Sobre o programa

You will be part of our Cádiz crew with the main objective safeguarding and protect the Orca population of the Strait of Gibraltar.

What's the matter?

Beginning in 2020, the Iberian Orca, a subpopulation of Orcas (Orcinus orca), which is critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List (only approx. 40 individuals are left), began interacting with boats and ramming/playing with their rudders in waters off the Iberian Peninsula, in specific in the Strait of Gibraltar, where they follow the seasonal migration of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), their primary food source, staying there mainly from early spring until the end of October. Over 500 reported interactions have been reported from 2020 to 2023. These interactions have led to a huge debate of how to handle this topic and why the animals are doing this. As the Iberian Orca is already facing many challenges such as maritime traffic, noise pollution, chemical pollution, industrial & military effluents and aggressions from local fishermen towards the animals, now they also face aggressions and attacks from recreational boaters.

In August 2023 it has been documented that a recreational boating crew has shot the animals as there were approaching the vessel. WeWhale charged files against the captain and boat owner to set an example that attacks towards those animals cannot be tolerated.

As Orcas are highly intelligent animals, they often transmit behaviors from generation to generation. As efforts has been undertaken to control or stop these interactions, it is expected that the Iberian Orca population will continue to interact with boats in the upcoming years.

As a result of the lately aggressions from many recreational boaters it is expected that the future situation of those animals is highly threatened and in danger. 2024, 2025 and 2026 will be crucial years to guarantee the survival of the Iberian Orca subpopulation.

WeWhale is addressing this topic by having a surveillance campaign in place, both out at sea and on land. 5 days a week our surveillance boat will be out at sea to i) prevent attacks from boaters towards the animals, ii) survey the Iberian Orca population and iii) track and analyze interactions among boats and the Orcas. At the same time our land-based crew will make its observations by surveying the Orca population from strategic locations along the coastline.

In the Safeguarding Iberian Orca conservation project in Cadiz, a wide range of exciting tasks await you. Tasks consist for example of boat preparation, searching for Orcas out at sea and on land, taking pictures, ensuring correct data entry and caption of possible attacks from boaters towards the animals or documenting Orca and boat interactions and create social media content.

Possible daily routine: Your day starts usually at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast or coffee/tea. Around 8:00 a.m. you will be either assigned to go out at sea with the crew of the surveillance boat leaving from the port of Barbate, or head out to our land-based surveillance activities on the coastline in between Cabo de Trafalgar and Zahara de los Atunes. You will have access to our own research application CetaceanX where you need to ensure the right data entry. Once returned to the WeWhale Orca flat, you then start with your work of uploading and analyzing the data collected, pictures/videos taken, and hydrophone sounds recorded. Depending on the daily workload this will be done the next day in the morning. In the following you see a collection of all possible tasks throughout your work with us:

BOAT

The volunteers go out at sea with our crew to learn and collect data about:

1.      Environmental conditions

2.      Survey and surveillance methodologies

3.      Orca sighting and identification

4.      Orca behaviour and possible interaction observations

5.      Orca bioacoustics

DATA ANALYSIS

Volunteers will work from the office (apartment) with a computer to filter and analyze all data collected at sea and on land, Main tasks include: photo ID; filtering and organizing data collected; filtering and classification of visual and acoustic material collected.

LAND BASED SURVEILLANCE

Volunteers will try to identify Orca sightings and spot possible dangers for the animals with the use of a telescope and binoculars from strategic locations along the coastline.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Volunteers will prepare social media material of their conservation work at WeWhale and of animal sightings.

Note: You will be either every day out at sea or every two days, depending on the allocation of sea based and land-based activities (apart from Saturday and Sunday, as both days are our resting days) for 7-8h. So, you should be aware that if you experience seasickness, this program might not be suitable for you.

Vejer de la Frontera and surroundings

Vejer de la Frontera is nominated as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain and situated in the province of Cadiz, 10 minutes away from the famous surf spot El Palmar and 35 minutes away from Cádiz. The area is characterized by its biodiversity in marine life, portfolio of sport activities, outstanding landscapes, and its amazing views to the African continent.  The “coming together “of two major seas/oceans (the Mediterranean and the Atlantic) and two major continents (Europe and Africa) gives this area a very unique identification, and this combined with the cheerful culture of Andalusia.

Your free time in Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz / The Strait of Gibraltar)

Your evenings invite you to visit the numerous restaurants, bars, or cafés in the area or in the town of Vejer. On the weekends you might check out Cadiz, Tarifa or Conil de la Frontera (to name a few ideas) which are all reachable either by car or bus.

The beaches of “Costa de la Luz” are a true paradise for surfers, kite surfers, wind surfers or for persons who like just hanging around the beach enjoying the local vibe. The town of Vejer de la Frontera belongs to white villages of Andalucia and offers plenty of culture, culinary options, and a vibrant bar scene.

Sobre o projecto

Be part of our expedition and conservation team to work with whales and dolphins in Lanzarote or in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Conheça seu anfitrião

WeWhale is the first organization worldwide building a complete noise and emission-free whale observation fleet to create awareness for these majestic animals.

Our project aims to create awareness for cetaceans by doing observation and investigation excursions. Further we do accoustic studies and photo identification reports to get a better understanding of the cetacean populations within our research area. Our guests on board will be informed about whale and dolphin species and the conservation efforts done from our side and everyone could do to protect those majestic animals.

Once on land again we follow up with data gathered out on the sea to convert them into useful infomation to create awareness.

In addition to our whale and dolphin observation excursions, we actively develop dedicated conservation initiatives, such as the Save the Iberian Orca surveillance campaign, which we initiated.

Furthermore we generate data for an application to avoid ship strikes (collisions with cetaceans) and are currently working on the first European whale & dolphin sanctuary to combat the captive whale and dolphin industry.
