    Journée typique

Working Schedule & Placement Experience – Mental Health & Community Support

Typically, our volunteers and interns work between 4 to 6 hours per day from Monday to Friday in mental health centers, rehabilitation programs, schools, community support projects, or during community outreach activities focused on psychosocial support and wellbeing. Participants who require their placement to be officially recognized as an internship should ensure they meet the requirements of their university, college, or training institution.

Participants may choose to focus on one specific area such as mental health awareness, psychosocial support, counseling assistance, youth empowerment, disability support, or community wellbeing programs. Depending on their interests, qualifications, and placement availability, they may also rotate through different community support activities.

Transportation time from the volunteer accommodation to the placement location may vary depending on the project site. Placements within Arusha town are generally easier to access, while outreach programs in rural communities may require longer travel using local transportation.

After your successful application, the Gilys Children Foundation team will work closely with you to identify the most suitable mental health or community support placement based on your experience, interests, and learning goals.

We encourage all participants to approach the experience with an open mind, compassion, patience, and willingness to learn from the local community. Volunteers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, empathy, respect, and positive teamwork while working with children, youth, families, and individuals facing emotional, social, or psychological challenges.

Participants with previous experience or qualifications in psychology, social work, counseling, education, or community development are encouraged to actively engage and support local teams where appropriate. However, volunteers without professional experience can also contribute meaningfully through community interaction, awareness activities, mentorship, and emotional support programs.

Sharing experiences and supporting one another as volunteers is highly encouraged. The Gilys Children Foundation team remains available as a local support system throughout the placement period. We also conduct regular project visits to maintain strong cooperation with our partner organizations and to ensure that volunteers receive proper guidance, supervision, and support during their stay.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

Start Dates & Details on Arrival

Volunteers and interns can join the Mental Health & Community Support Program throughout the year, and placements are available every month depending on project availability. We recommend applying at least 4 weeks before your preferred arrival date to allow enough time for preparation and placement arrangements.

Participants should plan to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. Airport pickup can be arranged by the Gilys Children Foundation team upon request. Our team members will warmly welcome participants and assist them with transportation to the volunteer accommodation.

During the first days of the program, volunteers will receive an orientation session covering important information about the local culture, safety guidelines, transportation, project expectations, and daily schedules. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet other volunteers, explore the surrounding community, and become familiar with the working environment before starting their placement.

The placement schedule normally begins on Monday. Volunteers arriving earlier or during weekends can still be accommodated, and weekend arrivals are encouraged to help participants rest and adjust before beginning activities.

On the first working day, the Gilys Children Foundation team will accompany volunteers to their placement site, introduce them to local staff and supervisors, and provide guidance about their responsibilities and daily activities.

We encourage all participants to arrive with an open mind, flexibility, and readiness to engage positively with the local community. Our local team remains available throughout the entire stay to provide assistance, guidance, and support whenever needed.
