    Over het programma

Step into the heart of the Peruvian Amazon and gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced wildlife veterinarians at a fully licensed rescue and rehabilitation centre.

Designed for veterinary students and graduates, this internship offers a unique opportunity to develop practical clinical skills while contributing to the rescue, rehabilitation and conservation of some of the Amazon's most iconic wildlife. Every day presents new learning opportunities, whether you're assisting with health assessments, observing medical procedures, supporting rehabilitation programmes or helping care for animals preparing for release back into the wild.

Working with a multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, biologists and conservation professionals, you'll gain valuable insight into wildlife medicine, animal welfare, rehabilitation, conservation research and environmental education. Throughout your placement, you'll build practical experience while developing a deeper understanding of the challenges facing Amazonian wildlife and the vital role veterinary medicine plays in protecting endangered species.

    What will I be doing?

Every internship is tailored to your academic background, previous experience and learning objectives. Depending on your level of training and the needs of the rescue centre, you may have the opportunity to:

    • Assist with wildlife health assessments, clinical examinations and daily welfare monitoring.
    • Support the care of adult animals, nursery animals and new arrivals in quarantine.
    • Observe and assist with the rescue, emergency treatment and rehabilitation of species such as manatees, primates, ocelots, tapirs, anteaters and many other native Amazonian animals.
    • Prepare specialised diets, assist with feeding and monitor growth, behaviour and recovery.
    • Observe and assist with routine health checks, emergency cases and veterinary rounds.
    • Gain practical experience with wildlife handling techniques, blood sampling, clinical examinations and diagnostic procedures under professional supervision.
    • Support treatment plans, medication administration and patient monitoring.
    • Attend lectures and practical workshops covering wildlife medicine, conservation, rehabilitation techniques, South American wildlife and animal welfare.
    • Learn how rehabilitation and release plans are developed for individual animals.
    • Contribute to conservation planning, protocol development and ongoing research projects.
    • Undertake or assist with a research project where appropriate to support your university studies or professional interests.

Throughout your placement, you'll receive a combination of practical experience, theoretical teaching and one-to-one guidance from the veterinary team, allowing you to develop both your clinical knowledge and confidence in a real conservation setting.

    What can I expect?

You'll live and work at a wildlife rescue centre surrounded by the Amazon rainforest, becoming part of a passionate international team dedicated to protecting Peru's wildlife. The on-site veterinarians, biologists and animal care staff provide ongoing supervision and mentoring, creating a supportive environment where learning is encouraged and every day brings new experiences.

Beyond the clinic, you'll gain a broader understanding of wildlife conservation through rehabilitation programmes, research initiatives and community education. Depending on your placement, you may also have the opportunity to visit other conservation organisations and wildlife projects in the region, expanding your knowledge of Amazonian biodiversity.

    Please note

As a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, the species in our care change throughout the year as animals are rescued, rehabilitated and released. Every internship is different, and while you may work with species such as manatees, primates, ocelots, tapirs and anteaters, we cannot guarantee the presence of any particular species during your stay.

    Arrival Day

Your Amazon adventure begins on a Monday morning. Our team will meet you at Iquitos Airport (or collect you from your hotel if you arrived the day before) before transferring you to RAREC, approximately 1.5 hours from the city.

Once you've settled in, you'll receive a full orientation from our Staff & Volunteer Support Manager. You'll get a tour the rescue centre, meet some of the resident animals, learn about RAREC's conservation mission and rehabilitation programmes, and receive an introduction to living and working safely in the Amazon rainforest.

    A Typical Day

No two days are exactly the same, as every day depends on the needs of the animals currently undergoing rehabilitation. However, a typical day generally follows this schedule:

    7:00am – Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast before preparing for the morning's activities.

8:00am – Morning animal care and veterinary activities

Mornings usually begin by caring for animals in the nursery, quarantine and rehabilitation areas. You'll assist with feeding, cleaning enclosures, preparing specialised diets and providing enrichment before supporting the veterinary team with clinical and rehabilitation activities.

Each week typically includes at least two wildlife health assessments, during which animals may undergo medically necessary anaesthesia for physical examinations, blood collection, on-site haematology and biochemistry, X-rays, ultrasound examinations or treatment of injuries and illnesses. Throughout your placement, you'll also assist with new admissions, patient monitoring and the care of critical nursery and quarantine cases whenever required.

When wildlife rescues occur, veterinary interns are given priority to accompany the veterinary team during admissions, emergency treatment and initial assessments, providing invaluable hands-on learning opportunities.

Throughout your internship, you'll participate in practical workshops covering topics such as wildlife restraint, darting techniques, drug calculations, blood smears and faecal analysis. You'll also attend lectures on wildlife conservation, rehabilitation, anaesthesia, the illegal wildlife trade and wildlife capture techniques, all delivered by RAREC's experienced veterinarians, biologists and senior animal caretakers.

Depending on operational needs, interns may also accompany the veterinary team to provide assistance at other wildlife facilities.

    12:00pm – Lunch

Enjoy a break with fellow interns and staff before the afternoon session.

    1:00pm – 4:00pm – Afternoon practical sessions

Afternoons may include assisting with rehabilitation activities, animal monitoring, enrichment, research projects, medical record keeping or lectures, depending on the day's priorities.

Weekly Domestic Animal Campaign, visiting nearby communities to provide basic veterinary care and parasite treatments for local pets.

Your working day normally finishes around 4:00pm, leaving time to relax, study or enjoy the rainforest surroundings. Interns generally have one day off each week, scheduled according to the team's needs. On your free day, the Volunteer & Staff Support Manager can help organise excursions to explore Iquitos and the surrounding Amazon region.

    Please Note

Veterinary interns have the opportunity to observe and assist with a wide range of veterinary procedures. However, all medical decisions are based solely on the welfare and immediate needs of the animals. No animal is sedated or anaesthetised unless clinically necessary, and daily activities may change depending on emergencies, new rescues and rehabilitation priorities.

    Evenings

At least once each week, volunteers and interns can take part in organised evening activities, including:

    • Guided night walks through the rainforest
    • Movie nights
    • Board game evenings

These activities are a great way to relax, experience the Amazon after dark and get to know fellow participants from around the world.

    Included Excursions

To help you experience even more of the Peruvian Amazon, the following excursions are included depending on the length of your internship:

    2 weeks or more

    • Boat trip along the Amazon River to spot pink river dolphins in their natural habitat.

    4 weeks or more

    • Guided visit to the traditional Belén Market in Iquitos.

    6 weeks or more

    • Excursion to the Aquarium of the Amazon research Center.

    8 weeks or more

    • Excursion to the Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve.

These excursions are designed to complement your internship by giving you a deeper appreciation of the region's wildlife, ecosystems and local culture.

    Accomodatie

    Location & Accommodation

Volunteers live in RAREC’s facilities, located approximately one hour and a half from the city of Iquitos by car (Km 47). Iquitos is the largest city in the region, while RAREC is situated in a remote area, connected to the city by the only road in the region.

Despite its remote location, the center is well equipped. We have a reliable electricity system providing power throughout the day in all facilities, as well as strong internet connection supported by three Starlink antennas placed in different areas of the property.

    The Property

RAREC is built on a large natural area, of which only about one fifth has been developed. The construction has been carefully integrated into the environment, preserving the surrounding forest. Built areas include animal enclosures, volunteer accommodation, and shared structures made of wood and natural materials, such as the kitchen, dining room, and recreation spaces. These facilities are designed to be comfortable while maintaining a close connection to nature.

The rest of the land remains untouched jungle. Within this natural environment, volunteers can explore walking trails and reach the creek located at the end of the property.

    Accommodation

Volunteers are assigned shared rooms, typically with other volunteers. The rooms are built with natural wood and noble materials and include bunk beds, mosquito nets for beds and windows, and one fan per bed to ensure comfort in the tropical climate.

A laundry machine is available free of use for all volunteers.

    Jungle Experience & Free Time

RAREC offers a unique balance between comfort and immersion in nature. Volunteers stay surrounded by the sounds and atmosphere of the Amazon rainforest, providing a true jungle experience while still enjoying practical and comfortable living conditions.

On days off, volunteers are free to explore the region. The road connecting RAREC to Iquitos provides access to nearby tourist destinations. Volunteers may also request support from our coordinator to join excursions as a guide or translator. In these cases, volunteers cover only the costs of transport, entrance fees, and meals.

    Eten & Drank

The program fee includes three daily meals:

    • Breakfast: fruit juice and pancakes are served 2 times per week by our cook. On other days, breakfast is self-service with free access to ingredients in the volunteer dining area, allowing you to prepare your own breakfast. Available items include eggs, bread rolls, yogurt, jam, oatmeal, cereals, coffee, teas. Seasonal fresh fruit is also available depending on availability.
    • Lunch (12:00 pm): a typical Peruvian meal prepared by our kitchen, usually consisting of a main dish with rice, beans, lentils, pasta or quinoa, accompanied by fruit and a drink.
    • Dinner (6:00 pm): lighter meals such as soups, sandwiches, salads, or pasta.

Throughout the day, volunteers can also use the shared kitchen and stocked ingredients, which typically include basics such as pasta, eggs, spices, sauces, and other cooking essentials.

We do not serve desserts, but sometimes we like to surprise people on site with something sweet! We also offer options for different dietary needs:

    • Vegetarian à available, though variety may be more limited during long stays. The menu includes soy meat or vegetable stews such as mushrooms, carrots, green beans, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, as well as eggs and sometimes cheese.
    • Vegan, halal, kosher à possible, but volunteers must bring additional supplements or preferred protein sources
    • Gluten-free à limited variety available: we do not have a variety of gluten-free products, so we do not serve gluten-free bread, or if there is pasta, we do not serve gluten-free pasta, rice is used as the main alternative
    • Nut allergy (non-airborne): can be accommodated
    • Severe or multiple allergies / highly restrictive diets: may be difficult to accommodate

Please note that we are unable to guarantee suitability for extremely strict dietary requirements or highly sensitive allergies, as meals are prepared in a shared kitchen environment.
