    À propos du programme

    Tanzania Health Opportunities' Placement

This placement offers an ideal opportunity for physiotherapists or aspiring physiotherapists to shadow and assist qualified and experienced professionals across various rehabilitation departments within hospitals and clinics in Tanzania.

It is vital for addressing critical physiotherapy needs in low-resource countries, where limited access to rehabilitation services, inadequate resources, and a high burden of injuries and disabilities create a major challenge.

Through our program, volunteers play a crucial role in supplementing local healthcare efforts by providing much-needed support in rehabilitation and mobility care, while also gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Physiotherapy is essential to improving quality of life, and making it accessible to all is an important part of strengthening healthcare systems.

Volunteers will primarily work in our partnered hospitals and clinics to meet the demand for more hands in physiotherapy and rehabilitation services, depending on their level of knowledge and experience.

Working on our health projects offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to become familiar with the challenges and health issues of developing countries and low-resource facilities. All our hospitals and clinics are government-approved.

The work environment will be very different from what you are used to at home. You need to be open-minded and able to adapt to the limited rehabilitation options available. The hospital is located in the city of Dar es Salaam, just 20 minutes from the volunteer house.

This project is open to everyone with a background or interest in physiotherapy who wants to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged people in Africa while gaining real-world experience in their field.

We have several departments where physiotherapists and students can contribute and learn. You may combine rotations if staying longer. You will work under the supervision of a physiotherapist or senior clinician who will provide full orientation to familiarize you with the department and your role.

    • Orthopedics & Trauma Rehabilitation

    • Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

    • Pediatric Physiotherapy

    • Maternity & Women’s Health Physiotherapy

    • Outpatient Physiotherapy Clinics

    • Community Outreach Programs (disability & rehabilitation support)

    Volunteer Work

This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable physiotherapy experience in a different cultural and clinical setting. You may assist or shadow staff members, depending on your skill level. The type of work you are allocated will depend on your own abilities and competencies, as patient health and safety are our priority.

Your roles may include some of the following:

    • Assisting patients with mobility and walking exercises

    • Supporting rehabilitation after fractures, strokes, or surgery

    • Teaching and assisting with stretching and strengthening exercises

    • Helping with pediatric developmental exercises

    • Supporting patients in physiotherapy wards and outpatient clinics

    • Observing treatment sessions with local physiotherapists

    • Recording patient progress

    • Educating patients on posture, safe movement, and home-based exercises

    • Helping with community-based rehabilitation during outreach programs

    What to expect

The health facilities will be different from what you are used to in your home country, which will open your mind and perspective about physiotherapy in developing countries.

Our organization also runs healthcare outreach programs, where we visit local communities to provide free services to underserved populations. Physiotherapists play an important role in these programs, assisting with mobility support, disability screening, and patient education on exercises and rehabilitation at home.

This offers a wonderful opportunity for volunteers and students to be acquainted with community health issues and the challenges of delivering physiotherapy in a developing country like Tanzania.

    Journée typique

You will be attached to a hospital or clinic here in Dar es Salaam city, where you will have the opportunity to shadow and assist local physiotherapists in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will observe therapy sessions, learn about rehabilitation approaches in low-resource hospitals, and, depending on your skills and experience, may assist under close supervision.

Your day may involve observing or helping with exercises for patients recovering from stroke, surgery, trauma, or chronic illnesses, and supporting physiotherapists during ward rounds and rehabilitation activities. Some days can be very engaging and fast-paced, while others might be slower with fewer patients. You will need to be open-minded, proactive, resilient, and a good team player in order to get the best out of this experience.

In the morning after breakfast, you will go to the hospital with the other volunteers. You can choose to focus on a specific area of physiotherapy (e.g. orthopedic, pediatric, rehab), or rotate between different units to gain broader experience.

    Typical Schedule:

    • 07:00 – Breakfast is ready

    • 08:00 – Report to placement/hospital

    • 14:00 – Placement ends, but you are welcome to stay longer if you wish!

The rest of the day will be yours to relax, spend time with other volunteers, or enjoy what Dar es Salaam has to offer.

You will attend the hospital Monday to Friday. During weekends, you will be free to explore Tanzania’s rich culture, beaches, and attractions.
