    Over het programma

    Who Are We?

Founded and operated by a qualified medical professional, Medi Trip is a distinguished organisation rooted in clinical excellence, medical integrity, and patient-centered care. Our unique strength lies in our ability to leverage knowledge and expertise to meticulously skills match the most appropriate, realistic and impactful settings for our volunteers. When you choose Medi Trip, your choosing a bridge to a placement which is not arbitrary but carefully tailored to align with need, interest and advancement goals.

Professionals: You will attend procedures being expertly executed by local physicians

Students: You will be supervised directly and given set objectives with specific learning outcomes designed to build your knowledge on key skills of emergency surgery and trauma medicine and a certificate on completion.

The Medi Trip Frontline Medicine: Emergency & Trauma Surgery placement offers volunteers & interns a profound and eye-opening journey into the realities of emergency healthcare in a resource-limited setting. Participants will step into a busy hospital environment where every second counts, and the challenges of limited staff and equipment are a daily reality. This experience is not just about observation; it is about gaining an authentic understanding of how local physicians respond to life-and-death situations, often with ingenuity, resilience, and unwavering dedication.

Throughout this placement, volunteers will witness a wide spectrum of cases—ranging from minor injuries to severe, life-threatening traumas. They will have the rare opportunity to observe both straightforward procedures and complex surgeries being expertly executed by local medical professionals who work tirelessly with the resources available. These moments will serve as powerful lessons in adaptability, quick-thinking, and the importance of teamwork when every decision can impact a patient's outcome.

Participants will also be involved in managing patients in outpatient clinics and accident-and-emergency departments, where community members arrive with injuries resulting from everyday life—whether minor cuts or major accidents. For those with an interest in obstetrics, there will be the chance to observe emergency cesarean sections, an experience that underscores the vital role of rapid intervention in saving both mothers and babies in challenging circumstances.

The hospital setting is a hub of activity—where health workers deal with the immediate aftermath of injuries, stabilize critical patients, and navigate a complex web of challenges, including overcrowding, intermittent shortages of supplies, and the need to make swift, informed decisions. Yet, despite these hurdles, the team’s compassion and dedication shine through, demonstrating the true spirit of global health workers committed to saving lives and nurturing wellbeing under difficult conditions.

Supporting these incredible efforts are comprehensive orientations, ensuring volunteers understand the protocols and safety measures necessary for participation. Under the close supervision of passionate, experienced medical staff, volunteers will learn firsthand the importance of precise, skillful care in emergency medicine and trauma response—skills that are valuable wherever in the world they choose to serve.

Beyond the clinical skills and procedural knowledge, this placement is a journey of cultural and personal growth. Volunteers will witness the incredible resourcefulness and resilience of their local counterparts and realize that they are part of a global community committed to health equity. The experience becomes more than just a week or two in a hospital—it is a powerful reminder of why global health is a high-priority agenda worldwide, driven by a shared desire to reduce disparities, alleviate suffering, and improve lives.

This placement is truly a life-changing opportunity—a chance to understand the urgent need for worldwide collaboration in health, and to reflect on one’s role in creating meaningful change. It inspires future healthcare professionals to expand their perspectives, develop critical skills, and deepen their commitment to serving with compassion and humility in the face of adversity. Ultimately, it is a stepping stone into the world of global medicine—an experience that will shape perspectives and ignite a lifelong passion for health equity and service.

    The Challenge

    • Tanzania faces a very high injury burden, especially from road traffic accidents, with an estimated 36.2 deaths per 100,000 people, higher than the global average (WHO, 2018).

    • Injuries are a leading cause of death among children and adults, linked to road crashes, falls, violence, and work-related incidents (Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics, 2016). These are avoidable deaths.

    • Emergency response systems are limited, especially outside urban centers; many hospitals lack dedicated trauma units and advanced diagnostic equipment.

    • Delays in assessment and stabilization are common due to staffing shortages and logistical challenges, resulting in preventable deaths (Mtonga et al., 2017).

    • There is a significant shortage of trained emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, and emergency nurses; most care is provided by general practitioners with limited trauma training.

    • Rural areas lack organized pre-hospital services, leading to delayed treatment and secondary injuries during transport.

    • Ongoing efforts include developing the need for developing EMS/Paramedic services, training programs, trauma registries, and integrating emergency care into national health strategies (Moore et al., 2018).

    • Urgent need for increased investment, infrastructure, and specialized training to improve Tanzania’s emergency and trauma care system.

    The Work
Volunteers and interns participating in the "Frontline Medicine: Emergency & Trauma Surgery" program will be immersed in a dynamic, real-world healthcare environment, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. They will work alongside experienced local physicians and healthcare teams at a busy hospital, where they will observe and participate in a wide range of emergency and trauma cases.

    • Rotation Through Key Departments: Volunteers and interns will rotate between the emergency department, trauma surgery, and intensive care units, gaining a well-rounded experience in frontline medical care.

    • Emergency Department: They will observe and support the management of acute cases such as wound care, fracture stabilization, and initial assessment of injuries. Under supervision, they will support triage and help with basic emergency protocols to stabilize patients quickly.

    • Trauma Surgery: Interns will shadow surgeons during trauma repairs, fracture fixations, and emergency obstetric procedures like cesarean sections. They may assist in pre-operative preparations, during the operation, and post-operative patient monitoring, learning how urgent surgical care is provided in resource-limited settings.

    • Intensive Care Unit: Volunteers will observe and assist in the ongoing care of critically injured or seriously ill patients. This includes supporting vital sign monitoring, airway management, and fluid therapy, helping to deliver complex care adaptations made necessary by resource constraints.

    • Hands-on Skills Development: Throughout each rotation, volunteers will develop practical skills in trauma assessment, emergency response, surgical assistance, and critical patient care, working closely with

Allied areas can include the following:

    • Intensive Care

    • Theatres: Minors & Majors

    • Emergency Obstetrics: C-sections

    • Paediatrics: NICU & Paeds ICU

Overall, the program offers a unique opportunity for volunteers and interns to improve their clinical competencies, contribute meaningfully to underserved communities, and gain insight into the vital work of frontline emergency and trauma medicine in a low-resource setting. It’s a transformative experience that not only enhances medical knowledge but also fosters resilience, cultural awareness, and a global perspective on health.

So what exactly is medical volunteering?

It demands a rare combination of dedication, resilience, and compassion from those willing to serve abroad. Medical volunteering is far more than simple assistance; it immerses volunteers in a demanding, often emotionally and physically challenging environment where they are entrusted with genuine responsibility. You will work directly with patients and within critical healthcare areas, witnessing firsthand the realities of healthcare delivery in underserved settings.

This experience is uniquely profound. Volunteers often confront situations that evoke a wide spectrum of emotions—sadness, shock, sometimes even confusion. Yet, amid these challenges, volunteers frequently find themselves inspired by the extraordinary resilience and courage of the people they serve, as well as the unwavering skill and dedication of their local colleagues. It is a transformative journey; one that leaves a lasting impression, fostering personal growth, cultural understanding, and a renewed appreciation for the universal power of compassionate healthcare.

Participating in medical volunteering with Medi Trip is not merely about aid; it’s about joining in a shared human effort to improve health outcomes in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. It’s a challenging, eye-opening, and deeply rewarding experience designed to stretch your skills, expand your perspectives, and remind you of the profound impact compassionate, skilled healthcare can have on individual lives and entire communities.

    About Arusha

Tanzania belongs to the East African community, neighboured by Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and Mozambique. Arusha is in northern Tanzania; a very unique and vibrant city at the base of Mount Meru, about an hour away from the tallest mountain in Africa Mount Kilimanjaro. The city is surrounded by natural beauty being in close proximity to several national parks including Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Olduvai and Arusha National Parks.

Interestingly, Arusha hosted the international criminal tribunal for Rwanda and sits as the de facto East African Community capital. Despite being in a conservative and religious country, Arusha is regarded as more liberal and very open to foreigners. Perhaps due to it's historical significance in the 1961 Arusha Declaration, which gave independence to modern Tanzania from the British Commonwealth. The city is very much a melting pot, multicultural and populated by people from all different backgrounds. The main language spoken is Swahili and a visitor would do well by learning a few of the many greetings.

    Where will you stay?

You will stay in Siret Hostel, one of the highest-rated and reviewed guesthouses in Arusha. We provide safe, clean and comfortable accommodation, comfortable bedding, excellent breakfast and dinner and housekeeping. This will be a quiet and friendly neighbourhood only 15 minutes from the main hustle and bustle of town. You will have wifi, hot showers, 24 hour gated security, a domestic/cook (who will happily do your laundry for a small fee) and a coordinator who will ensure you settle in quickly and comfortably into your new town. This is a shared home where you will be staying with other volunteers and guests from across the world, so you will never be on your own in your new environment. The house is impeccably clean, well kept, modern and spacious.

    How will you get around?

You have the choice of local taxis (we have contacts of affordable, trusted drivers) who can get you around town or you can use the famous ‘dala dala’ mini buses that most Tanzanians use to travel locally every day. Some people adapt very fast and choose to walk around, it is safe to do so however like with any new environment we strongly advise you to be aware of pickpockets and thieves. Always be safe and ask your coordinator before going anywhere new to you.

    Important VISA & Permit Information

You will be required to pay a for a VISA & Permit for voluntary work assignment. Please enquire for details.

    HOSPITAL CONTRIBUTION
This is a payment all medical volunteers in Tanzania must make towards your host hospital (Ministry of Health, Tanzania) see fees.

    Where do my fees go?

Most of your fees are spent locally. Fees ensure you have above standard accommodation, that you have a personal coordinator picking you up at the airport, orientating you and you have a coordinator day to day and your program is planned and facilitated specifically for you, to match your skills and get you to provide the very best to those that need you.

Do any fees go directly to the projects?

Yes they do. Although we don't necessarily think that making financial contributions solve the complex issues faced by deprived areas, we do know acknowledge how challenging it can be for our partners to host, supervise and very often teach in a second language alongside their regular duties and we honor that. We want our partners to know they are valued and respected for their time as best we can.

Is Africa safe for me to travel alone? Do I need to be with other volunteers?

Regardless of whether you're volunteering on a clinical mission, you're still a tourist. Forward planning is key to protecting yourself from risk as you would anywhere in the world. As a group or a solo traveller from abroad, you will attract attention but, you will also have a great support system in your volunteer coordinators, fellow travellers/volunteers and supervisors. It's important to try and be conscientious of your new surroundings and respect and follow local customs as much as possible and insure yourself from any possible risks.

Africa is a large continent with every country varying greatly in local culture, customs, rules and regulations. Research your destination as much as possible and ask as many questions as possible. We would never place you at risk or in harm's way, however it is important you take ownership of your journey and behave responsibly.
