Daycare & Nursery Support

Puntos Relevantes

  • Work across several kinds of setting - day care centres, nurseries, after-school programmes and feeding centres - all serving children from Rabat's poorer neighbourhoods.
  • Give the individual attention the staff cannot. These centres run on limited resources, and one adult per twenty children leaves very little room for the child who needs more.
  • Bring a skill the children will remember: dancing, singing, painting, music, sport. Volunteers are explicitly asked to teach whatever they can actually do.

    Sobre el programa

    Where you will be placed

Volunteers are placed across a range of community-based childcare settings in Rabat: day care centres, nurseries, after-school programmes and feeding centres. All of them serve children from underprivileged neighbourhoods, and all of them are working with less than they need.

The consistent gap is attention. Staff are stretched, resources are limited, and the child who needs an extra ten minutes rarely gets them. That is the space a volunteer fills – not as a replacement for the Moroccan staff, but as the extra adult who can sit with one child while the teacher runs the room.

    What the work involves

You will work directly with the children, helping create a supportive environment through structured and creative activities. The focus is on early childhood development, basic education and social interaction – building confidence, improving learning skills and giving children a stable routine they can rely on.

In practice a day includes supervised play, learning activities, help at mealtimes, and the ordinary practical work of looking after small children.

    Bring what you can do

This is stated plainly on the programme and worth taking seriously: an important component is engaging the children in whatever activity or skill you personally possess. Dancing, singing, painting, a musical instrument, a sport, drawing, storytelling – whatever it is, there will be a room full of children who have never been taught it.

Volunteers who arrive with something to offer, and materials to do it with, get far more out of this placement than those who arrive expecting to be assigned tasks.

    What is asked of you

Enthusiasm, patience, and a genuine liking for young children. No qualification is needed. A clean criminal background check is required before arrival.

    Please note the four-week minimum

Volunteer World requires a minimum stay of four weeks on programmes working with children. That is longer than the one-week minimum on our own site, and for the children it is the better arrangement – consistency matters far more to them than a steady turnover of short-stay visitors.

    At the centre

Mornings are the structured part of the day for the youngest children: songs, counting, letters, drawing, and activities aimed at motor skills and social confidence. In after-school settings the rhythm is different, with homework support and play in the later part of the day.

Meal times are a significant part of what these centres provide, particularly at the feeding centres, and everyone helps.

If you have planned an activity – a dance session, a painting afternoon, a music lesson – this is when you run it. Materials are limited, so anything you bring from home is genuinely useful and stays behind when you go.

    Afternoon

Home to your host family for lunch, which in Morocco is the main meal of the day and worth being there for. Some placements run afternoon sessions as well.

    Evenings

Family time, or the medina, or a cafe on the Kasbah walls watching the sun go down over the Atlantic.

    Weekends

Free. Casablanca is an hour by train, and Fes, Chefchaouen, Marrakech and Essaouira are all weekend trips.

    Actividades de tiempo libre

You work weekdays, so evenings and every weekend are yours - and over a four-week minimum stay you will have time to see a good deal of Morocco.

    Rabat itself

The Kasbah of the Udayas, a blue-and-white walled quarter above the river mouth, is the obvious first afternoon, and the cafe on the walls looking out over the Atlantic is where everyone ends up. The Chellah is a Roman city that later became a medieval necropolis, now full of storks. The Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the medina for shopping, round out the city. Rabat is a UNESCO World Heritage site and considerably calmer than Marrakech or Fes, which makes it an easy place to live for a month.

    Weekend trips

Casablanca is an hour by train, with the Hassan II Mosque - one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims - worth the trip alone. Fes has the oldest and most overwhelming medina in the country. Chefchaouen, the blue town in the Rif mountains, is the photograph everyone comes back with. Marrakech is further but very doable on the train, and Essaouira on the Atlantic is the calmer coastal alternative.

    Further afield

With four weeks or more you have time for the Sahara - Merzouga or Zagora - which needs a long weekend and an overnight, but a night in the dunes is the trip most volunteers say they would not have missed. The Atlas Mountains and the Toubkal trekking routes are reachable from Marrakech.

    Day to day

Mint tea, hammams, and learning to haggle properly in the souk. Your host family will teach you more about all three than any guidebook.

    Alojamiento

You live with a Moroccan host family in Rabat, which is the single biggest difference between this placement and one where you share a volunteer house with other foreigners. You eat with the family, you are drawn into their routine, and your Arabic or French improves whether you intend it to or not.

Rooms are simple and clean. Families hosting our volunteers have done so for years and are used to guests who arrive with no Arabic and no idea how to eat a tagine properly.

Some volunteers find the first few days an adjustment – Moroccan family life is more communal than many people are used to, and privacy works differently. Over a four-week minimum stay, almost everyone ends up describing it as their favourite part of the programme.

The local team is in Rabat and available throughout your stay if anything needs sorting out.

    Comida y bebida

Three meals a day are included, eaten with your host family. Moroccan home cooking is genuinely one of the best reasons to come: tagines, couscous on Fridays, harira soup, fresh bread with every meal, olives, and mint tea at all hours.

Lunch is the main meal of the day and the family will usually eat together – try to be there for it rather than working through, since it is where a lot of the conversation happens.

Vegetarians are straightforward to accommodate; Moroccan cooking is full of vegetable and pulse dishes. Note any dietary requirements on your application form so the family can be briefed in advance. Tap water is generally safe in Rabat but most people drink bottled.

Ramadan: if your stay falls during Ramadan, meal timings shift completely and the household eats before dawn and after sunset. It is a remarkable time to be in Morocco, but worth knowing about before you book.

Start dates: weekly, year-round. Minimum stay four weeks on this programme.

Airport: Rabat-Salé (RBA) is closest. Many volunteers fly into Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN) instead, which has far more international routes and is about an hour from Rabat by train – the train runs from the airport terminal itself.

Please note: airport pickup is not included on the Morocco programmes. The team will send you clear directions to your host family before you travel, and can advise on transfers, but budget for getting from the airport yourself. This differs from most of our other destinations.

Background check: required for all adult participants before arrival, as with any placement involving children.

Visa: most nationalities enter Morocco visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days. Visa and visa extension fees are not included if your nationality does require one.

What to bring: art materials, picture books, stickers, simple instruments – anything light that a small child can use. It will be used every day and left behind when you go.

Ramadan: if your dates fall during Ramadan, the rhythm of the day changes significantly and some centres run reduced hours.
