    Om programmet

Our program is important because experienced equestrians help train local Namibian workers in horse riding, care, and management, creating valuable skills and job opportunities. Many locals have little to no knowledge of respectful horse care, and it is common to see horses that are injured or undernourished. Horses are also a vital mode of transport between farms and surrounding areas, making proper training and care essential.

    About the Program
The program focuses on training horses in ways that benefit both the animals and local workers seeking employment. Volunteers assist in the daily care, riding, and training of horses alongside Namibian farmworkers. The farm has approximately sixty horses, including stallions, mares, mares with foals, and geldings. Typically, around eight horses are brought into the stables at a time for structured training.

Training takes place in our open-air arena and round pen for groundwork, but volunteers are welcome to ride throughout the farm. Participants engage in the full process of horse ownership and breeding—from weaning foals and halter-training young horses to riding more experienced horses that need additional attention. Trained horses may be prepared for sale to the Namibian equestrian industry or used for farm work. Foaling season generally runs from November to April, and weaning occurs between June and November. Farm-use horses are involved in moving cattle, inspecting grazing areas, managing water points, and anti-poaching patrols.

    Locations
The program operates at two locations:

    1. Hochfeld – A traditional farm setting where most horse training and cattle work takes place, offering volunteers a hands-on, immersive experience in Namibian rural life.

    2. Losberg, near the airport – A convenient location close to Windhoek’s international airport, providing easy access for volunteers and serving as the main base for accommodation, orientation, and farm operations.

Volunteers stay at the on-site guesthouse near the Losberg farm, just 450 metres (0.2 miles) from the main farm house. This setup offers safety, comfort, and close access to daily farm activities while supporting local employment.

    What We Expect
Volunteers are expected to work respectfully with horses, tack, and farm equipment, and show care for the environment, animals, and guesthouse accommodation.

    What You Can Expect
Volunteers experience authentic Namibian farm life, including friendly family gatherings, breathtaking sunsets, and evenings around an outdoor fire under a star-filled sky, accompanied by the sounds of Namibian wildlife such as jackals.

    What to Bring

    • Horse-riding helmet and boots

    • Horse-riding clothes

    • Comfortable daily clothes

    • Sunscreen and insect repellent

This program offers a unique opportunity to gain practical equestrian skills, contribute to sustainable farm practices, and help build local knowledge and job opportunities in Namibia.

    Typisk dag

A typical day on the farm begins at 07:30 with feeding the stabled horses. Breakfast is served around 08:00, or before 07:30 for early risers.

Horse work starts at approximately 08:30 and continues until 12:30, combining groundwork and riding. Horses are trained to be ridden on the bit and handled by different riders with varied styles, ensuring they are adaptable and well-prepared. These horses are primarily destined for safaris or the Namibian jumping and dressage industry.

Lunch break is from 12:30 to 14:00, giving volunteers time to rest and recharge. Work resumes in the afternoon at 14:00 (or 14:30 during summertime) and continues until 17:30. Evening activities include grooming, cooling down horses, and stable care as needed.

A light dinner is served around 19:30, offering a chance to relax, reflect on the day, and enjoy the farm atmosphere.

Volunteers may stay one week or longer at each farm location, allowing a deeper experience of daily routines, horse training, and interaction with both local staff and horses. This schedule provides a structured yet hands-on learning environment while fully immersing volunteers in Namibian farm life.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Hosea Kutako International Airport

We provide personal airport pickup for all confirmed volunteers. Upon arrival in Namibia, you will be collected directly from the airport by a member of our team. This ensures a safe, reliable, and stress-free transfer to the farm.

Flight details must be shared with us in advance so that we can schedule your pickup accordingly. We monitor arrival times to accommodate possible delays and ensure smooth coordination.

The drive to the farm offers your first glimpse of Namibia’s open landscapes and rural surroundings. Depending on which farm you are staying at first (Hochfeld or Losberg), travel time may vary. Both locations are easily accessible by road.

Because we arrange pickup ourselves, there is no need to organize taxis or buses. This allows volunteers to feel secure and welcomed from the moment they land.

Return transfers to the airport at the end of your stay can also be arranged in coordination with your departure flight time.

    Indkvartering

Volunteers stay in comfortable double rooms, each furnished with two three-quarter beds. Every room has its own ensuite bathroom, providing privacy and convenience.

The villa offers a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where volunteers can rest and recharge after a full day of farm work, while still enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the Namibian countryside.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Volunteers receive three balanced meals daily, prepared to support an active farm lifestyle. Meals are wholesome, home-style, and designed to provide the energy needed for physical outdoor work.

Tap water is available at all times and is safe to drink. Coffee is included with breakfast, and fresh fruit is provided when available.

All other drinks outside of breakfast coffee are not included. Additional coffee, soft drinks, specialty beverages, and snacks are excluded from the program fee.

Snacks such as chips, crisps, chocolates, and sweets are available for purchase. Volunteers are also welcome to bring personal snacks if desired.

    Oplysninger ved ankomst

Volunteers are welcome to join the program throughout the year. While there are no strict start dates, it is preferable to arrive on a Sunday or Monday, ideally in the morning.

Upon arrival, volunteers are taken to their accommodation and given a guided tour of the farm, including stables, training areas, and the workspace. This allows time to settle in, unpack, and familiarize themselves with the farm environment. Practical work begins the day after arrival.

Flights can be booked on any day of the week, but early morning arrivals are recommended, as the farm is several hours’ drive from the airport. This ensures volunteers have enough time to reach the farm, settle in, and prepare for the first full day of hands-on farm work.
