    Volunteer Preparation Guide – Kenya

As you prepare to embark on your volunteer journey in Kenya, we kindly encourage you to review the following essential guidelines to ensure a smooth, safe, and fulfilling experience.

    1. Kenyan Currency, Mobile Communication & Internet Access

Having a mobile phone during your stay is highly recommended, as it allows you to stay connected with family, friends, and the UCESCO team. Local SIM cards are widely available, with Safaricom being the leading network provider. A SIM card typically costs approximately USD 1 and offers affordable call and data packages.

The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). You may exchange currency at major shopping malls or withdraw cash from ATMs across the country. Please note that US Dollars are commonly accepted for entry fees in national parks.

We strongly recommend obtaining a local SIM card to access M-Pesa, Kenya’s widely used and secure mobile payment platform. M-Pesa allows you to conveniently make payments for transport, shopping, and services—even in remote areas—without the need to carry cash. This is especially useful when exact fare is required, as it minimizes the inconvenience of handling change. You can also top up your M-Pesa account through international services such as Wise.

Internet access is readily available through Wi-Fi at most accommodations, workplaces, cafés, and shopping centers. For additional convenience, portable modem devices may also be purchased for personal internet access.

    2. Packing Essentials

    Required Documents & Items:

    • eTA Visa (apply via: https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de/evisa)

    • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity from date of entry)

    • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate

    • Credit/debit card and/or cash

    • Power adapter compatible with Kenyan outlets

    Recommended Items:

    • Personal toiletries

    • Travel pillow

    • Wet wipes and hand sanitizer

    • Comfortable and durable footwear (suitable for outdoor activities)

    • Small day bag or waist/fanny pack

    • Portable power bank

    • Hairdryer (if required)

    • Weather-appropriate clothing (we advise checking the forecast prior to travel)

Laundry services are available at an additional cost.

    3. Your First Day with UCESCO

Upon arrival, a UCESCO representative (Kingsley or another team member) will meet you at the airport. Communication prior to arrival will be coordinated via WhatsApp.

Your official orientation will take place on the first weekday at the UCESCO office. If you arrive over the weekend, optional activities such as a short city tour or a 1–2 day safari can be arranged. However, your first visit to the project site will take place on Monday.

During orientation, the Volunteer Coordinator will introduce you to the organization, its mission, and ongoing programs. You will also have the opportunity to visit selected project sites. The day typically concludes around 2:00 PM.

After orientation, you may visit a nearby shopping mall to purchase a SIM card (passport required) and set up your M-Pesa account.

    4. Exploration Opportunities: Tours & Safaris

Meaningful Tours and Travel Kenya offers volunteers an opportunity to explore the beauty, culture, and diversity of Kenya through affordable and well-organized travel experiences.

Weekends provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy safaris and excursions:

    • Extended Safaris (e.g., Maasai Mara, Samburu): Recommended duration is 2–3 days (Friday to Sunday)

    • Short Safaris (near Mombasa): Can be completed within 1–2 days

From the iconic savannahs of the Maasai Mara to the stunning beaches of the Kenyan coast, these experiences allow you to witness incredible wildlife, explore the Great Rift Valley, and engage with local communities.

With Meaningful Tours and Travel Kenya, you will not only visit Kenya—you will experience its true essence and create lasting memories.

    5. Maximize Your Impact – Become a Volunteer Champion

Your contribution as a volunteer is invaluable. However, you can further amplify your impact by organizing a personal fundraiser to support critical community needs such as:

    • Food and nutrition programs

    • School fees and educational support

    • Ongoing school construction projects

    • Access to healthcare services

While we understand that you may not be able to meet all these needs alone, your network—friends, family, and colleagues—can play a meaningful role in supporting your efforts.

If you require assistance with fundraising materials or promotion, our team will be happy to support you. You can also access resources through our social media platforms or shared Google Drive.

Together, we can create lasting change and make your volunteer experience even more meaningful.

    Journée typique

    Daily Schedule

Volunteer activities are conducted each morning, followed by a range of optional afternoon activities, including sports, traditional Kenyan dance classes, and cooking lessons. Participation in these activities is contingent upon the interest of the volunteers. Most volunteers prefer short tours around the city  (Museums and parks), visiting malls, open-air markets (Maasai market), Live bands and local clubs, nature trekking, and then returning home to relax and prepare for the next day's engagements.

A typical daily schedule may be outlined as follows, with potential minor adjustments:

    • 8:30 a.m. - A nutritious and appetizing breakfast is provided.
    • 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. - Volunteer work as previously detailed.
    • 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Optional afternoon leisure activities as mentioned.
    • 3:30 p.m. - Time to unwind and prepare to return home.
    • 8:00 p.m. - Dinner is served.

    N/B
There can occasionally be delays with luggage. We have observed that some volunteers have experienced significant waits for their bags, sometimes up to three days. To prepare for such situations, we recommend that you pack essential items and a few clothes to change for 2 - 3 days in your carry-on bag. While luggage delays are not common, they can occur, and we want to help you avoid any unnecessary expenses, such as having to purchase clothing while waiting for your luggage.

    Logement

At UCESCO Africa, we believe that where you stay is an important part of your volunteer experience. Our volunteer accommodation is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment where you can relax, connect, and feel at home.

Volunteers stay in a cozy, shared volunteer house located within a friendly and secure community. The house offers a warm, family-like atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow volunteers from around the world.

Rooms are shared (typically 2–4 people per room with your own bed) and are furnished with comfortable beds, clean bedding, and secure storage for your belongings. Separate arrangements can be made for couples, families, or those requesting additional privacy.

You will enjoy freshly prepared, home-cooked meals, offering a mix of local Kenyan cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice.

    The house includes:

    • Clean shared bathrooms with running water
    • A comfortable common lounge area for relaxing and socializing
    • Access to Wi-Fi
    • Laundry services or facilities

Above all, our accommodation is more than just a place to stay — it’s a space where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and your volunteer journey truly comes to life.

    HOW TO GET AROUND.

Favored in Mombasa, bodabodas are quick, versatile, and can navigate through traffic easily. They are perfect for short trips. Helmets are typically provided. Cost: KES 50–300 (approximately $0.40–$2.00), depending on distance and negotiation
    • Tip: Always confirm the fare before starting the ride and wear warm clothing if traveling in the evening.
    • 2. Uber / Bolt (Ride-Hailing Apps)
Dependable and comfortable. Perfect for visitors who are not familiar with the city. GPS tracking and payment options are accessible through the app. Recommended for volunteers, particularly at night or in unfamiliar areas. Cost: KES 500–900 (approximately $4–$6 USD) within city limits. Safer, especially for longer distances or solo travel.

    • 3. Tuktuk (Three-Wheelers)
Tuk-tuks are particularly prevalent in Mombasa. They are slower but cost-effective and can transport 3–4 people at once. Primarily used for short local trips in designated zones. Cost in Mombasa: KES 50–150 ($0.40–$1.10) depending on the area. Slower than boda or Uber but suitable for group errands.

    • 4. Mombasa Ferry
Utilized to travel between Mombasa Island and the mainland (Likoni). The ferry is often packed and may experience delays, particularly during peak hours. Cost for pedestrians: Free but Cost for motorcycles: Approximately KES 50 ($0.40) and Cost for cars/tuktuks: KES 120–200 ($0.90–$1.50). Anticipate waiting times and congestion—plan ahead if you intend to use the ferry.
