Assist the teacher during classes and teach english, arts and math yourself. Play outdoor games with the kids and do sports with them.
About the project
The elementary schools where you can realize your volunteer work provide eduaction for children from 5 to 12 years. Some schools also receive younger children in a kindergarten or pre-kindergarten. Depending on the school there could be between 100 and 650 children.
You are free to decide ever if you want to volunteer part time or full time, because the schools are flexible with their work schedules. Neither you need special skills nor professional educational background. But you will need a lot a patience, willing to work independently and proactive, showing your creativity and ideas.
Children are taught the regular school subjects like science, math, and geography. Lessons in arts, music, computing and physical education are also offered. Even English is taught as their foreign language class.
Generally the children at the schools are from low-income families. The schools are financed by a annual budged from the government, so that parents only have to pay for some school materials and a low tuition fee.
Your work tasks
As a volunteer in one of our schools you may carry out the following tasks and responsibilities:
Volunteers are very welcome and encouraged to be creative. Bring in your personal skills, new ideas and suggetions. They are always welcome and can be discussed with your in-country volunteer coordinator.
As you will be living in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, there are a lot of options for free-time activities.
You can enjoy the city with its restaurants, bars and pubs or travel to the atlantic or pacific coast on weekends to relax on the beach.
Our transport service will pick you up at the airport in San José and drive you to your guest family.
Living with a local family is a great way to practice your Spanish and to really get to know a country, its society and way of life. This is the reason why we place our volunteers with Costa Rican guest families. You will stay in a single room at the families home. The bathroom is usually shared with other family members, like the common areas of the house.
The guest family will provide you half-board (breakfast and dinner)
