Support children in a Jaipur shelter home with homework, life skills and daily care — a four-week minimum placement for committed volunteers.

    Sul programma

Jaipur's shelter homes exist for a specific reason. When police and child-welfare authorities in Rajasthan take a child out of a workshop, a roadside stall or a violent household, that child needs somewhere to go while their case is worked through and a longer-term family placement is found. The shelter is that somewhere. It is not a permanent home and it is not an orphanage — most of these children have living relatives, and the goal is always a family, whether their own or a foster one.

Volunteering Solutions places volunteers in two of them. One is a boys' shelter for children taken out of child labour. The other is a home for girls affected by HIV, who face a particular kind of exclusion in their own communities. You are assigned to one, not rotated between them, and you stay with that group for your whole placement.

What you will actually be doing

The children are at school in the morning, so the placement runs in the afternoon — roughly 1pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday. You arrive as they come back, and the work is what any decent after-school programme looks like: homework support, English practice for children whose schooling has been interrupted, arts and crafts, sport and games, and structured sessions on subjects the care-takers ask you to cover, such as hygiene, friendship and the harm caused by chewing tobacco. If you have skills the organisation can use in its office — writing, proposals, event coordination — it will use them.

You are not a substitute for the care-takers. They are permanent, the children know them, and they run the home. You are an extra pair of hands and an extra adult with time to give, which in a shelter is genuinely scarce.

Why the minimum is four weeks

Because these children have already had a great many adults arrive and leave. A volunteer who stays a week is an event. A volunteer who stays a month becomes someone they can predict and rely on. We hold the four-week floor even though shorter stays would be easier to sell, and every adult volunteer clears a criminal background check before placement is confirmed. If you want a shorter trip in Jaipur, our teaching, slum education and school renovation projects run from one week and are a better fit.

    Who this suits

You need patience more than qualifications. Progress here is slow and often invisible — a child who would not speak to you in week one asking you a question in week three is the shape of a good outcome. Volunteers who arrive expecting gratitude, or expecting to fix something, tend to struggle. Volunteers who arrive willing to show up every afternoon and be steady tend to do well, and tend to be remembered.

You need to be 18 or over, in good health, and comfortable somewhere that runs to Indian time rather than yours. Intermediate English is required. Hindi is not, though the children will happily teach you some.

    Giornata tipica

Saturday — Arrival in Jaipur. You are met at Jaipur International Airport, or at Jaipur Railway Station if you are coming overland from Delhi, and taken to your accommodation.

Sunday — Half-day orientation with the local coordinator: safety, culture, basic Hindi, how to use Uber and auto-rickshaws, what to expect at the shelter, and a walk around the neighbourhood to find the ATM and the market.

Monday — First visit to the placement. You observe, meet the care-takers and the children, and work out with the team where you will be most useful. Nothing is expected of you on day one beyond turning up and paying attention.

Tuesday to Friday — the working pattern:

    • 07:30 — Breakfast at the volunteer house or with your host family
    • Morning — Free. Most volunteers use it to plan sessions, explore the old city, or take a Hindi lesson
    • 12:30 — Lunch, then leave for the placement
    • 13:00–18:00 — At the shelter: homework support, English, arts and crafts, games, and helping the care-takers
    • 19:30 — Dinner back at the accommodation

Weekends — Yours. Jaipur itself takes a couple of days. Beyond it, volunteers head to Pushkar, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra for the Taj Mahal, or back to Delhi.

The pattern repeats from the second week, Monday to Friday. Timings shift around school holidays and festivals, and Rajasthan has plenty of both.

    Attività del tempo libero

Because the placement runs in the afternoon, your mornings are genuinely free — more free time than most volunteer programmes give you, and Jaipur rewards it. The Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the Hawa Mahal are all within easy reach, and the old city markets are best walked early, before the heat builds.

Volunteers commonly use mornings for Hindi lessons, yoga or a slow breakfast in the old city, and weekends to travel. Pushkar is about three hours away, Udaipur and Jodhpur are overnight trips, and Agra puts the Taj Mahal within a weekend. Delhi is around five hours by train.

Evenings are usually spent with the other volunteers at the accommodation. Jaipur has a good cafe and restaurant scene, cinemas showing new Bollywood releases, and cooking classes if you want to take some Rajasthani food home with you.

    Prelievo dall'aeroporto a Jaipur Airport

Arrival transfer is included, and unusually, it works from the railway station as well as the airport.

Most volunteers are met at Jaipur International Airport (JAI) by a member of the local team. But Jaipur has few direct international routes, so plenty of people fly into Delhi and take the train across — around five hours, and a good introduction to the country. If that is your plan, you are met at Jaipur Railway Station instead. Either way, confirm your arrival details with the team in advance so somebody is there.

A drop-off at the end of your placement is arranged too.

    Alloggio

You stay either in the volunteer house or with a host family. The team decides which based on availability and what suits you; tell them if you have a preference when you apply.

The volunteer house sits in a lively residential area in the north of Jaipur, close to banks, ATMs, currency exchange, cafes, restaurants and shops. Rooms are shared, dorm style, with bunk beds. There is WiFi, filtered drinking water, geysers for hot water, air coolers, a washing machine and western toilets.

Host families are local Indian households used to hosting volunteers. Rooms are single or dual occupancy, with a maximum of three volunteers to a room, and you share the common areas, WiFi, fridge, cooler, geyser, washing machine and purified water. If you want the deeper cultural experience and do not mind the compromise on independence, ask for this one.

Private room upgrades are available at extra cost in both. The placement is 20 to 30 minutes away, and the team helps you set up Uber and use the local auto-rickshaws.

    Cibo e Bevande

Three meals a day are included, seven days a week, and all meals are vegetarian — which in Rajasthan is not a limitation so much as the local default.

At the volunteer house: breakfast is self-served and typically bread, jam, butter, porridge, poha, eggs and chai. Lunch and dinner are cooked fresh by cooks who prepare the food at home and deliver it — usually dal, a vegetable dish, rice, roti, yoghurt and often a curry.

With a host family: breakfast is more traditional — poha, paratha, poori-sabji or toast — and lunch and dinner are the same home-cooked vegetarian food the family eats.

Tell the team in advance about allergies or specific dietary needs and they will work around them. Bottled water and anything you buy while out is your own cost.

    Dettagli all'arrivo

Start dates — Weekly and year-round. You can begin any week you like; the arrival day is Saturday.

Getting there — Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is the arrival point. It has few direct international routes, so most volunteers connect through Delhi (DEL) or a Gulf hub. If you fly into Delhi and take the train to Jaipur — a common and pleasant choice, around five hours — you are met at Jaipur Railway Station instead. Tell the team which you are doing when you book.

Transfers — Arrival pickup is included, from either the airport or the railway station. A drop-off at the end of your placement is arranged as well.

Visa — India has no visa on arrival for this purpose. You must apply for an e-Visa in advance, so leave time for it. Visa fees are not included in the programme cost.

Background check — A clean criminal background check is required from every adult volunteer before the placement is confirmed. Start this early; in some countries it takes several weeks.

When to come — Jaipur is very hot from April to June and wet from July to September. October to March is the comfortable window.

Age — 18 and over for this placement, which is higher than our other Jaipur projects.
