    Über das Programm

Reef Buddy Philippines is a marine conservation programme based in Dauin, Negros Oriental, one of the world's premier reef and muck diving destinations and the heart of the Coral Triangle.

Volunteers join our active Reef Check survey team, running the same globally standardised protocol used in peer-reviewed reef research worldwide. Survey data is submitted directly to the Reef Check Foundation database, where it is used by marine park managers, national governments and UN agencies to track reef health over time.

    Our four research workstreams:

Reef Monitoring: Fish, invertebrate and substrate surveys following Reef Check methodology, plus 3D photogrammetric reef mapping to track changes over time.

Coral Nursery Restoration: Fragment collection, nursery maintenance and coral transplanting to degraded reef areas directly outside Sierra Resort.

BRUVS Apex Predator Monitoring: Baited remote underwater video system deployments to monitor sharks and rays in Dauin waters.

Invasive Species Management: Crown-of-Thorns starfish monitoring and removal using Caribbean-proven methodology.

The programme runs year-round with a 2-week minimum stay. Volunteers new to diving complete PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water training in week one before joining project work. Experienced divers can join survey dives from day one.

Reef Buddy Philippines is the Southeast Asian sister operation of Caribbean Reef Buddy, established in Carriacou, Grenada in 2014. Across both sites we have worked with 300 volunteers from 28 nationalities

    Tagesablauf

Your day starts with breakfast at Sierra Resort at 07:30 before heading over to The Dive Hub for the morning session at 08:30. Most mornings you'll be in the water, whether that's a reef survey, coral nursery dive or a BRUVS deployment, depending on where we are in the four-week project cycle. Survey dives follow Reef Check protocol with three buddy teams working the transect simultaneously, so you'll quickly find your feet on fish, invertebrate or substrate depending on where you're needed.

Back on dry land, lunch is at Sierra Resort at 13:00. The afternoon session from 14:00 is where the morning's data gets processed. That means entering survey results, working through species ID, and contributing to the dataset that goes to Reef Check Foundation. It's also where a lot of the real learning happens, because you're cross-referencing what you saw underwater against the protocol and building your identification skills fast.

Dinner is at 18:30 at the resort. Saturday evenings we usually head into Dauin or Dumaguete as a group, at your own cost, which is a good chance to see a bit more of Negros Oriental beyond the dive site.

Free time and Sundays are your own. Apo Island, Siquijor, the hot springs at Mambukal and the waterfalls around Mount Talinis are all within reach.

    Freizeitaktivitäten

Dauin is a small coastal town with a lot going on around it, and weekends plus free afternoons are genuinely worth using well.

The most obvious day trip is Apo Island, about 45 minutes by banka boat. It's one of the best-managed marine protected areas in the Philippines and the turtle encounters there are something else.

Dumaguete itself is a university city with a genuinely good food scene for somewhere its size. Rizal Boulevard along the waterfront is worth an evening. The markets around the public plaza are good for fresh produce and local snacks, and there are a few excellent seafood restaurants if you know where to look.

For something more active, the waterfalls and volcanic landscape around Mount Talinis are right on the doorstep. Casaroro Falls is the most visited and worth the hike in. The Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao are quieter and the birdwatching up there is excellent if that's your thing. The hot springs at Mambukal are about an hour away and a solid option for a rest day.

If you want to stay closer to base, Dauin's beach and marine sanctuary areas are right there. The muck diving here is some of the best in the world and there's no shortage of things to find on a casual afternoon dive if you want more time in the water outside the programme.

Habal-habal motorbikes and tricycles are the standard way to get around locally and are cheap and easy to flag down. For longer trips, vans run regularly between Dauin and Dumaguete

    Informationen zur Anreise

Reef Buddy Philippines runs year-round with a 2-week minimum stay and flexible start dates. You don't need to arrive at a fixed point in a rolling schedule to get the most out of it.

If you're new to diving or not yet Advanced Open Water certified, we ask that you join us at the start of a Training Week, which runs every four weeks. Your first week covers PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water, getting you ready to join the survey team from week two onwards.

If you're already Advanced Open Water certified with logged dives, you can start at any point in the cycle and get straight into project work.

For those staying longer, Emergency First Aid and Rescue Diver training becomes available from week five, and the full Research Divemaster pathway is open to volunteers staying eight weeks or more.

Get in touch before you book and we'll work out the best start date for you based on where we are in the project cycle and what you're hoping to get out of the placement.
