Do you have a group of passionate volunteers ready to experience both the land and marine aspects of the Tropical North Queensland? This environmental education tour is perfect for families and groups of 4-10 participants who want to learn about the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Atherton Tablelands. This program starts the first or second week of each month.
A great opportunity to teach your family about the environment and immerse yourself in tropical north Queensland.
Day 0 – Check into your hotel and try to control your excitement for the next 5 day adventure ahead. Please note: Accommodation IS NOT included in this pricing - please email us for accommodation suggestions or look at the many options in Cairns)
Day 1 – On the first day you’ll find yourself in the ancient Daintree rainforest and Cape Tribulation. Cruise the scenic coastline by 4WD, spot crocodiles on a river cruise, journey through the National Park where you can recharge and refresh with traditional Australian ‘Billy Tea’, damper bread and natural fruity icecream. Don’t forget to stop and take in where the lush rainforest meets the reef. Enjoy swims, beach walks and listening to the natural chorus of the wildlife whilst learning about the complex and ancient rainforest.
Day 2 – You'll embark a 35 metre catamaran for a snorkel on the largest living reef system in the world, the iconic Great Barrier Reef. With your very own marine biologist on board, expect to learn about the inquisitive marine species that live on the reef and colourful corals and how this biodiverse ecosystem interacts and functions. Enjoy a BBQ lunch with a wine and cheese platter to help take it all in.
Day 3 – Swap bathers for walking shoes and venture into the Australian Outback. On this adventure trail you can experience the indigenous culture of Australia and their traditional way of living for centuries in the rugged Australian terrain. Learn about Australian wildlife, go on a unique guided cave tour, visit the ‘Balancing Rock’ - a geological spectacle, lay eyes upon ancient Aboriginal rock art and visit the ruins of the Chilliagoe Smelter.
Day 4 - Another day out at sea, you’ll take a ferry to a tropical island and meet our volunteer research team to help study and protect the Great Barrier Reef. You will learn about the threats to the Barrier Reef and what steps marine conservationists are taking to monitor and respond to risk indicators. By the end of the day, you will know all about coral and be able to identify some of the key marine species.
Day
5 – Rejoin the research team at a new island location where you will learn about Indigenous Australian culture. Learn about some of the threats that sea turtles face in the wild and join the team on their snorkelling surveys to document the wild and free turtles. We will introduce you to some of the local turtles and teach you how to identify one turtle from another. You will come away from today with knowledge of Indigenous Australian culture and ceremony plus have a great understanding of marine turtles and the threats to their survival. Go on a self-guided eco-walk to the Nudeys beach or take the summit track to see a 360 degree view on the Island.
