    Om programmet

The Northern Welfare Centre in Saraphi, on the edge of Chiang Mai, is run under the Foundation for the Education of Autistic Children and holds the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen. It supports around forty people with autism and intellectual disabilities — about half of them children aged three to eighteen, and half adults over eighteen.

That second half matters. Most disability placements abroad stop at childhood. This one does not, and the adults are working towards independence and paid employment rather than simply being looked after.

    Mornings: developmental classrooms

You assist teachers and caregivers in small groups organised by developmental stage rather than age:

    • Classroom 1 — Early-stage learners, mostly non-verbal, needing patient emotional and behavioural support
    • Classroom 2 — Moderate developmental level; students follow simple instructions and respond well to structured, repeated training
    • Classroom 3 — Advanced learners building vocational skills and taking on real responsibilities around the centre

Which group you work with varies with the day and what the staff need.

    Afternoons: vocational and life skills

A fixed weekly rotation, and you are a participant in it rather than an observer:

    • Monday — Basic computer training
    • Tuesday — Making mask straps
    • Wednesday — Cooking classes
    • Thursday — Candle making and tote bag painting
    • Friday — Swimming, off-site, rotating by classroom

What this work is really like

Slow, repetitive and genuinely rewarding, in that order. Progress is measured in a student finishing a task unprompted, not in dramatic breakthroughs. If you need to see quick results, this is the wrong placement. If you can be patient, consistent and unbothered by behaviour that would faze other people, the staff will use you properly.

You are there to add attention the staff cannot stretch to — one adult per learner instead of one per group. You are not there to run a therapy programme, and no one will ask you to.

    Who it suits

Anyone 18 or over. Especially useful for students and workers in psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, special education, nursing and social work — but no qualification is required, and willingness matters more than a CV. A clean criminal background check is mandatory, at your own cost, and without it you cannot join.

Minimum four weeks. Adults and children with autism rely on routine and familiar faces, so a placement short enough to be disruptive is not offered.

    Typisk dag

Friday — Arrival in Chiang Mai and transfer to the volunteer house.

Saturday and Sunday — Two-day orientation: Thai culture, greetings, how the local transport works, and a half-day city tour, finishing with a cultural welcome dinner and show. You also read through reports written by previous volunteers on the project, which is the fastest way to understand what you are walking into.

Monday — A coordinator takes you out to the centre by local transport, introduces you to the staff, and settles the details: your classroom, your hours, and what the week looks like.

Tuesday to Friday — the working pattern

    • Breakfast at the volunteer house — you cook it yourself from supplies provided
    • Morning — 15–20 minutes out to Saraphi, then classroom support in your assigned developmental group
    • Lunch at the centre, included on weekdays
    • Afternoon — That day's vocational or life-skills session: computers, mask straps, cooking, candle making and painting, or swimming on Friday
    • Evening — Back in the city. Dinner is your own, and Chiang Mai has more good cheap food per square kilometre than almost anywhere

Hours — Around five to six hours a day, five days a week.

Saturday and Sunday — Off. If the centre has a special event on a weekend you are welcome to join, but it is entirely your choice.

The schedule can shift with the placement and with local circumstances. Flexibility is expected.

    Fritidsaktiviteter

Weekends are entirely yours, and Chiang Mai is one of the easiest cities in Asia to spend them in.

In the city — Hundreds of temples, most of them free: Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang inside the old moat, and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep up the mountain for the view back over the valley. The Sunday Walking Street market takes over the old town every week.

Learn something — Thai cookery classes and Thai massage courses run all over the city and are cheap by any standard. Most volunteers do at least one.

Eat — Khao soi is the northern dish worth crossing the city for, and the night markets do the rest.

Weekend tripsPai (762 bends of mountain road, worth every one), Chiang Rai for the White Temple, Lampang, or a cheap flight down to Bangkok. Volunteers on longer placements often take a break in the southern islands or Phuket.

Also in Chiang Mai — The 3D art museum, the Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders, cabaret shows, art galleries and an unreasonable number of cat cafes.

At the volunteer house there is a large living room, air conditioning, laundry and Wi-Fi, and up to thirty other volunteers to plan things with.

Hämtning på flygplatsen på Chiang Mai International Airport

Pickup is included on arrival. The return drop is not.

🚩 Airport pickup runs between 8am and 8pm only. Land outside those hours and there is no one waiting. If your flight arrives late, book a hotel near the airport for the night and the local team will collect you the next morning. Check this before you book your flights.

Arrive on a Friday at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). A coordinator or representative meets you and takes you to the volunteer house.

Already in Chiang Mai? The team will meet you at an agreed point instead.

🚩 The return airport drop is not included and is arranged separately.

Most volunteers reach Chiang Mai on a short domestic connection through Bangkok. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, AirAsia, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Korean Air all serve the route.

    Boende

You stay in one of two volunteer houses in the middle of Chiang Mai, a few minutes apart, which between them hold more than thirty volunteers. The local coordinating office is inside one of them, so the team is genuinely on hand rather than on the end of a phone.

Air-conditioned bedrooms, shared with other volunteers. Apply with a friend or partner and you will be placed in the same house and dorm, subject to the male/female dorm arrangement.

    Facilities:

    • Wireless internet throughout
    • Two fully equipped kitchens
    • A large living room for films and downtime
    • Washing machine for laundry
    • Toilets and showers

Restaurants, cafes, convenience stores and laundry services are all within a short walk. The old city, the night markets and the temples are on your doorstep rather than a taxi ride away — the location is the best thing about the house.

Private room upgrades are sometimes available for an extra fee. Ask before you travel; they are not guaranteed.

    Mat och Dryck

Two meals a day are included. Dinner is not.

Breakfast — All the ingredients are provided at the volunteer house and you cook your own: bread, butter, eggs, coffee, tea and fruit.

Lunch — Taken at the centre on weekdays and included.

Dinner — Your own cost, and genuinely no hardship: Chiang Mai has some of the best cheap food in Asia, and volunteers almost always go out together. Budget a few dollars a meal.

Weekends — Both lunch and dinner are at your own cost.

Vegetarian and other dietary requirements — Tell the local team, and put it on your application form. Thai food is easy to adapt, but they need to know in advance.

    Detaljer vid ankomsten

Arrival is a Friday, at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX).

🚩 Airport pickup runs between 8am and 8pm only. If your flight lands outside that window, book a hotel near the airport for the night and the local team will collect you the following morning. Check your arrival time before you book, not after.

🚩 The return airport drop is not included.

🚩 Daily transport to the project is not included — the centre is a 15–20 minute ride from the volunteer house and costs about US$2 a day. Small, but budget for it across a long placement.

Already in Chiang Mai? The team will meet you at an agreed point instead of the airport.

Documents — A clean criminal background check, a CV and a copy of your passport, all before you travel. You pay for the background check yourself, and without it the placement cannot go ahead.

Visa — Most nationalities get 30 days visa-free on arrival; a 60-day tourist visa can be obtained in advance, and a 90-day non-immigrant visa is possible but slow and paperwork-heavy. Placements longer than your visa allows need planning before you fly — ask us. If you leave Thailand mid-placement, re-entry and any new visa are your responsibility.

What to bring — Lightweight clothes and rainwear, walking shoes, sandals, and a light jacket or jumper: evenings between November and February get properly cool.

Health — Hepatitis A and B and typhoid are the usual recommendations. See a travel clinic before you go.

Insurance — Travel and medical insurance is mandatory.

When to come — Weekly Friday starts, year-round. July and August are the busiest, which is when you will meet the most other volunteers. November to February is the coolest and driest stretch, and the most comfortable to work in.
