    About the program

This Project offers a great opportunity for social work students or volunteers looking to gain professional or volunteer experience in a different cultural setting in the field of social work.

As one of the most stable and economically advanced countries in Africa, Ghana is often regarded as a success story, particularly in West Africa. Regrettably, the country is facing rising levels of economic inequality, which has deeply affected orphans, child laborers, and children living in troubled homes. Your training in social work is needed to assist local staff and provide children with specialized care.

Social work is less common in Ghana than in other African countries. Your knowledge, dedication, and skills will allow you to work with people that desperately need help, while also raising awareness in local communities.

Your daily tasks will vary during your time in Ghana. Some days may see you in contact with children from abusive homes, or children sold as cheap labor. Other  days may see you working on workshop material and presentations.

Our Social Work project is designed to encourage you and the local staff to share your knowledge regarding the best practices and models needed to improve social work at various care facilities.

Interns can expect to get involved with the following activities:

Raise awareness of social issues in local communities.

Share counseling and therapy methods with local staff to improve current practices.

Provide abused children with the care and attention they need.

Assess the conditions and needs of the children and people you work with.

Workshop and presentation preparation, assisting with general tasks such feeding and playing educational games, and assisting your supervisor.

    Aims & Impact

The aim of this project is to help local children who are victims of social circumstances. It is also aimed at providing you with practical work experience.

Social issues such as domestic violence and child abuse are widespread in Ghana. A lack of resources and education means that there isn’t much social support or rehabilitative programmes available for children affected by it. The centres we work with are also under-resourced, so it is very difficult for local staff to give all of the children enough support.

We aim to provide these centres with extra support. In addition, we also work to raise awareness of the social issues in communities. We also aim to provide our interns with practical experience that will help fulfil your university requirements and add relevant work experience to your CV.

Join us in Ghana and gain practical social work experience while helping children who need extra care and support.

Each day will differ depending on where you are based and what the needs of the children are. In general, you will work with your supervisor and local staff to counsel children and give them the support they need. You will also spend time researching social issues in Ghana, coming up with solutions. You’ll also work on assessing the centres where you are placed, identifying their needs and suggesting improvements.

You will have evenings and weekends free to explore Accra, get to know the other volunteers and interns. Enjoy Ghanaian food at local restaurants, visit local sights and attractions, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax at the volunteer house.
