    Om programmet

Malindi is a historic and popular coastal town located in Kilifi County, Kenya, approximately 120 km northeast of Mombasa. Renowned for its Swahili, Arab, and Italian influences—often referred to as "Little Italy"—it boasts stunning white-sand beaches, the Malindi Marine National Park, the 15th-century Vasco da Gama Pillar, and the nearby 12th-century Gede Ruin. The local community primarily revolves around fishing, tourism, and agriculture. Women in Kilifi County encounter significant vulnerabilities stemming from extreme poverty, deeply rooted patriarchal cultural practices, and high incidences of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Around 45% of women aged 15-49 in this area have faced physical or sexual violence; however, through UCESCO and the efforts of volunteers, we are working to empower them to integrate into society, care for their families with dignity, and earn respect within their communities.

This program is perfect for Open-minded and empathetic volunteers who are keen on gender equality and assisting women in enhancing their skills. As you will be volunteering alongside local staff, you don’t need to have experience in HIV/AIDS support, literacy, financial literacy, tailoring, business development, or essential life skills or women’s education. However, it is highly advisable to acquire some knowledge in these fields before your arrival in Kenya. The primary aim of this project is to empower women through income-generating projects, education and skills training. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to take part in outreach and HIV/AIDS education campaigns in the local communities and food programs in schools.

As a volunteer on the Women’s Education project in Malindi, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kenya, you will work closely with centers that support vulnerable women and assist in a range of areas, including counseling, skills training, providing education and childcare. This project is particularly good for those with skills and interests in arts, Farming and craft-making, as well as an interest in supporting women to become self-sufficient. Volunteer duties may include helping with:

    • Farming
    • Sewing and tailoring
    • Candle-making
    • Jewelry creation
    • Courses on finance and small business management

Other activities you can engage in during your leisure time

    • *Marine & Turtle Conservation (Mtwapa)*
Turtle monitoring and nest protection, beach patrols, conservation awareness sessions, and support at rescue centers.

    • Beach Clean-Up (Mombasa, Mtwapa & Kilifi)

Coastal clean-up activities, waste audits, community involvement initiatives, and marine pollution awareness campaigns.

    • Ecofarm & Ecotourism (Kilifi)

Kitchen gardening, small-scale organic farming, eco-learning farm tours, and training for sustainable livelihoods.

    • Teaching  (Mombasa & Kilifi)

Classroom assistance, literacy and numeracy sessions, mentorship initiatives, and extracurricular activities.

    • Mangrove Conservation & Restoration (Kilifi & Mombasa)

Mangrove nursery operations, seedling planting, site restoration efforts, and community conservation education.

    • Education Support (Mombasa & Kilifi)

School visits, provision of learning materials, student mentorship, career guidance, and educational awareness programs.

As you get ready to embark on your volunteer journey, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the following essential guidelines.
    1. Kenyan Currency, Mobile Phones, and Internet Access
    • Having a mobile phone will enable you to stay in touch with your family and friends. Local SIM cards are available, with Safaricom being the predominant provider. A SIM card can be purchased for approximately 1 US Dollar, offering competitive rates. The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling, and you can exchange money at malls or withdraw cash from ATMs. U.S. dollars are accepted for entrance fees at National Parks.
    • Acquiring a local SIM card enables you to access M-Pesa, a popular and user-friendly mobile payment platform in Kenya. This facilitates seamless transactions, whether in markets, for transport fares, or even in remote villages across Kenya, eliminating the need to carry cash. This is particularly beneficial as taxi drivers often claim they lack change and may retain excess amounts. With M-Pesa, you can pay the exact fare required, unless you choose to provide a tip. Additionally, you can top up your M-Pesa account using services such as Wise.
    • Internet access is available via Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, and public areas such as cafes and shopping centers. Alternatively, modem sticks for laptops can be purchased for additional connectivity options.
    2. Packing Essentials (Required items):
    • eTA-Visa, which can be obtained via this link (https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de/evisa)
    • Passport (ensure it is valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry),
    • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate,
    • credit card and/or cash,
    • power adapter for local outlets.
    • Recommended items: personal toiletries, travel pillow, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, durable footwear or shoes suitable for outdoor use, fanny pack, compact power bank, hairdryer, and clothing suitable for the weather (check the forecast before your arrival, as conditions may vary from your departure location). Laundry services are available for an additional fee.
    3. What can you expect on your first day with UCESCO
    • Upon your arrival, a member of the UCESCO team, either Kingsley or another representative, will meet you at the airport, and communication will be facilitated via WhatsApp. Your orientation is scheduled for the first weekday at the UCESCO office located in Tudor, Makupa Roundabout. If you arrive during the weekend, we can arrange a brief city tour or a one- to two-day safari; however, your first visit to the project will occur on Monday. The Mombasa Brunch Manager will introduce you to the organization and its various initiatives, so feel free to ask her any questions you may have. You will have the opportunity to tour the School and other projects, with the day concluding around 2 PM. Following this, you may choose to visit the mall to acquire a SIM card (a passport is required) and set up an M-Pesa account.

    Daily Schedule

Volunteer activities are conducted each morning, followed by a range of optional afternoon activities, including sports, traditional Kenyan dance classes, and cooking lessons. Participation in these activities is contingent upon the interest of the volunteers. Most volunteers prefer short tours around the city  (Museums and parks), visiting malls, open-air markets (Maasai market), Live bands and local clubs, nature trekking, and then returning home to relax and prepare for the next day's engagements.

A typical daily schedule may be outlined as follows, with potential minor adjustments:

    • 8:30 a.m. - A nutritious and appetizing breakfast is provided.
    • 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. - Volunteer work as previously detailed.
    • 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Optional afternoon leisure activities as mentioned.
    • 3:30 p.m. - Time to unwind and prepare to return home.
    • 8:00 p.m. - Dinner is served.

    Kenya Safari Animals & Wildlife

    • The wildlife of Kenya serves as the primary draw for tourists exploring Africa, largely due to the remarkable variety of animals and birds that can be observed during a safari, a diversity that is unparalleled in many other countries. With its rich ecosystem, Kenya is home to around 400 species of mammals and an even greater number of bird species, providing an exceptional experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can expect to encounter some of the most iconic safari animals, including the Big Cats, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and many others.
    • Animals are categorized into mammals, featuring the renowned Big Five—lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo—as well as the Big Nine, which includes additional animals that are also highly sought after during safari excursions in Kenya. These include the cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus, and the commonly seen zebra. Many of our volunteers inquire about the best locations in Kenya to view all of the Big Nine. The ideal approach is to explore at least 2 to 3 different parks during your safari, with the Masai Mara National Reserve being one of the few locations where all of the Big Nine can potentially be spotted.

Henting fra flyplassen på Moi International Airport

UCESCO-Kenya a staff member will be there to welcome you when you arrive at Mombasa Airport or from SGR if you are using the train to Mombasa. From the airport,/ railway train station you will travel in our private car to your accommodation. Depending on traffic, this will be a 20-minute drive. Once you are done with the booking process, we share our whatsup number to keep in touch, especially during airport pick-up, it's easy and quick to communicate because there is always a wifi at the airport.

N/B Just to remind you, sometimes luggage delays and we have seen our volunteer having a hard time as they are waiting for their luggage for three days, make sure at least the back bag/ the small bag you will be walking with, has all the basic items, and at least few clothes to change in case you luggage delays, At least make sure you can survive for two to three days but not always luggage delays but it happens. it's just a caution because we have seen volunteer forced to go the the mall to buy a few clothes to survive as they are waiting for their luggage to arrive, which is an unnecessary expense.

    Overnatting

    • All volunteer houses have running water. Volunteers should not drink tap water – instead, drink only bottled water
    • UCESCO- Mombasa arranges accommodation for volunteers in a volunteer house or homestays. Both our homestays and volunteer houses are executive, spacious, beautiful, Well-finished apartments that are fully furnished with en-suite room features and en-suite bathrooms. It's a place you can call home away from home. your stay is guaranteed to be comfortable, and memorable and a comeback is certain. The unit has a furnished living room fitted with armchairs, a flat-screen TV, Free Wifi, and a fully equipped kitchen in case you want to cook your fast food apart from what we provide. Parking facilities are available and the premises are guarded by security personnel 24/7.
    • Both Homestays and volunteer houses are located, in a serene environment with friendly people, and proximity to major Shopping Malls, KFC, GYM, Pizza Inn, coffee cafes, Supermarkets, and Educational Centers. is a great choice for volunteers to rest after hard work in the slums. They are also in a Great location…convenient for public transport to the city and many bars and restaurants nearby.
    • Housekeeping is offered weekly (every Saturday) and change of beddings.

    Mat og drikke

    • Mombasa common Cuisine

Mombasa is a bustling city, rich in history, culture, and amazing Swahili cuisine. Among the top things you should do while visiting the city is try the local foods and snacks.

With Indian and Arabian influences on the Kenyan coast dating back to 800 A.D. prepare your taste buds for an amazing experience. You will experience different flavors, spices, and aromas.

While spicy food is popular, there are non-spicy options for anyone who doesn’t fancy too much heat in their foods or snacks.

      • We provide 2 meals per day because most of the lunchtime you will always find yourself on the project site. You only need to buy some snacks or affordable food near your project site. Sometimes like in school, you can share with the students but it might not be good for your stomach because mostly we use Githeri ( Cooked Maize corn and beans together) which I guess might be difficult for your stomach to digest if you are not used to it.
      • If you have any special dietary requirements e.g. vegetarian or vegan, please let us know so we can make arrangements for you. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but, as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible so you can adapt easily.

    Preparation for Arrival

Engaging in volunteer work in Kenya through our organization promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to connect with new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.
    Transportation
"'Matatus''  is our local name, meaning public transport vehicles which serve as the predominant mode of public transport in Kenya. After spending a few days acclimating to your surroundings, you may wish to explore the local area, visit supermarkets, or access ATMs. Additionally, public transport may be necessary to reach your placement project. During your initial days, a member of the Kenyan team will accompany you until you feel comfortable navigating the routes independently. In Mombasa, minibusses, TUKTUK, and Matatus are widely used and often feature vibrant decorations, including neon lights and sound systems. They are affordable and enjoyable ways to travel. Alternatively, you may choose to utilize the Uber or Bolt applications for taxi services. These platforms are prevalent in Mombasa and are particularly safe for newcomers who may be unfamiliar with local pricing and destinations; thus, using Uber is highly recommended. If you wish to stop somewhere after arriving at the airport before being picked up by our team, consider using the Uber or Bolt app. Relying on Local taxis without knowledge of bargaining may result in inflated fares. When utilizing public transport, whether as a volunteer or a local, be mindful of the potential for pickpocketing due to crowded conditions. It is advisable to avoid carrying valuables or large amounts of cash. For longer journeys, we suggest coordinating travel arrangements with the Kenyan team, who can provide transportation in a private vehicle or van.
