A Different Kind of Gap Year in Zanzibar:

The Diploma of Global Citizenship in Community Development – Early Childhood Education & Development is an immersive 6 or 12-week Academy experience based in Zanzibar, Tanzania, combining meaningful international volunteering, practical early childhood education experience, Global Citizenship learning, personal development, cultural immersion and travel.

Think of it as travel, volunteering and learning all rolled into one.

For 6 or 12 weeks, Zanzibar becomes home. You'll live alongside an international Academy cohort, spend your weekdays working consistently within our community education initiative, learn alongside Tanzanian educators, take part in practical workshops and cultural experiences, explore your own personal development and work towards a meaningful Legacy Project with your placement.

Around all of that, you'll experience what makes Zanzibar such an incredible place to spend part of your gap year. Think white-sand beaches, the Indian Ocean, Swahili culture, tropical island life, local food, snorkelling, Stone Town, weekend adventures and social life with your Academy cohort.

And your experience doesn't stop at the island. You'll also journey across to mainland Tanzania, travelling through the Usambara Mountains and northern Tanzania before experiencing one of the country's greatest adventures — safari.

The experience is designed to be fun, social, adventurous and genuinely meaningful, while giving you something substantial to carry forward when you return home.

Alongside the Academy, you'll complete the academic requirements of the relevant Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Community Development, giving you an accredited outcome alongside your international practical experience.

Inspired by the Folk School Experience:

The Academy takes inspiration from the Scandinavian folk school concept: bringing young people together to live, learn, travel and grow through shared real-world experiences rather than making education something that only happens inside a classroom.

We've adapted that philosophy to something we know extremely well — international volunteering and community development in Tanzania.

After years of working with international volunteers, we've learned that ethical volunteering is a collaborative effort. Choosing an ethical, community-led organisation is incredibly important, but the volunteer themselves also plays a major role in whether their contribution is genuinely positive.

Working within another country and culture can be complicated. Development challenges are rarely caused by one simple problem with one obvious solution. They're often interconnected and influenced by economics, education, health, history, culture, access to opportunity, family structures and many other factors. Cultural expectations and ways of communicating can also differ significantly from what you're accustomed to at home.

That's why the Academy doesn't simply send you to a placement each morning.

We provide structured guidance and Global Citizenship education alongside your practical experience, helping you understand cultural context, question assumptions, explore root causes rather than only visible symptoms, build meaningful relationships and think critically about what responsible and sustainable contribution actually looks like.

The goal isn't to tell you what to think. It's to give you the tools, experiences and perspectives to think more deeply about the world you're experiencing firsthand.

Your Early Childhood Education & Development Placement:

At the heart of your Academy experience is your consistent placement within our community education initiative in Zanzibar.

You'll work alongside Tanzanian educators supporting young children during an incredibly important stage of their cognitive, emotional, physical and social development.

Early childhood education creates important foundations for later learning, while providing children with opportunities to develop communication, confidence, independence, creativity, friendships and early literacy and numeracy skills.

You'll become part of the everyday learning environment, working alongside local educators rather than replacing them. Your role is to provide additional support and ideas while learning from the people who understand their children, families and community best.

Depending on the day, you might support early literacy and numeracy, basic English, storytelling, songs, arts and crafts, sensory activities, creative play, movement, outdoor games or small-group learning.

Play is an important part of the approach. You'll explore how creative, interactive and play-based activities can support children's development while adapting ideas to the cultural context, resources and realities of education in Zanzibar.

No two mornings will be exactly the same — and that's part of working with young children!

Become Part of the Classroom, Rather Than Passing Through It:

One of the biggest advantages of the Academy is consistency.

You're not spending a handful of mornings at a school before moving on.

During your first weeks, your priority is to learn. You'll observe how the learning environment operates, understand daily routines, get to know the educators and children and gradually build relationships.

As the weeks progress, your role develops naturally.

You'll become increasingly confident supporting activities, working with smaller groups, preparing learning experiences and contributing ideas alongside local educators. You'll begin recognising individual children's personalities and learning styles and develop a much stronger understanding of both the strengths and challenges within the learning environment.

Participants joining the 12-week Academy naturally have even more time to develop those relationships, deepen their understanding and take greater responsibility where appropriate.

That consistency allows you to move beyond the surface level of international volunteering and become a genuinely useful additional member of the learning environment.

Global Citizenship in the Real World:

Your placement is only one part of what you're learning.

Throughout the Academy, you'll participate in practical Global Citizenship sessions exploring some of the bigger questions surrounding international volunteering and development.

    • What does ethical volunteering actually mean?
    • Why can well-intentioned projects sometimes cause unintended problems?
    • What's the difference between addressing a symptom and understanding its root cause?
    • How do culture, privilege, economics and access to opportunity influence the challenges communities experience?
    • What is capacity building?
    • How can international volunteers contribute without taking over?
    • And how do we ensure local people remain at the centre of decisions affecting their own communities?

These aren't designed as traditional classroom lectures. Sessions are interactive and closely connected to what you're actually experiencing in Zanzibar.

Something you notice at your placement might become part of a discussion the following afternoon. A workshop may cause you to reconsider something you interpreted very differently during your first week.

That's where the real learning happens: learning something, experiencing it, questioning it and then taking that new understanding back into the real world.

Work Towards a Meaningful Legacy Project:

As your understanding of the placement grows, you'll begin working collaboratively towards one of the most important components of the Academy: your Legacy Project.

Rather than arriving in Zanzibar with assumptions about what children, educators or the community need, you'll spend time speaking with local educators, observing the learning environment and understanding their priorities.

Then you'll work alongside your placement and other Academy participants to develop something practical that can continue being useful after your cohort leaves.

Within Early Childhood Education & Development, this could involve developing a bank of literacy or numeracy activities, reusable phonics resources, play-based activity cards, sensory activities, classroom learning stations, outdoor games or educator-friendly activity guides using affordable and locally available materials.

You'll have time to develop the idea, trial it within the learning environment, receive feedback, make changes and create a proper handover.

The purpose isn't to produce something that simply looks impressive.

It's to contribute something realistic, culturally relevant, sustainable and genuinely useful to the educators and community who will continue the work long after you return home.

Personal Growth Is Part of the Journey:

The Academy isn't only about what you can contribute to your placement.

It's also about what happens to you when you move to a tropical island off the coast of East Africa and build a life somewhere completely different from home.

For some participants, this will be their first significant experience travelling independently or living away from home. You'll navigate a different culture, build relationships with people from completely different backgrounds, solve problems independently and experience situations that challenge your expectations and perspectives.

Weekly personal growth, self-awareness and reflection sessions give you space to process that journey.

Through workshops, group discussions and your Global Impact Journal, you'll explore topics such as confidence, independence, identity, values, resilience, communication, leadership, relationships, assumptions, cultural adjustment and future direction.

You won't simply finish the program having experienced a lot.

You'll have been encouraged to think about what those experiences actually taught you.

    Learn From Zanzibar:

Living in Zanzibar gives you an opportunity to experience the island far beyond the perspective of a typical holiday.

Cultural immersion is therefore woven throughout the Academy.

You'll learn practical Swahili, experience local food and traditions, participate in cultural workshops and learn from Tanzanian educators, community partners and guest speakers.

Zanzibar has its own distinctive history and identity, shaped over centuries by African, Swahili, Arab and Indian Ocean influences. Living on the island gives you the opportunity to experience those influences in everyday life while developing a much deeper understanding of the community you're working within.

But some of the most important cultural learning will happen without you even noticing.

It happens when you begin using Swahili words naturally. When you know your way around Paje. When you understand something at your placement that completely confused you during Week 1. When you discover your favourite local food or café. When you make a cultural mistake and learn from it.

Over time, Zanzibar starts feeling less like somewhere you're visiting and more like somewhere you're actually living.

Experience Island Life — And Mainland Tanzania:

And while the Academy has genuine educational and community-development foundations, we haven't forgotten one very important thing:

You're spending your gap year in Zanzibar.

Your Academy home base places you on Zanzibar's beautiful east coast, with the Indian Ocean, beaches and island life becoming part of your everyday experience.

Travel and adventure are built into the Academy.

Across your program, you'll head out on Adventure Days and experiences that may include Stone Town, snorkelling and ocean adventures, Jozani, beaches, local food and cultural experiences, island exploration and plenty of opportunities to enjoy Zanzibar with your Academy cohort.

But we don't want you to travel all the way to Tanzania and experience only one side of the country.

Your Academy therefore also includes a major journey to mainland Tanzania.

During the 6-week Academy, you'll travel by ferry from Zanzibar to the mainland and journey through the Usambara Mountains towards Arusha and northern Tanzania, before experiencing an unforgettable safari through Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

The 12-week Academy gives you time to take that adventure even further, with an extended overland experience through mainland Tanzania and some of the country's most extraordinary landscapes and wildlife destinations.

You won't have to choose between doing something meaningful and having the adventure you dreamed about when you decided to take a gap year.

The two are intentionally built together.

    Live the Experience Together:

A huge part of the Academy is the people you'll share it with.

Unlike our regular rolling volunteer programs, Academy participants join on set intake dates, meaning you'll arrive and progress through the experience alongside your cohort.

You'll live together at our Academy home base in Zanzibar, close to the beach on the island's east coast, while participants complete different internship pathways across community development, health and other fields.

Everyone's placement experience may be different, but you'll come together throughout the week for workshops, cultural activities, adventures and social events.

There'll be shared meals, beach afternoons, games and movie nights, free time, weekend adventures, spontaneous plans and regular social events.

Thursday evening is generally our main debrief and social night, giving everyone a chance to catch up on the week before heading out or enjoying an event together at home.

    And you'll still have independence.

There is downtime built into the program, particularly on Friday afternoons and Sundays, giving you time to head to the beach, explore the island, meet friends, relax, organise your own activities or occasionally do absolutely nothing.

Because living abroad shouldn't feel like a school excursion where every minute is scheduled for you.

Finish With Experience You Can Carry Forward:

Alongside everything you're experiencing in Zanzibar, you'll be completing the academic components of your Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Community Development.

The qualification is Ofqual-regulated at Level 3 and carries 16 UCAS Tariff points in the UK. Depending on the specific qualification and recognition arrangements, it may also correspond to approximately 20–21 ECTS credits in Europe. Recognition and credit transfer can vary between countries and institutions, so participants should confirm how the qualification may be recognised by their own university or education provider.

You'll also develop skills that extend well beyond early childhood education: cross-cultural communication, teaching and facilitation, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, critical thinking, community engagement, independence and responsible international practice.

For participants considering future study or careers in education, childcare, teaching, psychology, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work, community services, international development or related fields, the placement provides particularly relevant practical exposure.

But you don't need to have your future figured out before you arrive.

That's part of what a gap year can be for.

Boresha Global Academy gives you 6 or 12 weeks to get out into the world, experience a different way of life, challenge yourself, learn alongside Tanzanian educators and communities, make friends from around the world and discover more about where you might want to go next.

It's not just a volunteer placement. It's not just a course. And it's definitely not just a holiday.

It's a travel, volunteering and learning experience all in one — giving you the adventure of a gap year, the depth of living abroad, the purpose of meaningful community engagement and the future value of an accredited Global Citizenship qualification.

    A Typical Day

Life at Boresha Global Academy follows a consistent weekly rhythm, combining your internship placement with Global Citizenship learning, culture, personal development, social life and adventure.

    Mornings | Your Placement

Weekdays begin with breakfast at your Academy home base before heading to your early childhood education placement.

You'll spend the morning working alongside Tanzanian educators and young children. Depending on the day, you might assist with learning activities, support small groups with letters or numbers, read stories, organise creative activities, introduce play-based learning, lead games and movement, or provide additional one-to-one encouragement.

Your role develops throughout the program. Initially, you'll focus on learning routines, meeting the educators and children and understanding how the learning environment operates. As your confidence grows, you'll become increasingly involved in activities and small-group learning.

Later in the program, placement time will also contribute towards your Legacy Project, developed collaboratively around something your placement identifies as genuinely useful.

    Tuesday | Global Citizenship

After placement, Tuesday afternoons focus on Global Citizenship and ethical international engagement.

Through interactive workshops, discussions and case studies, you'll explore topics such as ethical volunteering, cultural perspectives, root causes, sustainability, capacity building and community-led development.

These sessions connect directly with what you're experiencing at placement, helping you look beyond first impressions and better understand the complex factors influencing the communities you're working alongside.

    Wednesday | Culture & Connection

After placement, Wednesday afternoons are more experiential.

Depending on the week, you might have a Swahili lesson, Zanzibari cooking experience, local cultural workshop, traditional art, music or dance activity, guest speaker or another opportunity to learn more about the island and its communities.

It's a fun way to experience Zanzibar beyond its beaches while becoming increasingly comfortable in the place you're calling home.

Thursday | Personal Growth + Social Night

After placement, Thursday turns the focus towards personal development.

Your Personal Growth and Global Impact Journal sessions explore topics such as confidence, identity, values, independence, resilience, leadership, communication and cultural adjustment, while giving you time to reflect on everything you're experiencing.

Thursday evening brings everyone together for a relaxed cohort debrief before our regular social night. Some weeks we'll organise something at the Academy; other weeks the group might head out together in Paje.

Friday | Placement + Free Afternoon

Friday is generally another placement morning, with some flexibility depending on your placement and program requirements.

Your afternoon is free. Head to the beach, grab lunch with friends, relax by the pool, explore Paje, organise your own activity or simply enjoy some downtime before the weekend.

    Saturday | Adventure Day

Saturday is usually Adventure Day, when Zanzibar itself becomes part of your education.

Across the program, you'll experience different sides of island life through Stone Town, beaches, snorkelling and ocean adventures, local food, cultural experiences, Jozani and exploring Zanzibar with your Academy cohort.

And some weeks become much bigger adventures.

During the 6-week Academy, you'll leave the island for a major journey across mainland Tanzania, travelling by ferry to the coast before continuing through the Usambara Mountains to Arusha and northern Tanzania, where you'll experience an unforgettable safari through Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

The 12-week Academy takes the adventure even further with an extended overland journey through mainland Tanzania, giving you the opportunity to experience even more of the country's landscapes, wildlife and cultures.

    Sunday | Reset

Sunday is yours. Sleep in, head to the beach, explore the island, go for brunch, spend time with friends, call home, catch up on your journal or simply relax.

    More Than a Weekly Schedule

Although the weekly rhythm stays familiar, your experience develops considerably over time.

The learning environment that feels unfamiliar in Week 1 will look very different by the end of your Academy. You'll know the educators and children, understand more Swahili, know your way around Paje and gradually take greater responsibility at placement.

And between all of that there'll be beach days, safari, island adventures, road trips, dinners, social nights, new foods, cultural experiences, inside jokes and spontaneous adventures with your Academy cohort.

That's what the experience is really about: not simply visiting Zanzibar, but having enough time to live here, learn from it, contribute meaningfully and have an incredible adventure along the way.

Travel Is Built Into the Experience

One thing that makes Boresha Global Academy different from a traditional internship is that travel isn't something you organise around your program — it's built into it.

Your Academy includes island adventures, cultural experiences and major travel across Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. We want you to leave feeling like you've genuinely experienced the country, not simply travelled between your accommodation and placement.

    Saturday Adventure Days:

Most Saturdays are Adventure Days with your Academy cohort. Experiences may include Stone Town, Jozani Forest, snorkelling and ocean adventures, tropical beaches, local communities, Swahili food and culture, and island road trips.

Exact activities vary with season and local conditions, but regular Adventure Days are included.

6-Week Academy | Zanzibar to Safari

Your six-week Academy includes a major mainland adventure.

Travel by ferry from Zanzibar to mainland Tanzania, journey through the beautiful Usambara Mountains, and continue towards Arusha and northern Tanzania.

Your adventure culminates with safari through Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, before returning to Zanzibar for the final stage of your Academy.

It's two completely different sides of Tanzania in one experience: Indian Ocean island life, mountains, road trips and world-famous safari country.

12-Week Academy | The Great Tanzania Overland Adventure:

The 12-Week Academy takes the adventure even further.

Set off from Zanzibar to the Swahili Coast, through the Usambara Mountains and Arusha, before continuing into Tanzania's legendary safari country.

Experience Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, then travel west towards Mwanza and Lake Victoria.

From tropical Zanzibar to mountains, safari country and Lake Victoria, you'll experience an extraordinary cross-section of Tanzania.

Culture, Social Life & Free Time:

During the week, activities may include Swahili, Zanzibari cooking, local art, music, cultural workshops and guest speakers.

Back at the Academy, expect shared meals, beach afternoons, games, movie nights, Thursday social nights and spontaneous plans with your cohort.

Sundays are generally yours. Sleep in, head to the beach, explore Paje, relax by the pool or plan your own adventure.

Your scheduled Adventure Days, overland journeys and Academy cultural experiences are included in your program fee. Independent activities during free time are at your own expense.

The idea is simple: come to Zanzibar for your internship, learning and qualification — and have an incredible adventure across Tanzania while you're here.

    Overnatting

    Your Home in Zanzibar

For the duration of your program, our Zanzibar Academy home becomes your base in Paje — a tropical, social and welcoming place where you'll live alongside your Academy cohort and meet travellers from around the world.

This isn't basic student accommodation. Academy participants stay in comfortable twin or double rooms with their own private bathroom, quality beds, linen, towels, storage and modern amenities. You'll also have Wi-Fi, regular housekeeping and 24/7 private security, giving you a comfortable and secure place to settle into island life.

    More Than Somewhere to Sleep

At the heart of the property is a large swimming pool surrounded by tropical palms, alongside an island restaurant, poolside bar and social spaces where you can eat, study, hang out or relax after placement.

Grab a hammock under the palms, cool off in the pool, catch up on Academy work or settle in for dinner with everyone.

Meals are served at home too, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included Monday–Saturday and breakfast and dinner on Sundays.

The Social Side of Island Life

Expect pool afternoons, shared dinners, games and movie nights, drinks, themed events, Thursday social nights and plenty of spontaneous plans with your cohort and other international travellers.

There's also space to slow down. Catch up on your journal, call home, relax beside the pool or disappear into a hammock for the afternoon.

Live in the Heart of Paje

The property sits on the main road through Paje, with cafés, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, local market stalls and the surrounding community all within easy walking distance.

And just 300 metres from home is Paje's famous white-sand beach and the Indian Ocean, lined with beach bars, restaurants, cafés and nightlife.

It means you don't need to wait for an organised Adventure Day to enjoy Zanzibar. Finish placement and head to the beach, explore Paje, grab dinner with friends or spend the afternoon beside the pool.

    Your Home Between Adventures

Between placement, Academy workshops, beach days, island adventures and your journey across mainland Tanzania, you'll always have somewhere familiar to return to.

Over six or twelve weeks, you'll get to know the team, discover your favourite local spots, develop your own routines and genuinely settle into life in Paje.

It's not just where you stay during the Academy. It's your home in Zanzibar — pool, palms, beach and all — and a huge part of the experience itself.

    Mat og drikke

Your program includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, plus breakfast and dinner on Sundays. Meals are served at your Academy home base or provided as part of the itinerary when you're away on scheduled trips and experiences.

    🍳 Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast before heading to your placement. Breakfast varies but may include eggs, toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereals, tea, coffee and other breakfast options.

    🥗 Lunch

Lunch is included Monday–Saturday. Depending on the day's schedule, you'll either eat at your home base or arrangements will be made around Academy activities, placements and excursions.

Sunday lunch is left open, giving you the chance to head out for brunch or lunch with friends and explore some of Paje's cafés and restaurants.

    🍛 Dinner

Dinner brings everyone back together and is one of the most social parts of life at the Academy.

Meals include a mixture of Tanzanian, international and familiar home-style dishes, giving you the opportunity to experience local food while still having plenty of variety throughout a longer stay.

You might find dishes such as rice, curries, grilled meats, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, chapati, beans and other Tanzanian favourites on the menu, with meals changing regularly.

🌍 Food Is Part of the Experience

Living in Tanzania also means trying what people actually eat here.

Alongside your everyday meals, the Academy includes food and cultural experiences throughout the program. You may learn to prepare local dishes during a cooking session, try local food while exploring Zanzibar, experience coffee from farm to cup in the Kilimanjaro region, or discover something completely new while travelling with your cohort.

We encourage you to be adventurous — food is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience another culture.

    🥤 Drinks & Dietary Requirements

Drinking water is available at your Academy home base, while tea and coffee are available.

Specific dietary needs before arrival so our team can confirm what can be accommodated.

And because you'll be living in Paje rather than staying inside an isolated campus, you're also free to explore. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, local eateries and nightlife around the city for the days when you feel like heading somewhere different with friends.

Unlike our standard volunteer programs, the Boresha Global Academy does not operate on a rolling-start basis. These are structured, cohort-based programs with set intake dates, allowing participants to arrive, learn, volunteer, travel and experience Tanzania together as a group.

You can choose between two program formats:

    🌍 6-Week Global Citizenship Academy
A complete six-week Academy experience combining a consistent internship placement with Global Citizenship learning, personal development, cultural immersion, a collaborative Legacy Project and travel across both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Alongside island life and adventures, you'll journey to the mainland through the Usambara Mountains to Arusha before experiencing an unforgettable northern Tanzania safari.

    🎓 12-Week Global Citizenship Academy
Our most immersive Academy experience, giving you three months to develop deeper relationships and practical experience within your placement while exploring Global Citizenship, personal development and Tanzanian culture in greater depth. You'll work towards a substantial Legacy Project and experience an extended adventure across Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.

    More Than an Internship

Your time in Zanzibar is designed to build progressively. You'll begin by settling into island life and learning to understand your placement and its local context before moving more deeply into Global Citizenship, ethical engagement and meaningful contribution.

Throughout both the 6 and 12-week Academies, you'll work collaboratively towards a Legacy Project identified alongside your placement, giving you the opportunity to apply what you've learned to something practical and genuinely useful. Participants on the 12-week Academy naturally have additional time to develop their placement relationships, explore complex development issues and build a more substantial project.

Throughout both programs, you'll share the experience with your Academy cohort — living together, learning together and exploring together, through beach days, social nights, dinners, cultural experiences, island adventures, mainland road trips, safari and plenty of spontaneous moments in between.

Please note: Because these programs follow a structured curriculum and group itinerary, participants must join one of the advertised intake dates rather than selecting individual arrival dates or program durations. Places are limited for each cohort.
