    About the program

    Why This Project Matters

Education can open doors that were previously out of reach. For many women in Sri Lanka, especially those from disadvantaged families or who married young, access to education and professional opportunities has been very limited. This project creates a safe and encouraging space where women and young mothers can build new skills, grow in confidence and develop new perspectives for their future.

In 2025, 111 women and young mothers took part in this project. They strengthened their English and IT skills, while many also became more confident in expressing themselves and participating in everyday social life. Volunteers are a very important part of creating this supportive learning environment.

Your Project: Women Empowerment in Sri Lanka

As a volunteer, you'll support women and young mothers through English lessons and practical learning activities. The aim isn't to just teach vocabulary, but to give participants useful skills they can apply in everyday life and use to broaden their social and professional opportunities.

Teaching English: You'll help participants improve their English through practical, everyday topics. Depending on their level, lessons will include basic phrases, vocabulary,  quizzes, grammar, conversation, presentations and interactive exercises. Creative ideas are always welcome, especially when they make learning more engaging and accessible.

Building Confidence: Your role goes beyond the classroom. Through group activities, presentations, conversations and supportive feedback, you help the women practise expressing themselves and using their new skills with greater confidence.

IT Skills: The project also includes opportunities to strengthen basic IT skills. You will support participants with practical computer-based studying and help them become more confident using digital tools.

A typical week can include: introducing everyday English phrases on Monday, starting the day with a yoga session on Tuesday, reviewing new vocabulary through a quiz on Wednesday, preparing and presenting short topics on Thursday and finishing the week with a shared activity before heading into the weekend. Tasks and activities vary according to the current program and season, so not every activity can be guaranteed.

Location: Your project takes place in and around Galle on Sri Lanka's south coast. Daily transfers between your accommodation - the wayers Home - and your placement are organised by our local team and included in your program.

Good to know: This project requires very good English skills and previous teaching experience, as you'll be working with women who benefit from well-prepared and structured lessons. Sri Lanka also observes school and kindergarten holidays, although this project follows its own program schedule. During periods when your placement is unavailable, alternative projects may be possible. Please contact us and we will inform you which alternative projects are available during these periods. This project can also be recognised as a social internship.

    Typical day

You'll volunteer four days a week, with one additional day that's dedicated to planning the week's lessons. Your project combines teaching with creative activities that help women and young mothers build their English skills and confidence.

Morning: After breakfast at the wayeres Home, our team's transfer takes you and the other volunteers to your project. Your teaching day focuses on practical English that the women can use in everyday life. You will introduce useful phrases and vocabulary, practise conversations, play language games, or prepare presentations together. Your own ideas are always welcome, especially when they make learning more interactive and accessible.

Midday: After the morning session, you'll have time to take a break and recharge. Depending on the day's schedule, you will continue with another learning activity or use the time to prepare materials for upcoming lessons. On your planning day, you'll work on the next week's lessons together with the other volunteers.

Afternoon: Once your project work is finished, the afternoon is yours. Head to the beach, relax at the wayers Home, cool off in the pool, explore Galle, or spend time with the other volunteers. Depending on the weekly program, you can also join activities such as a yoga session.

Evening: Dinner is shared at the wayers Home, where everyone comes back together after their different project days. Afterwards, you can watch the sunset from the rooftop, meet friends for a drink, or simply enjoy a relaxed evening at home.
