Eco-Agriculture volunteers work in a farming community at the base of a volcano in the Guatemalan highlands. The coffee co-operative there was set up with the help of a non-profit organization focused on economic development and sustainable agriculture in Guatemala. All coffee is organic, shade grown, hand processed, and sun-dried.
Volunteers at the coffee co-operative may be asked to:
Volunteers' roles may vary depending on seasonal needs, as well as their skills and abilities. The coffee harvesting season is from December until early March, but there is plenty of work year round. Participants are always supported by Maximo Nivel’s in-country coordinators but they are not on site at your project every day.
Working hours vary according to the needs of the project, but volunteers can expect to work 4-6 hours per day, Monday to Friday, in the morning or in the afternoon.
Our fees include:
Airport pick up in Guatemala City is included. Volunteers find our representative outside the airport bringing a yellow flag with a smiley face on it.
Volunteers stay in a local Guatemalan family with a shared room and breakfast and dinner included.
Breakfast and dinner are included 7 days a week.
Every Monday, all year round. The Eco-Agriculture project is located just outside La Antigua. Travel time varies from day to day, but participants can expect to spend 15-30 minutes traveling each way, by either walking or using local buses, taxis or a “tuk-tuk” (3-wheeled motorcycle taxi). For the first visit to the project, volunteers are taken by a Maximo Nivel representative using the local transport and given additional information about what transport to take. Local bus rides are very affordable and a one way trip will rarely cost more than Q8 (about $1). Taxis & tuk-tuks cost approximately Q10 to Q30 (about US$1.20 to US$3.50) one way within Antigua.
