The project
Being one of the top most commonly spoken language in the world, spoken English has a huge role to play when it comes to making a career. This becomes all the more important in places and for people for whom employment opportunities are limited.
To work at the industries in the town areas, English language and basic computer skills proficiency is a significant requirement. But in Cambodia the opportunity to learn and study is not available for everybody, especially, those from poor and underprivileged family backgrounds. As a result many people remain either jobless or have to struggle with an unskilled labour job profile.
The Teaching English Volunteer Program, as the name suggests, is an effort to improve and strengthen the language skills of children from poor family backgrounds, and help them carve a better career for themselves in the future.
Volunteer work
Usually volunteers work alongside the staff English teachers, sometimes monks, or even lead the classes in improving the pronunciation and conversational skills. Volunteers are welcome to bring in their own ideas to the classroom as well to make it more engaging and fun to study. A typical list of tasks of volunteer working for the teaching English program in Cambodia includes;
The schedule for the volunteers remains as follows;
Sunday: Arrival at the program destination
Monday: Orientation + welcome Dinner. Orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, covering topic areas; such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behaviour, food, and other suggestion over things to do in Cambodia.
Tuesday: A full guided city tour of Phnom Penh covering some of the best hot-spots
Wed to Friday: Volunteer work
Weekends - Free to explore the city
The same volunteer work schedule continues from the second week onward
Your weekends and evenings will be free for you to indulge in some sightseeing and explore in and around Phnom Penh. You can visit the temples of Angkor near Siem Reap city in the west, the beaches of Sihanoukville and coastal towns along the southern coast and also the jungle villages along the countryside. (Of course, one just can’t afford to miss visiting the ruins of Angkor Wat when in Cambodia!)
The total fee includes;
Volunteers are picked up from the Phnom Penh International Airport by the local coordinator or representative. Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in Cambodia will be picked up from the bus station or at a meeting point decided beforehand.
Volunteers are provided with an option to live with a host family or in volunteer house. You can let us know about your preference and requirements in the application form and we will try our best to accommodate your needs.
Staying with a local host family is exciting and a very good opportunity for the volunteers to get to know the traditional customs, culture and ‘way of living’ of Cambodians. Our volunteers usually stay with middle class families. All volunteers are provided with separate rooms in most cases. However, in a rare case you would be sharing the room with a fellow volunteer. All host families are carefully selected and approved by the local staff and have past experience of hosting international volunteers. All accommodations have running water and electricity available.
The Volunteer house accommodation is centrally located and close to most of the popular tourist sites in Phnom Penh.Volunteers share a room with other volunteers. The house is a great place to meet and interact with other like minded volunteers from different parts of the world. Internet facility is available for volunteers use and laundry facility is also available at extra cost.
Three meals per day are provided to the volunteers. Lunch and dinner will be rice, a bowl of soup, fried meat (chicken, beef. pork or fish) and a lot of vegetables. Breakfast usually comprises of Tea, Bread, Coffee, Jam and fruits.
