    Why English, and why here

English has become the language that opens doors in Morocco – to higher education, to international work, and to a job market that increasingly expects it. French still dominates formal education, but English is what students and young professionals are actively seeking out. What is in short supply is people to practise with.

    Who you will teach

Volunteers are placed in local schools, community centres and educational institutions around Rabat, and the range of learners is wider than most teaching placements:

    • Children in primary and community settings
    • Teenagers preparing for exams and further study
    • Adults improving their English for work – often the most driven group in the building

The teaching itself covers speaking, listening, reading and writing in an interactive, supportive environment. Beyond formal lessons you may help with exam preparation, homework support and informal conversation practice, which for many learners is the part that actually shifts their fluency. During school holidays there may be the chance to teach at summer camps.

You will usually work alongside Moroccan teachers or with other international volunteers, which makes for a livelier classroom than working alone.

    No qualification needed

No formal teaching qualification is required. The local team provides orientation, guidance and teaching resources. That said, volunteers who do a basic online TEFL-style course before arriving get more out of the placement and are more use from day one – if you have the time before you travel, it is worth doing.

    Living with a Moroccan family

Accommodation is with a host family, with three meals a day included. Most volunteers report that this, rather than the classroom, is where they learn the most about Morocco – and it is the reason a placement here feels different from one where you live in a volunteer house with other foreigners.

    Teaching

Your timetable depends on the placement. School classes run in the morning; community centre and adult classes are often later in the day. You will be assisting a Moroccan teacher, taking small groups, or leading your own sessions depending on your confidence and how long you have been there.

Interactive works better than formal here. Games, role play, songs with younger children, and conversation-driven sessions with adults. Volunteers who bring flashcards, picture books or simple activity materials from home find them used every day.

    Afternoon and evening

Back with the host family for lunch, which in Morocco is the main meal of the day and worth being there for. Afternoons may hold a second session, homework support or preparation time.

Evenings are family time, or the medina, or a cafe on the Kasbah walls watching the sun go down over the Atlantic.

    Weekends

Free. Rabat is well placed – Casablanca is an hour by train, Fes and Marrakech are both doable, and Chefchaouen, Meknes and the coast at Essaouira are all within reach.

    Fritidsaktiviteter

You work weekdays, so evenings and every weekend are yours - and Rabat is one of the better-placed bases in Morocco for using them.

    Rabat itself

The Kasbah of the Udayas, a blue-and-white walled quarter above the river mouth, is the obvious first afternoon, and the cafe on the walls looking out over the Atlantic is where everyone ends up. The Chellah is a Roman city that later became a medieval necropolis, now full of storks. The Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the medina for shopping, round out the city. Rabat is a UNESCO World Heritage site and considerably calmer than Marrakech or Fes, which makes it an easy place to live.

    Weekend trips

Casablanca is an hour by train, with the Hassan II Mosque - one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims - worth the trip alone. Fes has the oldest and most overwhelming medina in the country. Chefchaouen, the blue town in the Rif mountains, is the photograph everyone comes back with. Marrakech is further but very doable on the train, and Essaouira on the Atlantic is the calmer coastal alternative.

    Further afield

The Sahara - Merzouga or Zagora - needs a long weekend and an overnight, but a night in the dunes is the trip most volunteers say they would not have missed. The Atlas Mountains and the Toubkal trekking routes are reachable from Marrakech.

    Day to day

Mint tea, hammams, and learning to haggle properly in the souk. Your host family will teach you more about all three than any guidebook.

    Boende

You live with a Moroccan host family in Rabat, which is the single biggest difference between this placement and one where you share a volunteer house with other foreigners. You eat with the family, you are drawn into their routine, and your Arabic or French improves whether you intend it to or not.

Rooms are simple and clean. Families hosting our volunteers have done so for years and are used to guests who arrive with no Arabic and no idea how to eat a tagine properly.

Some volunteers find the first few days an adjustment – Moroccan family life is more communal than many people are used to, and privacy works differently. Almost everyone says by week two it is their favourite part of the programme.

The local team is in Rabat and available throughout your stay if anything needs sorting out.

    Mat och Dryck

Three meals a day are included, eaten with your host family. Moroccan home cooking is genuinely one of the best reasons to come: tagines, couscous on Fridays, harira soup, fresh bread with every meal, olives, and mint tea at all hours.

Lunch is the main meal of the day and the family will usually eat together – try to be there for it rather than working through, since it is where a lot of the conversation happens.

Vegetarians are straightforward to accommodate; Moroccan cooking is full of vegetable and pulse dishes. Note any dietary requirements on your application form so the family can be briefed in advance. Tap water is generally safe in Rabat but most people drink bottled.

Ramadan: if your stay falls during Ramadan, meal timings shift completely and the household eats before dawn and after sunset. It is a remarkable time to be in Morocco, but worth knowing about before you book.

    Detaljer vid ankomsten

    Start dates: weekly, year-round.

Airport: Rabat-Salé (RBA) is closest. Many volunteers fly into Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN) instead, which has far more international routes and is about an hour from Rabat by train – the train runs frequently from the airport terminal itself and is straightforward.

Please note: airport pickup is not included on the Morocco programmes. The team will send you clear directions to your host family before you travel, and can advise on transfers, but budget for getting from the airport yourself. This differs from most of our other destinations, so plan for it.

Visa: most nationalities enter Morocco visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days. Visa and visa extension fees are not included if your nationality does require one, or if you stay beyond the permitted period.

What to expect: Morocco is a Muslim country and Rabat is relatively relaxed, but dressing modestly – shoulders and knees covered – will make your placement and daily life considerably easier, particularly for women.

Ramadan: if your dates fall during Ramadan, the rhythm of the day changes significantly and some placements run reduced hours. Worth factoring into when you come.
