    Sobre el programa

The Introduction to Underwater Filmmaking Program in Bali is a creative, field-based experience designed for participants who want to merge visual storytelling with real marine conservation impact. Set in the rich underwater ecosystems of Amed, this program provides hands-on training in underwater videography while immersing you in active coral restoration, species monitoring, and community-based conservation initiatives. Through guided mentorship, participants develop the technical, creative, and ecological skills needed to capture powerful stories that inspire awareness and drive meaningful change.

Underwater filmmaking plays a crucial role in global conservation: most people will never see the ecosystems that urgently need protection, and visual storytelling bridges that gap. Yet filming underwater requires specialized techniques—managing buoyancy while filming, lighting in low visibility, understanding marine behavior, and designing narratives that accurately represent ecological realities. Without training, even skilled filmmakers struggle to capture usable or ethical footage. This program exists to fill that gap by teaching participants how to build compelling conservation-focused content that supports scientific communication, environmental education, and outreach campaigns.

Participants spend most days diving, filming, and working alongside our conservation team to document coral nurseries, reef restoration sites, biodiversity surveys, and community-led initiatives. You’ll learn shot planning, underwater camera operation, macro and wide-angle techniques, color correction strategies, natural-light filming, and safe practices for shooting around sensitive habitats and wildlife. Beyond raw footage, you will also practice topside filming for interviews and structured production planning to build a cohesive story.

On land, training sessions cover visual storytelling structure, environmental communication, ethical media guidelines, editing workflows, and the technical foundation of underwater cinematography. Participants learn to use industry-standard editing software and follow professional post-production techniques, including color grading, audio design, and creating narrative sequences. You will analyze your footage, receive personalized feedback, and refine your project from concept to final cut.

Each participant completes a signature project tailored to their interests—such as a short conservation film, a social-media campaign series, a restoration site documentary, or scientific visual assets for our research and outreach. These final pieces support real marine education efforts and serve as portfolio-quality work for future opportunities in filmmaking, media, or conservation.

Participants work closely with our conservation scientists, dive professionals, and experienced underwater filmmakers who provide full supervision and mentorship throughout the program. All required filming gear can be provided upon request, though participants are encouraged to bring personal equipment if preferred. A laptop with editing software is highly recommended for post-production work.

This program is ideal for aspiring filmmakers, media students, content creators, conservation communicators, divers eager to develop a new skillset, or anyone passionate about telling the stories of our ocean. With flexible durations from 3 to 6 weeks, participants gain the time and guidance needed to build strong fundamentals, create impactful underwater narratives, and contribute to conservation efforts through the power of visual storytelling. By joining, you become part of a new wave of creators using film to protect our reefs and inspire global change.

    Día típico

Participants spend most days in the water capturing real conservation work—filming coral restoration sites, documenting reef life, and practicing underwater camera skills in dynamic marine environments. Each day blends practical diving and filming experience with creative development, editing sessions, and storytelling workshops to support your personal project.

From Monday to Thursday, your day begins at 8:00 AM at the dive shop, where you’ll prepare for two morning diveswith a surface interval in between. These dives are intentional and technique-focused: you’ll practice buoyancy control while filming, refine wide-angle and macro shooting, capture restoration activities, and document key species and reef features. After returning from your dives, you’ll take a one-hour lunch break at the dive shop.

Afternoons are dedicated to growing both your technical and creative abilities. You’ll review your footage, participate in storytelling and filming workshops, learn efficient underwater workflows, and receive feedback to strengthen your narrative and camera skills. This is also when you work on your personal project—whether it’s a short conservation film, a social media series, or a documentary-style piece that highlights the ecosystem. Through structured guidance, each participant develops a meaningful final product to take forward.

Fridays operate as a half-day, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. During this time, you might focus on topside filming, improve your editing workflow, practice interview techniques, or continue refining your project. At noon, you’re free for the weekend—whether that means exploring Bali, diving recreationally, or resting. Participants who need to advance their diving certifications may use weekends to complete required PADI courses to strengthen their in-water skills.

This schedule creates a balanced rhythm of diving, filming, learning, and creative development—ensuring you gain the full experience of what it means to be an underwater storyteller while enjoying everything Bali has to offer.

    Actividades de tiempo libre

Your weekends and off-hours are yours to enjoy, but participants in the Marine Videography Program often choose to spend part of their free time improving their diving skills or practicing their underwater filming techniques. Because capturing high-quality footage underwater requires strong buoyancy, stability, and comfort in the water, many participants take advantage of optional PADI courses on weekends or join guided practice dives to refine their camera control and in-water workflow. Our team is always available to help you choose the training path that best supports your filmmaking goals.

Outside of any extra diving or filming practice you want to pursue, you’re welcome to explore Bali at your own pace. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, relaxing on black-sand beaches, exploring temples, browsing local markets, or enjoying great food in nearby towns, we’re happy to offer recommendations and arrange trusted taxi transport so your adventures are safe and seamless.

Amed is an ideal place to unwind after training days. You can snorkel right off the beach, enjoy shore dives at iconic sites like the Japanese Wreck or Jemeluk Wall, visit cozy oceanfront cafés, or relax with a spa day and massage. Many participants enjoy watching sunset from the cliffs, capturing additional topside footage, or simply resting and recharging after days spent diving and filming. You are also free to sign out on the weekends and explore beyond Amed. Whether that is going to the south to surf in Uluwatu or relaxing on the Gili islands, Bali has a lot to see with many activities to offer.

Your free time is flexible—whether you want to stay active, perfect your filming skills, advance your diving abilities, or simply take it slow and enjoy Bali’s natural beauty. Please note that any travel or activities outside of the program are at your own expense. We provide guidance and support, but how you spend your time outside of program hours is entirely up to you.
