This program is focused in helping children from low income backgrounds, orphans, and children in monasteries access education, which is essential to their development. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Groups
50+

The main objective of this volunteer program is to support children and young people from vulnerable backgrounds, such as those from low-income families or orphans. We work directly with community schools and adult schools, benefiting around six hundred children, ages 5 to 18, along with eighty-one families.

We recommend this volunteer program to teachers, students, teenage volunteers and young adults; anyone who wants to share their knowledge and put it into practice.

  • Most of the teaching projects take place in Kathmandu, although there are other programs in Pokhara, Chitwan and Gorkha.
  • Through these programs, volunteers can also support education in many monasteries in Nepal.

The tasks volunteers can perform depend on whether they attend a school or a monastery.

  • In the former, volunteers can expect to do things like teach math (according to the classroom curriculum), teach English (focusing mainly on verb tenses, grammar, speech and pronunciation), help with the actual English and math labs , help children complete required homework. The monasteries can also help teachers complete the annual curriculum, help students solve problems in scheduled sessions, provide personalized support to students with more specific educational difficulties, raise awareness of issues such as smoking, chewing tobacco, poisoning and the like, provide support to school kitchens in food preparation and service, among other tasks that may arise depending on the specific needs of the school.
  • In the latter, the monasteries, volunteers can perform tasks such as teaching English, geography or arts and crafts, teaching students how to use computer tools, supporting monks in carrying out daily tasks, helping to organize and develop extracurricular activities and outdoor activities, bringing help with documentation and assisting monastery staff in taking care of the place and scheduling daily activities.

Typical day

Volunteers are expected to work on weekdays (Monday to Friday), while weekends are free for volunteers to discover all the beautiful things Nepal has to offer.

Volunteers will start by joining the orientation and induction to the project. This is usually done during the first two days of the volunteer's stay; in these two days, volunteers can expect to meet the other volunteers, visit the chosen project and learn about Nepalese culture and customs.

After orientation and induction, the volunteer's daily schedule could look like this:
  • 7: 45-8: 45 Breakfast
  • 8: 45-9: 00 arriving at the chosen project
  • 9:00 - 12:30 collaborating with the project
  • 12:30 - 14:00 Lunch
  • 14: 00-17: 00 collaborating with the project
  • 17:00 - 19:00 Free time
  • 19:00 Dinner

Free-time activities

The must visit sites in Kathmandu start with Pashupatinath Temple. The Hindus all over the world revere this temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The ambience is very holy and is marked by burning incense sticks and religious hymns. Equally holy and magnificent is the Buddhist Pagoda of Boudhnath. The monastery is the most popular and the biggest in Nepal and attracts scores of devotees every year. Nearby is another Buddhist monument known as Machhendranath. The pagoda has a distinct architecture and is very popular among the followers of Hinyana sect of Buddhism.

Apart from religious structures you have Durbar Square that is very popular among the tourists. The area has many small but beautiful monuments that have Historical importance. Nearby is Narayanhity Palace, the home of Nepal's monarch. Though this place is out of bound for the tourists, one can very well appreciate the beauty from outside. Apart from that Kathmandu offers ample options for eateries and shopping. The place is famous for handicrafts items that can be bought for mementos and gifts. The embroidered clothes are the other must buy items
