    About Felidae Wildlife Centre

Nestled on the border of the Free State and Northern Cape in South Africa, Felidae Centre is home to over 60 animals from more than 10 different African species—ranging from small carnivores to majestic big cats. Our story began in 2010 with the rescue of a single cheetah and a caracal, and today, Felidae has grown into a safe haven for wild animals in need.

We are more than just a sanctuary. We offer lifelong care to animals that have been abused, injured, orphaned, or are unable to be released back into the wild. Here, they are given a second chance—free from exploitation, surrounded by nature, and able to live out their days in peace.

Our goal is to recreate a natural environment for each species, allowing them to retain their wild instincts even in captivity. When an animal is brought to Felidae, it undergoes a full medical assessment. If suitable for release, human contact is kept to a minimum, giving the animal the best chance to return to the wild.

Over the years, we’ve successfully released caracals, jackals, meerkats, Cape genets, African wildcats, striped polecats, and more. We are firmly against canned hunting and have proudly rescued 12 lions from this cruel industry. Today, these lions roam large, natural enclosures where they can hunt and live as freely as possible.

    Volunteer With Purpose

As a volunteer, you’ll become an essential part of our daily operations, contributing directly to the care, enrichment, and rehabilitation of the animals. Tasks include:

    • Preparing and distributing food (including meat preparation for big cats—expect to handle organs, carcasses, and raw meat)
    • Daily cleaning and maintenance of enclosures (refreshing water, removing bones, cleaning shelters, etc.)
    • Animal observation and behavior monitoring
    • Building and installing enrichment items to encourage natural behaviors
    • Assisting in the construction of enclosures and shelters
    • Helping with fundraising and educational tours
    • General farm maintenance: fencing, roads, painting, and repairs
    • Supporting the vet during medical checkups or treatments (as needed)

No two days are the same at Felidae. Working with wildlife requires flexibility, a positive attitude, and a willingness to adapt to the animals’ needs.

You’ll stay in the heart of the sanctuary, where your nights are filled with the unforgettable sounds of lions roaring and jackals calling under the stars.

Bring sturdy clothes, closed shoes, work gloves—and don’t forget your camera! You’ll get incredibly close to these beautiful animals, making memories (and photos) to last a lifetime.

    Oplysninger ved ankomst

Felidae is open 365 days a year, as the animals require daily care and attention—so you’re welcome to join us at any time of the year that suits you!

Our official volunteer program begins every Wednesday to allow for a smooth introduction and group orientation. However, if needed, we’re happy to make special arrangements for alternative start dates—just let us know in advance.

Since Kimberley is not located near a major international airport, you’ll need to arrange a connecting domestic flight to Kimberley Airport, where a member of the Felidae team will be waiting to welcome you and transfer you safely to the project. Our staff can assist you with booking this additional flight if needed.

Upon arrival at the sanctuary, you’ll receive a warm welcome, a short tour of the facility, and be introduced to our incredible animals. A brief orientation video and overview session will follow, giving you all the essential information to get started.

Once you’ve unpacked and settled in, you’ll have time to relax, explore the surroundings, and connect with your fellow volunteers—your new team and family during your time with us!
