A Different Kind of Gap Year in Tanzania

The Diploma of Global Citizenship in Global Health – Mental Health & Psychiatric Care is a 12-week immersive Academy experience based in Arusha, northern Tanzania, combining a professional mental-health internship, Global Citizenship learning, personal development, cultural immersion and travel.

Think of it as travel, an international internship and learning all rolled into one.

For three months, Tanzania becomes home. You'll live alongside an international Academy cohort, spend your weekdays gaining consistent experience within the Mental Health Department of a local Tanzanian hospital, learn alongside psychiatric-trained nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers and other mental-health practitioners, take part in practical workshops and cultural experiences, explore your own personal development and work towards a substantial Legacy Project connected to your placement.

Around all of that, you'll experience the reason Tanzania is such an extraordinary place to spend a gap year. There are safaris and mountains, waterfalls and coffee country, Swahili and local food, cultural experiences and weekly adventures, social nights in Arusha and an unforgettable journey to Zanzibar.

The experience is designed to be fun, social, adventurous and professionally valuable, while giving you something substantial to carry forward into your studies, career and life when you return home.

Alongside the Academy, you'll complete the academic requirements of the relevant Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Global Health, giving you an accredited outcome alongside three months of international practical experience.

Inspired by the Folk School Experience

The Academy takes inspiration from the Scandinavian folk school concept: bringing young people together to live, learn, travel and grow through shared real-world experiences rather than making education something that only happens inside a classroom.

We've adapted that philosophy to something we know extremely well — international internships, ethical volunteering and community-based learning in Tanzania.

After years of working with international participants, we've learned that ethical international experience is a collaborative effort. Choosing an ethical, locally led organisation is incredibly important, but the participant themselves also plays a major role in whether their contribution is genuinely positive.

Working within another country's healthcare system can be complex. Approaches to mental health are shaped by far more than clinical theory alone. Culture, family structures, socioeconomic circumstances, stigma, religion and beliefs, access to services, available resources and community attitudes can all influence how mental illness is understood, discussed and treated.

That's why the Academy doesn't simply send you to a hospital each morning.

We provide structured guidance and Global Citizenship education alongside your practical experience, helping you understand cultural context, question assumptions, explore global health inequalities and consider what culturally responsive and ethical mental-health practice can look like across different settings.

The goal isn't to tell you what to think. It's to give you the tools, experiences and perspectives to think more deeply about the mental-health system you're experiencing firsthand.

    About the Program

Your Mental Health & Psychiatric Care internship takes place within the Mental Health Department of a local hospital in Arusha, where you'll learn alongside Tanzanian professionals supporting people experiencing a broad range of psychological, behavioural and psychiatric needs.

The department brings together professionals including psychiatric-trained nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers and mental-health practitioners, providing an opportunity to observe how multidisciplinary mental-health care operates within the Tanzanian healthcare system.

Depending on your existing education, experience, professional scope and supervision, your internship may expose you to clinical assessments, counselling and group sessions, case discussions, treatment planning, psychoeducation, family support, documentation and other aspects of psychiatric and psychological care.

Learning may also extend beyond the hospital through community mental-health initiatives, awareness activities, sober houses and other community-based services where available.

    Why Global Mental Health?

Mental-health challenges exist in every part of the world, but the resources, attitudes and systems available to respond to them can differ enormously.

In Tanzania, mental-health professionals work within a social and healthcare environment shaped by factors including stigma, limited resources, socioeconomic circumstances, family and community structures, cultural understandings of mental illness and barriers to accessing professional support.

Experiencing mental-health practice in this environment provides an opportunity to look beyond the theories and systems you may be familiar with at home.

Rather than assuming one model of mental healthcare can simply be transferred from one country to another, you'll be encouraged to explore how professionals adapt their approach to the cultural, social and practical realities of the communities they serve.

    Our Approach

Boresha Global Academy was created around the belief that ethical volunteering is a collaborative effort between both the organisation and the volunteer.

Finding an ethical organisation is only one part of the journey. Understanding another culture, recognising different perspectives, navigating complex social challenges and learning how to contribute respectfully are equally important.

That's why your placement is supported by our Global Citizenship curriculum. Throughout the Academy, you'll explore topics including culture, ethics, development, sustainability, root causes versus symptoms, responsible engagement and capacity building—all while connecting these ideas directly to your experiences in Tanzania.

Rather than asking, "How can I help?" you'll also learn to ask, "How can I listen, understand and contribute in a way that is genuinely useful?"

Your Mental Health & Psychiatric Care Internship

Every day can look different depending on the needs of the department, current patients, your professional background and the level of supervision available.

Depending on your qualifications and scope, opportunities may include observing or participating appropriately in clinical assessments, individual and group counselling, case discussions, treatment planning, psychoeducation, family support, patient documentation and community mental-health activities.

You may also have opportunities to learn through external services and initiatives, including mental-health awareness activities, sober houses and community-based programs, helping you understand how support can extend beyond a hospital setting.

Your level of involvement is always determined by your existing education, experience and professional scope, alongside the judgement and supervision of the local healthcare team. This is a learning environment first: participants are there to learn alongside and support Tanzanian professionals, never replace them.

Because mental healthcare involves sensitive and confidential information, professionalism, appropriate boundaries, patient dignity and confidentiality are essential throughout your internship.

    Growing Throughout the 12 Weeks

One of the biggest advantages of a longer mental-health internship is having the time to move beyond simply observing a different healthcare system.

Your first weeks focus on listening, observing and understanding — becoming familiar with the department, local approaches to care, professional expectations and the cultural context surrounding mental health in Tanzania.

As your relationships with the team develop and supervisors better understand your skills and experience, you may become increasingly involved in appropriate activities within your professional scope.

Over time, you'll also begin connecting what you're experiencing in the hospital with the wider questions explored through your Global Citizenship learning: Why do people seek—or avoid—mental-health support? How does culture affect diagnosis and treatment? What happens when demand exceeds available resources? How can mental-health initiatives remain culturally relevant and sustainable?

This consistency creates a much richer experience than simply visiting a hospital for a short observational placement.

    Your Legacy Project

Towards the later stages of the Academy, you'll complete a meaningful Legacy Project connected directly to your placement.

This isn't about arriving with a Western solution to Tanzania's mental-health challenges. Instead, you'll work collaboratively with local professionals to identify something they consider genuinely useful.

Depending on the department's priorities, this could involve psychoeducation resources, mental-health awareness materials, patient or family information, community education tools, workshop resources or another initiative identified by the local team.

The Legacy Project brings together everything you've explored throughout the Academy: global mental health, ethics, cultural awareness, sustainability, teamwork and responsible international engagement.

    Life Beyond Your Placement

Your internship is only one part of the Academy experience.

Every week combines practical community work with interactive Global Citizenship lessons, personal growth workshops, Swahili and cultural learning, reflection through your Global Impact Journal and plenty of opportunities to experience Tanzania beyond the classroom.

Travel is built into the program, with regular Adventure Days exploring northern Tanzania through waterfalls, coffee country, cultural experiences, mountains, local food, cycling, hot springs and much more.

You'll also experience an unforgettable multi-day safari and finish the journey with an included four-day Zanzibar excursion, discovering the completely different landscapes and Swahili coastal culture of the Indian Ocean.

Back at your Academy home in Arusha, life is equally memorable. Shared meals, games nights, movie nights, social events and Thursday nights out quickly turn your international cohort into a close group of friends from around the world.

    What You'll Learn

By completing the Academy, you'll gain far more than international experience.

You'll develop a deeper understanding of global mental health, culturally responsive practice, interdisciplinary care, communication, professional boundaries, healthcare inequality and cross-cultural collaboration, while seeing firsthand how social, cultural and economic factors influence mental-health care.

Alongside your internship, you'll complete the academic requirements of the Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Global Health, creating a valuable qualification that complements the real-world experience gained throughout your twelve weeks in Tanzania.

Most importantly, you'll leave with greater confidence, independence, resilience and a much broader perspective of the world—having spent three months not simply visiting Tanzania, but genuinely living, learning and contributing within it.

    Typisk dag

    A Typical Day

Life at Boresha Global Academy follows a consistent weekly rhythm, combining your Mental Health & Psychiatric Care internship with Global Citizenship learning, culture, personal development, social life and adventure.

Mornings | Your Mental Health & Psychiatric Care Internship

Weekdays begin with breakfast at your Academy home base before heading to your internship within the Mental Health Department of a local hospital in Arusha.

Depending on your existing education, experience, professional scope and supervision, your day might include observing or participating appropriately in clinical assessments, counselling or group sessions, case discussions, treatment planning, psychoeducation, family support and patient documentation.

Some days may be primarily hospital-based, while others can introduce you to the wider mental-health system through community awareness initiatives, sober houses or other community-based services where available.

Your role develops throughout the program. Initially, you’ll focus on understanding the department, observing local approaches to mental-health care, learning professional expectations and building relationships with the team. As supervisors become familiar with your skills and experience, you may become more involved in appropriate activities and eventually work towards your collaborative Legacy Project.

Because you’re working within a real healthcare environment, patient dignity, confidentiality, professional boundaries and working within your individual scope of practice are an important part of every day.

    Tuesday | Global Citizenship

After placement, Tuesday afternoons focus on Global Citizenship and ethical international engagement.

Through interactive workshops, discussions and case studies, you’ll explore topics including ethical volunteering, cultural perspectives, gender and development, inequality, root causes, sustainability, capacity building and community-led change.

These sessions connect directly with your placement, encouraging you to look beyond visible challenges and explore how education, employment, childcare, economic opportunity, culture and social systems can influence Health and Medical Care Challenges.

    Wednesday | Culture & Connection

After placement, Wednesday afternoons are more experiential.

Depending on the week, you might have a Swahili lesson, Tanzanian cooking class, Maasai cultural experience, traditional art, music or dance workshop, local guest speaker or another cultural activity. It’s a fun way to understand Tanzania beyond your internship while becoming increasingly comfortable in the country you’re calling home.

Thursday | Personal Growth + Social Night

After placement, Thursday turns the focus towards personal development.

Your Personal Growth and Global Impact Journal sessions explore confidence, identity, values, independence, resilience, leadership, communication, boundaries and cultural adjustment, while giving you structured time to process your experience.

Thursday evening brings everyone together for a relaxed cohort debrief before our regular social night. Some weeks we’ll organise something at home; other weeks the group heads out together in Arusha!

Friday | Placement + Free Afternoon

Friday is generally another placement morning, with some flexibility depending on placement and program requirements.

Your afternoon is free. Explore Arusha, grab lunch with friends, relax at home, head to the gym or pool, or enjoy some downtime before the weekend.

    Saturday | Adventure Day

Saturday is Adventure Day, when Tanzania itself becomes part of your education.

Across the program, you’ll experience northern Tanzania through waterfall hikes, coffee country, cultural experiences, hot springs, cycling, local food and adventures around Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro and Lake Manyara.

Some weekends become bigger adventures. Your program includes a northern Tanzania safari, and during the 12-week Academy you’ll also travel to Zanzibar for Swahili coastal culture and island life.

    Sunday | Reset

Sunday is yours. Sleep in, explore Arusha, go for brunch, spend time with friends, call home, catch up on your journal or simply relax.

    More Than a Weekly Schedule

Although the rhythm stays familiar, your relationship with the placement changes considerably over time.

The centre that feels unfamiliar in Week 1 becomes a community you understand far more deeply by Week 8. You’ll know the staff and women, better understand how different programs connect and become more confident identifying where your skills can contribute appropriately.

Along the way there’ll also be safari, waterfalls, road trips, dinners, party nights, new foods, cultural experiences, inside jokes and spontaneous adventures with your Academy cohort.

Travel Is Built Into the Experience

One of the things that makes Boresha Global Academy different from a traditional internship is that travel isn't something you have to organise around your program — it's built into it.

Your Academy fee includes a calendar of day trips, cultural experiences, adventures and major travel experiences across Tanzania. We want you to finish your program feeling like you've genuinely experienced the country, not simply travelled between your accommodation and placement each day.

    Saturday Adventure Days:

Most Saturdays are Adventure Days, when you'll head out with your Academy cohort to explore northern Tanzania.

Across the program, experiences may include Mount Meru waterfall hikes; Moshi and the Kilimanjaro region; coffee plantations and Chagga culture; Maasai and Hadzabe cultural experiences; cycling through Mto wa Mbu and banana plantations; Lake Manyara; canoeing; natural hot springs; Tanzanian food; local markets; art experiences; Cultural Heritage and Tanzanite; and a walking safari in Arusha National Park.

Your exact itinerary may vary with season, weather and local conditions, but regular Adventure Days are included throughout the Academy.

    Two Signature Overland Adventures:

Some of the biggest adventures happen on the road.

On the 12-Week Flagship Academy, two major overland journeys are built into your experience. The first takes you deep into Tanzania’s legendary safari country, through Ngorongoro and the Serengeti before continuing to Mwanza and the shores of Lake Victoria.

Later, you’ll experience a completely different side of Tanzania, travelling from the mountains of northern Tanzania towards the Swahili Coast and across to Zanzibar, where four days of island life, Stone Town, ocean adventures and white-sand beaches await.

On the 6-Week Fast-Track Academy, you’ll still experience the full Safari to Lake Victoria overland adventure, alongside your scheduled Adventure Days and cultural experiences in and around Arusha.

Culture, Social Life & Free Time:

The experiences continue during the week too. Depending on the schedule, afternoons may include Swahili, Tanzanian cooking, local art, music, dance and cultural workshops.

Back at your Academy home base, expect games and movie nights, shared dinners, Thursday social and party nights, and plenty of spontaneous plans with the people you’re living alongside.

Sundays are generally yours. Sleep in, relax, explore Arusha, meet friends or plan an extra adventure.

Your scheduled Adventure Days, overland journeys and organised Academy cultural experiences are included in your program fee. Anything you independently choose to organise during your personal free time is at your own expense.

The idea is simple: come to Tanzania for your internship, learning and qualification — but have an incredible time experiencing the country while you’re here.

You bring your spending money. We take care of the rest.

Henting fra flyplassen på Kilimanjaro International Airport

Because your international flights are arranged as part of the Academy program, we'll know exactly when to expect you.

When you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a member of our local team will be waiting to greet you and welcome you to Tanzania. From there, your airport transfer is fully arranged, taking you directly to your Academy home base in Arusha where you can settle in, meet the team and begin getting to know your new home.

After a long international journey, there's no need to worry about navigating transport, arranging taxis or working out where to go — we'll be there from the moment you arrive.

    Overnatting

For the duration of your program, The White House of Tanzania becomes your home in Arusha — a comfortable, social and welcoming base where you'll live alongside your Academy cohort and meet travellers from around the world.

This isn't basic student accommodation. Academy participants stay in comfortable twin or double rooms with their own private bathroom, quality beds, linen, towels, storage and modern amenities. You'll also have Wi-Fi throughout the property, regular housekeeping and full private security, giving you a comfortable and secure place to settle into life in Tanzania.

    More Than Somewhere to Sleep

The White House has been welcoming international travellers to Arusha for more than a decade and was created around the idea of being a home away from home. There are plenty of spaces to find your own favourite spot, whether you want to socialise, study, relax or simply switch off after a busy day.

Around the property you'll find large outdoor hangout areas, gardens, comfortable lounges, a bar and restaurant, pool table, board games, sports and games areas, a movie theatre and social spaces, with plenty of room for the whole group to come together.

Meals are served at home too, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included Monday–Saturday and breakfast and dinner on Sundays, making shared meals another part of everyday Academy life.

The Social Side of Academy Life

Your home base is also where much of the fun happens.

Expect games nights, movie nights, dinners, sports, themed events, drinks, Thursday social and party nights, plus plenty of spontaneous evenings sitting around with people who may have arrived as strangers but quickly become your closest friends.

You'll also share the property with other international travellers visiting Tanzania, creating the fun, multicultural atmosphere that great hostels are known for.

At the same time, there is space to slow down. Grab your laptop and catch up on Academy work, find a quiet corner with a book, call home, relax outside or simply have an early night.

    Your Home Between Adventures

The property is based in Njiro, Arusha, with shops, restaurants, cafés, a supermarket, gym and other everyday amenities nearby, while Arusha's city centre is easily accessible.

After placement days, Academy workshops, safari, waterfall hikes, cultural experiences and weekends exploring Tanzania, you'll always have somewhere familiar to come back to.

Over six or twelve weeks, you'll get to know the team, develop your own routines, make friends and genuinely settle in.

It's not just where you stay during the Academy. It's your home in Tanzania — and a huge part of the experience itself.

    Mat og drikke

Your program includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, plus breakfast and dinner on Sundays. Meals are served at your Academy home base or provided as part of the itinerary when you're away on scheduled trips and experiences.

    🍳 Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast before heading to your placement. Breakfast varies but may include eggs, toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereals, tea, coffee and other breakfast options.

    🥗 Lunch

Lunch is included Monday–Saturday. Depending on the day's schedule, you'll either eat at your home base or arrangements will be made around Academy activities, placements and excursions.

Sunday lunch is left open, giving you the chance to head out for brunch or lunch with friends and explore some of Arusha's cafés and restaurants.

    🍛 Dinner

Dinner brings everyone back together and is one of the most social parts of life at the Academy.

Meals include a mixture of Tanzanian, international and familiar home-style dishes, giving you the opportunity to experience local food while still having plenty of variety throughout a longer stay.

You might find dishes such as rice, curries, grilled meats, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, chapati, beans and other Tanzanian favourites on the menu, with meals changing regularly. With a Pizza oven too, Woodfire Pizza is always a highlight!

🌍 Food Is Part of the Experience

Living in Tanzania also means trying what people actually eat here.

Alongside your everyday meals, the Academy includes food and cultural experiences throughout the program. You may learn to prepare Tanzanian dishes during a cooking session, try local food while exploring Mto wa Mbu, experience coffee from farm to cup in the Kilimanjaro region, or discover something completely new while travelling with your cohort.

We encourage you to be adventurous — food is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience another culture.

    🥤 Drinks & Dietary Requirements

Drinking water is available at your Academy home base, while tea and coffee are available.

Specific dietary needs before arrival so our team can confirm what can be accommodated.

And because you'll be living in Arusha rather than staying inside an isolated campus, you're also free to explore. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, local eateries and nightlife around the city for the days when you feel like heading somewhere different with friends.

Start Dates & Details on Arrival

Unlike our standard volunteer programs, the Boresha Global Academy does not operate on a rolling-start basis. These are structured, cohort-based programs with set intake dates, allowing participants to arrive, learn, volunteer, travel and experience Tanzania together as a group.

You can choose between two program formats:

🎓 12-Week Global Citizenship Academy – Flagship Program
Our complete three-month experience, combining a consistent internship placement with Global Citizenship learning, personal development, cultural immersion, travel and adventure. Participants also work towards a substantial Legacy Project in collaboration with their local placement.

A shorter, more intensive Academy experience for participants who cannot commit to the full three months. You'll still combine your internship with structured learning, cultural experiences, personal development, safari and adventures across northern Tanzania, but within a condensed six-week format.

What Will Your Program Look Like?

Although every week brings something different, the Academy follows a consistent rhythm designed to balance meaningful practical experience with learning, personal growth, travel and plenty of time to enjoy life in Tanzania.

    Monday – Placement
Begin the week at your chosen internship placement, working consistently alongside our Tanzanian partner organisation and gradually building your skills, relationships and understanding.

Tuesday – Placement + Global Citizenship
After your placement, come together for a practical Global Citizenship session exploring topics such as ethical volunteering, sustainable development, culture, root causes, capacity building and responsible international engagement.

    Wednesday – Placement + Culture & Connection
Continue your placement before a more interactive afternoon. Depending on the week, this could include Swahili, Tanzanian cooking, art, cultural workshops, guest speakers, traditional experiences or other activities.

Thursday – Placement + Personal Growth
Thursday combines your placement with self-development, reflection and your Global Impact Journal. Explore confidence, identity, values, resilience, leadership and how living abroad is changing your perspective. Thursday evening is also our regular debrief and social night — and often party night!

Friday – Placement + Free Afternoon
Friday is generally another placement day, followed by a free afternoon to relax, explore Arusha, spend time with friends or simply enjoy your home base. Depending on your placement and program week, there may also be flexibility to take Friday off.

    Saturday – Adventure Day
Saturday is for experiencing Tanzania. Across your program, included adventures may take you hiking to waterfalls, cycling through villages and banana plantations, exploring coffee country, learning from local communities, visiting hot springs or heading into the landscapes surrounding Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

Your program also includes one of Tanzania's ultimate experiences — a two-day safari through the northern safari circuit.

    Sunday – Reset Day
Sundays are generally free. Sleep in, explore, catch up with friends, relax by the pool or simply reset before another week begins.

    More Than an Internship

Your time in Tanzania is designed to build progressively. You'll begin by settling into your new environment and learning to understand your placement and Tanzanian context before moving more deeply into Global Citizenship, ethical engagement and meaningful contribution.

Participants on the longer Flagship Academy have additional time to develop their placement relationships, explore complex development issues and work collaboratively towards a Legacy Project identified alongside their local partner.

Throughout both programs, you'll share the experience with your Academy cohort — living together, learning together and making the most of Tanzania through social nights, dinners, games, cultural experiences, weekend adventures and plenty of spontaneous moments in between.

Please note: Because these programs follow a structured curriculum and group itinerary, participants must join one of the advertised intake dates rather than selecting individual arrival dates or program durations. Places are limited for each cohort.
