Highlights

  • Assist the local mothers who run these kindergartens - trained as "promoters" and monitored by professional educators, they are the backbone of preschool education in rural Cusco.
  • Give one-to-one attention to 3 to 5 year olds in classrooms holding 30 to 40 children, where individual help is otherwise impossible.
  • Work on real monthly targets in language, early maths and social skills, set by the promoters and tracked properly rather than invented for volunteers.

  • Bring patience above all. This is cutting, gluing, drawing, checking homework and serving break-time meals, not running your own lesson plan.

    Über das Programm

Assist the local mothers who run rural kindergartens outside Cusco, giving 3 to 5 year olds the one-to-one attention a class of 40 makes impossible.

    Über das Programm

The kindergartens in the rural communities around Cusco do not look like the ones you grew up with. There is no smartboard, the furniture is old, teaching materials are scarce, and a single classroom regularly holds thirty to forty children between the ages of three and five.

What they do have is the promoters. These kindergartens are run largely by local mothers — known as promotoras or "entertainers" — who take basic training, get regular monitoring from professional educators, and hold the whole thing together. They are not a stopgap. In these communities they are early years education, and they work to genuine monthly targets covering language, early numeracy and social interaction.

Your job is to make those targets reachable. One adult cannot give forty three-year-olds individual attention. Two can start to.

What the work actually looks like

Practical and unglamorous, mostly. Cutting, gluing and drawing alongside the children. Helping with spelling, counting and following simple directions. Checking homework and marking simple tests. Handing out meals at break. Setting up the next day's activities, cleaning the classroom and decorating it. You are assisting the promoter, following her plan, in her room.

This is worth being blunt about, because volunteers who arrive expecting to design and deliver their own curriculum are disappointed, and the children are the ones who pay for that disappointment. The volunteers who do well here are the ones who take direction cheerfully and keep showing up.

Spanish, and why it helps more than it strictly matters

Spanish is not required, and plenty of volunteers arrive with none. But this is a Spanish-speaking classroom of small children, and beginner to intermediate Spanish changes the placement completely — it is the difference between helping and being helped. If you have a few weeks before departure, spend them on the basics. Many volunteers take lessons in Cusco alongside the placement.

    A note on altitude

Cusco sits at roughly 3,400 metres. Altitude affects most people for the first day or two and a few people considerably more. Arrive with a light first couple of days planned, drink more water than feels necessary, and do not book Rainbow Mountain for your first weekend.

    Who this suits

Anyone 17 or over who genuinely likes small children and can hold their patience in a loud, crowded, under-resourced room. A clean criminal background check is required from every volunteer. Volunteer World applies a four-week minimum to placements involving children, which we think is right — the children get consistency rather than a stream of new faces.

Sunday — Arrival in Cusco. You are met at Alejandro Velasco Astete airport (CUZ) by the local coordinator, who will be holding a VolSol sign with your name on it, and taken to your host family. If you are already in Peru and coming overland, pickup is arranged at a meeting point or the bus station instead.

Monday — Orientation with the local team: culture and greetings, safety, getting around Cusco, Spanish basics, and an introduction to your placement. This is also the day your body starts arguing with the altitude, so the pace is deliberately gentle.

Tuesday to Friday — the working pattern:

    • 07:00–08:00 — Breakfast with your host family
    • Morning — At the kindergarten with the promoter and the children
    • 13:00–14:00 — Lunch back at the house
    • Afternoon — Free most days. Volunteers use it for Spanish lessons, exploring the city, or preparing materials for the next morning
    • 19:00–20:00 — Dinner with the host family

Weekends — Yours. The Sacred Valley is on the doorstep, Machu Picchu is the obvious trip, and Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake and the Maras salt pans are all within a weekend. In the city itself the Plaza de Armas, San Pedro market and San Blas are worth days rather than hours.

The same pattern runs from the second week onward. Kindergarten hours shift around Peruvian public holidays and school breaks, and the local team will tell you well in advance.

Cusco is one of the great places to have a free afternoon. The placement finishes around lunchtime, so most days you have the rest of the day, and volunteers use it well: Spanish lessons, wandering San Pedro market, sitting in the Plaza de Armas, or climbing up to San Blas for the view back over the terracotta roofs.

Weekends are the real prize. Machu Picchu is the trip everyone comes for and is worth every bit of the logistics — book the permit ahead, because daily numbers are capped. Beyond it, the Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, the Maras salt pans and Moray are all doable in a weekend. Save the highest of those until you have acclimatised.

Volunteers usually travel in groups put together over dinner with the host family, which is one of the quiet advantages of the homestay arrangement.

    Andere Fähigkeiten

Patience with very young children matters more than anything on a CV. Experience in early years, teaching, childminding, art, music or sport all helps, and so does any Spanish at all - even beginner level changes how much use you can be in the classroom. You will be assisting the local promoter and following her plan rather than running your own, so come ready to take direction. A clean criminal background check is required.

Most nationalities enter Peru visa-free as a tourist, so there is usually no visa cost — check your own country's position before booking.

The price shown already includes your application fee – there is nothing further to pay us on arrival. Payment can be split into interest-free instalments, with the balance due 45 days before you start.

Abholung vom Flughafen Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport

Arrival pickup from Cusco is included. Land at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) and the local coordinator or a representative will be waiting at the terminal door holding a VolSol sign with your name on it, then take you to your host family.

If you are already in Peru or arriving overland — plenty of volunteers come up by bus from Lima or Arequipa, or across from Bolivia — tell the team in advance and they will arrange to meet you at the bus station or another agreed point instead.

Give the team your flight or bus details before you travel. If plans change en route, message them; somebody is on call.

    Unterkunft

You live with a Peruvian host family in Cusco, sharing a room with one or more other volunteers. This is not a hostel with a family attached — you eat with them, you are in their house, and for most volunteers it turns out to be the part of the trip they talk about afterwards.

The houses are clean and comfortable. Most have two bathrooms with hot showers, and many have Wi-Fi and cable TV. Bedding is provided. Cusco gets genuinely cold at night for much of the year, because of the altitude rather than the latitude, so bring warm layers regardless of the season.

Placements are a manageable distance from the houses, and the local team shows you the routes and the safe ways to travel during orientation.

If you would rather have your own room, ask — private upgrades are usually possible at extra cost.

    Verpflegung

Three home-cooked meals a day, Monday to Friday, eaten with your host family.

Peruvian home cooking is a real reason to take the homestay seriously. Expect soups to start, then rice, potatoes in more varieties than you knew existed, fresh salads, juices and a dessert. The menu changes daily.

Weekends are not included, and this is deliberate rather than an oversight — most volunteers are away travelling on Saturday and Sunday. Budget for eating out at weekends. Cusco is well supplied with cheap and good places to eat, from the San Pedro market stalls upward.

Tell the team about allergies or dietary requirements before you arrive and they will match you to a family who can cook around them. Vegetarians are straightforward; strict vegans should flag it early.

    Informationen zur Anreise

Start dates — Weekly and year-round, with arrival on a Sunday.

Getting there — Fly to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco (CUZ). Almost all international routes connect through Lima (LIM), and the Lima–Cusco hop is about 90 minutes. Some volunteers spend a night or two in Lima first, which is a good idea for a different reason: it breaks the altitude jump.

Transfers — Arrival pickup from Cusco airport is included. If you are travelling overland or are already in Peru, tell the team and they will arrange a pickup point or meet you at the bus station.

Altitude — Cusco is at about 3,400 metres and this catches people out. Expect to feel breathless and possibly headachy for a day or two. Take the first days slowly, drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol, and save the high-altitude day trips for your second weekend. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should speak to a doctor before booking.

Visa — Most nationalities enter Peru visa-free as tourists for up to 183 days. Check your own country's position before you travel.

Background check — A clean criminal background check is required from every volunteer. Start the check early; it takes weeks in some countries.

When to come — The dry season, roughly May to September, has the clearest skies and the coldest nights. The wet season, November to March, is greener, quieter and cheaper, with rain most afternoons. The kindergartens run year-round either way.
