    Over het programma

Detailed Volunteer Program DescriptionWhy choose this Engineering Internship in Tanzania?
    • Work on real engineering and construction projects rather than sitting in a classroom or completing simulated tasks.

    • Explore a highly niche international internship designed specifically for students and early-career engineers who want practical industry exposure.

    • Build career-relevant experience across civil works, construction, site operations, planning, project coordination and development.

    • Learn alongside local engineering professionals and understand how projects are delivered in a fast-growing East African environment.

    • Strengthen your CV and professional direction while discovering which areas of engineering genuinely interest you.

    • Receive comprehensive pre-arrival support, including preparation guidance, documentation support, accommodation, airport collection and local orientation.

    • Stay flexible with placement duration, project focus and additional professional or community experiences depending on your interests.

    • Ask about longer-stay, group and returning-participant discounts when planning your programme.

    A career-focused engineering experience

This is not a generic volunteering programme.

Our Engineering Internship is one of Medi Trip’s more specialised placements and has been developed for participants who want to gain meaningful exposure to the realities of engineering, construction and project delivery in Tanzania.

The programme is particularly suited to engineering students, recent graduates, gap-year students considering engineering, apprentices and early-career professionals who want to move beyond theory and see how technical projects are actually delivered on the ground.

Depending on your education, experience, interests and the projects taking place during your stay, you may gain exposure to areas including:

    • Civil engineering

    • Construction and site operations

    • Commercial and private developments

    • Project planning and coordination

    • Site measurements and surveying processes

    • Construction materials and methods

    • Quality control

    • Health and safety

    • Technical drawings and project documentation

    • Contractor and site-team coordination

    • Project scheduling

    • Problem-solving within live construction environments

Your exact activities will always depend on your level of study, experience and the stage of the projects available during your internship. Participants are never expected to carry out technical responsibilities beyond their demonstrated competence.

Learn how engineering works in the real world

Engineering looks very different once you leave the lecture theatre.

On site, projects are influenced by budgets, materials, weather, logistics, deadlines, contractors, suppliers, local regulations, clients and unexpected challenges.

This placement gives you the opportunity to see those realities first-hand.

You may observe how engineers interpret plans, organise teams, monitor progress, solve site problems and adapt designs or construction methods to practical conditions.

You will also gain valuable insight into how engineering and construction operate within a Tanzanian context, where rapid urban growth and infrastructure development create a fascinating environment for students interested in civil engineering, construction management and the built environment.

    Develop more than technical skills

International engineering experience can also develop skills that are difficult to learn from textbooks alone.

You will be encouraged to develop:

    • Professional communication

    • Teamwork

    • Adaptability

    • Cultural awareness

    • Confidence in professional environments

    • Independent thinking

    • Problem-solving

    • Observation and analytical skills

    • Project awareness

    • Cross-cultural workplace experience

These are all valuable skills for future employment, graduate programmes, university applications and postgraduate study.

    Explore your future career

A major focus of Medi Trip programmes is vocation and career development.

We want participants to leave Tanzania with a clearer understanding of what they enjoy, what they are good at and what kind of professional environment suits them.

You may already know that you want to become a civil engineer. You may be deciding between engineering disciplines. You may simply want to know whether working on live construction and development projects feels right for you.

This internship gives you the opportunity to test those interests in a real professional setting before making major academic or career decisions.

For students already studying engineering, the experience can also help connect university theory with practical application.

    About Medi Trip

Medi Trip is a specialist international internship and volunteer organisation based in Arusha, Tanzania.

Rather than offering only broad general volunteering programmes, we increasingly focus on vocational, professional and career-focused placements across areas including healthcare, engineering, physiotherapy, psychology, nutrition, law, social work and community development.

Our programmes are designed to give participants meaningful exposure to professional environments while ensuring that involvement remains appropriate to their qualifications and experience.

We work closely with local organisations, professionals and project partners to create placements that offer both international learning and genuine local value.

    Highly niche placements

Engineering placements are still relatively uncommon within international volunteering and internship programmes.

That is exactly why we offer them.

We believe students should be able to explore careers outside the traditional medical, teaching and childcare routes that dominate international volunteering.

This programme is therefore particularly valuable for participants looking for something specialised, practical and career-relevant rather than a generic travel experience.

    Comprehensive support before you travel

Preparing for an international internship can feel overwhelming, particularly if this is your first time travelling independently.

Our team supports you throughout the preparation process.

Before arrival you will receive guidance covering:

    • Programme preparation

    • Required documentation

    • Visa guidance

    • Flights and arrival planning

    • Accommodation

    • Airport collection

    • Travel insurance

    • Health and safety

    • Cultural preparation

    • What to bring

    • Placement expectations

    • Local transport

    • Life in Arusha

Participants can also book pre-arrival video consultations with our team to discuss their placement, preparation and professional goals before travelling.

    Arrival and orientation

On arrival in Tanzania, you will be collected from Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and taken to your accommodation.

Your local orientation introduces you to Arusha, local transport, safety, communication, cultural expectations and practical day-to-day life.

You will then be introduced to your engineering placement and local team.

Our coordinators remain available throughout your stay to help with practical questions and placement support.

    Accommodation and life in Arusha

Participants stay in one of our shared intern houses in Arusha, allowing you to live alongside other international students, interns and volunteers.

Private-room upgrades may also be available.

Living with other participants creates a social environment outside working hours while still allowing you to experience everyday life in Tanzania.

Weekends can be used to explore the country, including safaris, Kilimanjaro day trips, waterfalls, cultural experiences and Zanzibar.

    Flexible programme lengths

Placements can be arranged for different durations depending on your academic requirements and availability.

Short placements can provide an introduction to engineering in Tanzania, while longer internships allow participants to follow projects in greater depth and develop stronger working relationships with local teams.

If you are completing an internship for university credit, required placement hours or a formal training programme, let us know during your application so we can review your requirements.

    Discounts and longer stays

We encourage participants who have the time to consider longer placements, as these generally provide greater professional continuity and learning.

Longer-stay, group and returning-participant discounts may be available, so please ask us when planning your dates.

We can also discuss combining your engineering internship with additional professional, community or travel experiences in Tanzania.

    Who is this programme for?

This internship may be suitable for:

    • Civil engineering students

    • Structural engineering students

    • Construction management students

    • Architecture or built-environment students

    • Engineering graduates

    • Technical college students

    • Apprentices

    • Gap-year students exploring engineering careers

    • Early-career engineers seeking international exposure

No two participants have exactly the same background, so we review each application individually and match your experience as closely as possible with the opportunities available.

    More than an internship abroad

The aim is not simply to travel to Tanzania and say you completed an engineering internship.

We want you to return home with real professional insight, stronger confidence, international experience, greater cultural awareness and a clearer sense of where your engineering career might take you next.

    Dagelijkse activiteiten

    Typical Day

Your engineering placement will not follow exactly the same routine every day, and that is part of what makes the experience valuable.

Some days may be spent on active construction sites, observing site operations, progress, measurements, safety procedures, materials, contractor activity and how engineers respond to practical problems as they arise. Other days may be more office-based, focusing on planning, drawings, reports, costing, scheduling, procurement or project administration.

You should be prepared for early starts, long days and travel, particularly because some construction and development sites may be located on the outer edges of Arusha or outside the city centre. Transport costs can therefore be higher than for some of our other placements, and we recommend budgeting for this before arrival.

The workflow can also vary significantly. One day may be busy with site visits, meetings and technical activity; another may involve more observation, documentation or preparation while a project is waiting for materials, approvals or the next construction stage. Real engineering work is not constantly action-packed, and learning how projects are planned and coordinated between active phases is an important part of the placement too.

To get the most from the experience, you will need to be proactive, curious, patient and willing to ask questions. Participants who engage with the engineers, take notes, show interest in the project and volunteer to assist with appropriate tasks usually gain the most.

What might your schedule look like?

07:00–07:30 Breakfast and prepare for the day
    07:30–08:00 Depart for placement/site
08:00 Report to the engineering team
08:00–12:30 Site work, project observation, meetings, planning or technical activities
    12:30–13:30 Lunch break
13:30–16:00/17:00 Continue site work, administration, reporting or project activities
Late afternoon Travel back to accommodation

Times are approximate and may change depending on the project, site location and activities scheduled that day.

Some days may finish earlier, while active site days or projects outside Arusha can run longer. Flexibility is important.

Once your placement day is finished, the evening is yours to relax, spend time with other interns or explore Arusha. Weekends are generally free for safaris, hikes, cultural activities and travel.

    Night life

The social life in Tanzania is amazing, because Tanzanians are so open, friendly and love a good laugh. Tanzanian’s are famous in East Africa for their partying. They really do know how to have a good time. Their DJ’s and musicians are some of the best in Africa and there are many bars, clubs and restaurants popular amongst tourists and volunteers where you can let your hair down and socialise with locals and people from across the world.

Siret Trip Adventures provide a unique opportunity for our special volunteers to experience more of Africa's beauty. The Waterfalls

Another hot favourite. Hiking across lush vegetation to the spectacular waterfalls.

    Safari

Ah yes, what Tanzania is world famous for. Safari is once in a lifetime adventure that is unique to the Africa experience. Unforgettable and jaw dropping landscapes is what is promised. This will need you to sacrifice some days, so please ensure you organise this long in advance.
