     Empowering Ilam's Tea Families ☕

This program is set in the lush, rolling hills of Ilam, Nepal, often called the "Queen of Hills" for its pristine landscapes and world-renowned tea. Volunteers will be immersed in the daily life of a local Nepalese family running a small, micro-level tea operation and a diversified micro-project (e.g., goat farming, homestay, small-scale processing of ginger/cardamom, or handicrafts).

    Why is our program important?

Our program is crucial because it addresses the vulnerability of small-scale farmers and entrepreneurs in Ilam. While tea is the economic backbone of the region, small family producers often lack the capital, technical knowledge, and direct market access to truly thrive. This leaves them exposed to fluctuating market prices and middlemen. By integrating volunteer expertise into their operations and supporting diverse income streams (micro-projects), we help them increase profitability, enhance product quality, and build economic resilience for a sustainable future.

Which social issues do you face?

The communities in Ilam, particularly smallholder tea farmers, face several interconnected issues:

    • Economic Vulnerability: Dependence on a single cash crop (tea) makes families susceptible to market price fluctuations and crop failures due to climate change. Small farmers often receive low prices for their green leaves from larger factories.

    • Lack of Diversification and Value Addition: Many families lack the technical skills (e.g., branding, advanced processing, digital marketing) to turn their raw agricultural products into higher-value micro-enterprises.

    • Infrastructure and Resource Scarcity: Access to financial services, modern farming technology, and consistent safe water supply can be challenging in rural areas, heavily impacting the women who bear the burden of collecting water and managing the household.

    • Occupational Health and Safety: Workers in the tea gardens, especially women, often face risks like injuries, exposure to chemicals (if not organic), and back/joint strain from carrying heavy baskets without proper training or gear.

With whom will the volunteers be working?

Volunteers will be working primarily with the Host Family and their extended community network. This includes:

    • The Family Unit: Working side-by-side with the heads of the household (often mother and father), their children, and sometimes grandparents, in a complete cultural immersion setting.

    • Local Farmers/Workers: Collaborating with neighbors and small cooperative members during peak harvest or community training sessions.

    • Micro-Project Participants: Directly engaging with the individuals responsible for the specific micro-enterprise (e.g., a group of women developing a hand-knitted wool product or a youth group building a small local nursery).

What do you expect from the volunteers?

We expect volunteers to bring a blend of practical help, professional skills, and cultural sensitivity:

    • Active Participation: Willingness to engage in the hands-on labor of the tea garden (plucking, weeding, farm maintenance) and the micro-project.

    • Skill Sharing: Offer expertise in areas like basic accounting/bookkeeping, online marketing, English language training, organic farming techniques, or basic hygiene/safety.

    • Flexibility and Patience: An open mind to the Nepali pace of life and an understanding that resources (like hot water or internet) may be basic and sometimes unreliable.

    • Cultural Respect: A commitment to living modestly and respectfully within the host family structure and local community traditions.

What can the volunteers expect from you?

Volunteers can expect a deeply rewarding and authentic cultural experience:

    • Authentic Immersion: Full board and lodging within a vetted local host family and three traditional Nepalese meals (often Dal Bhat) daily.

    • Hands-On Learning: An opportunity to learn the entire 'field-to-cup' process of orthodox tea and the local farming techniques for other cash crops.

    • Dedicated Local Support: Access to a local coordinator for 24/7 emergency support, cultural translation, and project guidance.

    • Meaningful Contribution: Direct involvement in a specific, measurable micro-project, ensuring your efforts lead to a clear and tangible outcome for the family.

Do the volunteers have to bring special equipment?

No specialized professional equipment is required, as we encourage a low-resource approach. However, volunteers should bring the following essential items:

    • Work Gear: Durable closed-toe work boots/shoes or gardening clogs, work gloves, and quick-drying, modest clothing suitable for farm labor.

    • Personal Essentials: A rain jacket/poncho (Ilam is quite misty and wet), a headlamp or good flashlight (for power outages), and a personal refillable water bottle (boiled water is provided by the host).

    • Technology (Optional): A laptop or tablet can be highly beneficial for teaching business skills or marketing, but it is not mandatory.

    • First Aid: A personal kit with any specific medications, blister plasters, and stomach remedies.

Your Daily Rhythm: Life in the Ilam Tea Gardens

Your daily routine is designed for authentic immersion, balancing hands-on work with cultural exchange and personal time. The schedule adapts to the natural rhythms of the tea garden and the needs of the micro-project.

The Quiet Morning: Tea, Reflection, and Harvest

Your day begins gently around 7:00 AM as you slowly emerge and join the family for the ritual of freshly brewed, farm-grown Ilam tea. This quiet time is perfect for reading, journaling, or simply watching the mist lift off the rolling hills.

By 8:30 AM, it’s time for the first round of tea plucking on the terraces just below the house. You’ll learn the meticulous ‘two leaves and a bud’ technique directly from the local farmers, working alongside them in the crisp morning air.

    Work, Skill-Sharing, and Sustenance

At 10:00 AM, the work pauses for your first main meal: a hearty serving of Dal Bhat. This traditional Nepali staple is always freshly prepared and enjoyed with the family, fueling you for the rest of the morning.

Around 11:30 AM, you will engage in the heart of your mission: the Micro-Project Session. This block is dedicated to utilizing your skills—whether it’s helping to roll the harvested tea leaves, teaching basic business skills for the family’s micro-enterprise, or assisting with homestay marketing and English practice.

    Downtime and Cultural Exchange

The formal work portion of the day ends around 2:30 PM, followed by a delicious afternoon snack of local delicacies like beaten rice or spicy potato salad.

The long afternoon, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, is yours for free time and cultural immersion. This is when true connections are made: you might find yourself joining the children for a game of chess or Uno, participating in an informal yoga session, learning local cooking techniques, or simply relaxing with a book amidst the tranquil beauty of the garden.

    Family Dinner and Evening Rest

At 7:00 PM, the family gathers for the second and final meal of the day—another serving of Dal Bhat, which will taste distinctly different and equally delicious. Dinner is a time for shared conversation and reflection on the day. Your evening wraps up shortly after with simple activities before retiring, ready for an early start in the Ilam hills.

    Actividades de tiempo libre

The beauty of volunteering in Ilam is that your "free time" seamlessly blends into cultural and nature immersion. Given your location in the hills, the activities focus heavily on the outdoors and local life.

Here are the best ways for volunteers to spend their free time while in the Ilam Tea Gardens:

    1. Nature & Viewpoint Adventures (Perfect for Days Off)

    • Catch the Sunrise at Shree Antu (Antu Danda): This is the single most famous activity in the region. The hilltop offers a spectacular panoramic view of the sunrise spilling over the rolling tea hills and the distant plains of India. It’s worth the early morning effort.

    • Hiking through the Tea Estates: Take leisurely walks through the sprawling, manicured tea gardens. You can follow the local paths, watch the tea pickers at work, and enjoy the "fog and sun" atmosphere that Ilam is known for.

    • Visit Mai Pokhari: Travel to this beautiful, nine-cornered star-shaped lake surrounded by a pristine forest of fir, oak, and rhododendrons. It's a sacred site and an ideal spot for quiet reflection, birdwatching, and nature photography.

    • Trek to Sandakpur (For Longer Stays): For a true adventure (usually requiring an overnight trip), trek to Sandakpur, which sits on the Nepal-India border, for a breathtaking view of the world's highest peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, and Mt. Makalu.

    2. Cultural & Local Immersion (Perfect for Afternoons)

    • Deepen the Language Exchange: Spend your free time actively practicing Nepali with your host family, especially the children, or teach them English through simple games, songs, or drawing.

    • Learn Nepali Cuisine: Get invited into the kitchen to learn the secrets of making the perfect Dal Bhat (which always tastes different in the evening!) or local delicacies like Sel Roti or Achar (pickles).

    • Explore Ilam Bazaar/Fikkal: Take a local bus or jeep ride to the nearest town. Ilam Bazaar is charming, offering a chance to sample local snacks, shop for high-quality tea to take home, and observe the weekly market days (Haat).

    • Visit a Local Factory: If your host family's micro-project doesn't include full processing, you can visit a slightly larger local tea or cheese factory to better understand the industrial aspects of the region's economy.

    3. Wellness & Relaxation (Personal Time)

    • Yoga and Meditation: Utilize the quiet, natural environment of the tea garden for personal yoga or meditation practices. The tranquil atmosphere is naturally conducive to mindfulness.

    • Reading and Writing: With limited digital distractions, Ilam is the perfect place to focus on reading, journaling, or writing letters home. Find a cozy spot on a sunny terrace or near a window overlooking the tea bushes.

    • Simple Games: Engage with your host family over simple games. As you experienced, a game of chess or Uno is a popular and fun way to connect across language barriers.

Recogida en el aeropuerto Tribhuvan International Airport

We understand that arriving at a busy international airport like Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu can be overwhelming. We prioritize your safe and hassle-free transfer from the moment you land.

    The Pickup Process:
Before You Fly: Once your arrival details (flight number, date, and time) are finalized, we will confirm your pickup and provide you with the full name and local contact number of the Nepali staff member who will meet you.

Upon Arrival: After you have successfully completed the visa process (if obtaining a Visa on Arrival) and collected your baggage, you will proceed through the final customs check and exit into the main Arrivals Hall.

The Welcome: Our dedicated Nepali representative will be waiting for you just outside the exit gate, holding a clear sign with your name and the program’s logo.

Transfer: They will immediately escort you to the pre-arranged, safe private vehicle (car or van) and transfer you directly to the Volunteer House. This service is included in your program fee.

    Important Note on TIA:
Baggage Handlers: Please be aware that as you exit the airport, you will be approached by many people offering to carry your bags for a fee. We strongly advise you to decline these services and keep hold of your luggage. Your designated representative will assist you with luggage once they have met you.

Safety: Do not leave the airport premises with anyone who is not your confirmed representative. If you have any trouble finding our staff, please contact the emergency number we provide in your pre-departure package immediately.

We aim to make your first moments in Nepal as smooth and welcoming as possible so you can begin your volunteer experience refreshed and ready to connect with the community.

    Alojamiento

You will stay in a shared room with 1-2 other volunteers of the same gender. Rooms are simple, clean, and equipped with comfortable single beds and a shared shelf or wardrobe space. Bathrooms are shared among volunteers.

    Comida y bebida

Your culinary experience in Ilam will be an authentic, delicious, and sustaining immersion into Nepali home cooking. The cornerstone of the diet is the national staple, Dal Bhat—a generous, replenishing meal of rice (bhat), lentil soup (dal), and seasonal vegetable curries (tarkari), served with fresh pickles (achar). This is your fuel, served twice daily (around 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM), providing the necessary 'Dal Bhat power, 24-hour' energy for your farm work. Mornings begin with simple tea, while the day includes satisfying snacks like local flatbread (roti), boiled eggs, or chiura (beaten rice). The diet is naturally mostly vegetarian, utilizing fresh produce grown in the garden, ensuring it is hygienic and often organic. We happily accommodate declared vegetarian or vegan needs, as the local cuisine is highly adaptable.
