world, women suffer a lot of gender discrimination in all aspects of their lives: they cannot access equal opportunities, cannot get land or a passport without their partners. They can't get permission, can't go to school, etc. These cultural, economic, social and structural barriers actively oppress women and prevent them from achieving success.
Through this volunteer project and your support, we strive to empower young mothers by creating safe spaces for women in communities of social exclusion and limited resources, where they can feel comfortable, express themselves, plan for the future and gain confidence and self-esteem. This project involves the entire community of Soweto, where you will be working, because only in this way will it be possible to improve the environment in which these women live.

As a volunteer, some of the tasks you can perform are:

  • Giving workshops on topics such as domestic violence, drug abuse, disease and other topical issues
  • Supporting local sewing and embroidery workshops
  • Giving classes in subjects such as English, mathematics or computer use
  • Creating didactic and educational activities
  • Among many other tasks that may arise depending on the specific needs of the center at the time of your arrival.

Your main objective as a volunteer will be to empower these women and help them increase their self-esteem and confidence.

Typical day

The Young Mothers' Empowerment Centre is located in the Kahawa Soweto area, a 10-minute walk from where the volunteers stay. Volunteers work Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 am mainly, although many stay until 4:00 pm. Weekdays are free for volunteers to discover all that Kenya has to offer.

A typical day for volunteers looks like they wake up at 7:00 and have breakfast with their guest family, going to the project at 9:00 where they will carry out their tasks until 12:00 -13:00, when they will have a lunch break that will last. until 14:00 hours, after which they will return to the project and work until 16:00 hours.

Free-time activities

One of the ways to get to know a country is to make a trip, but not just a trip, a different and unique trip, where you can know, live and feel the true essence of that country and its people. You can do this through volunteering in Kenya: visiting and getting to know the very rich culture of the Maasai tribe, join local Safaris, or enjoy some of the bustling markets and delicious cuisine Nairobi has to offer.
