    MATERIALS FUNDING - PLEASE NOTE:
Our Renovation & Construction Team relies on volunteers to fundraise or donate for the materials and local tradespeople they will be working with. You can bring these funds with you, and we’ll take you to local stores so you can purchase items yourself and keep full transparency with receipts.

    Approximate Budgets:

    • Painting/Decoration: ₵750 per week (paint, brushes and accessories)

    • Construction/Renovation: ₵1,500–2,000 per week (cement, iron rods, sand, water and local masons)

These figures are estimates; exact needs depend on the project status at the time and material prices, which fluctuate regularly.

    About The Placement

Join our School Renovation Team and help improve the safety, security and appearance of local schools and community buildings. From painting classrooms and creating educational displays to roofing a toilet block or plastering a nursery wall, your hands-on work will directly benefit children and their learning environment.

This placement blends practical construction tasks with time in schools and community organisations, so you’ll see firsthand how your efforts create brighter, safer spaces for students and staff.

    Why This Placement Matters

Many schools, clinics and community facilities are built once and then left to deteriorate over the years. Damaged roofs, crumbling walls and broken floors pose real safety hazards for children. By working alongside local tradespeople, we can repair and revitalise these spaces to keep them safe and welcoming.

Once the structural work is complete, we focus on aesthetics—painting walls and creating colourful, educational displays that make classrooms more engaging. Your involvement accelerates these improvements and brings new energy to facilities that are vital to the community.

    What's Included

    • Shared volunteer accommodation in a modern house in semi-rural Kwahu with views of surrounding forests. Utilities such as electricity, running water, and kitchen facilities are provided.

    • Airport pickup on arrival.

    • Pre-departure support and access to our volunteer portal.

    • 24/7 in-country support, with a local team member living on-site or nearby depending on volunteer numbers.

Your contribution directly sustains this support structure, enabling us to employ local staff and ensure volunteers have safe, comfortable living conditions.

    Getting to Your Placement

We work with a number of schools and community sites both locally and in more rural villages.

Budget $2-5 per day for transport. Painting projects in Abetifi or Nkwatia usually cost around 30 cedis per day. Renovation and construction projects in more rural villages such as Hweehwee or Suminakese can be 60+ cedis. Our team can help you coordinate group transport and find the best routes.

Shared taxis are widely available and affordable. After your placement, you’ll still have time to shop, grab a cold drink or meet friends before heading home.

    Your Role

This is a hands-on placement where you’ll be directly involved in building, construction and painting work, regardless of your skill level.

    Examples of tasks include:

    • Construction work such as plastering, skimming, shifting and lifting materials.

    • Renovation tasks such as painting classrooms, creating board displays and improving the appearance of facilities through design and decoration.

We’ll match your abilities and interests to suitable tasks.

    Who You'll Be Working With

You’ll be based at one of our local project sites such as a school, library or clinic. You may work alongside a local skilled tradesperson, learning basic techniques while assisting with larger jobs. Project staff—such as a Headteacher at a school—are usually on site, and a member of our team will visit regularly to offer guidance and support.

Many volunteers form strong bonds with teachers, nursing staff or tradespeople, and it’s not uncommon to be invited to their homes for a meal as a thank-you.

    Volunteer Expectations

No previous manual labour experience is required. We’ll find tasks suited to your interests, skills and confidence level.

    The most important qualities are:

    • Enthusiasm and energy for practical work.

    • Empathy and cultural sensitivity when working with local staff.

    • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs on site.

We expect volunteers to attend placements Monday to Friday (with occasional flexibility for travel). This consistency ensures the community can rely on your help.

What Can You Expect From Us

We’re on hand at any time to support you—whether you’d like help adjusting your timetable, joining another project, or planning weekend travel. Our local team at the volunteer house will also share insights on the area and Ghanaian life so you soon feel at home.

    What to Bring

We recommend fundraising for building materials in advance—bags of cement, tubs of paint, brushes or paying local skilled tradespeople for assistance.

It’s also useful to bring school materials, arts and crafts items and ideas from teaching resource websites for your free time or to share with children and teachers. Basic stationery is available locally, but specialised items are limited.

Wear comfortable clothes suitable for manual work and bring at least one strong pair of shoes.

    During School Holidays

School holidays do not directly affect this placement—the work can continue throughout the year. Holidays typically occur around Easter, August and December.

    • In their free time, volunteers are free to go shopping in the local markets, return to the volunteer house or visit the local swimming pools.

This is just an example day and a flexibility to workload and timings is a crucial skill for a successful volunteer trip. Increasing workload to lengthen your day is possible, you just need to communicate with your in country support team.

    Tjenester på stedet

Atlas Volunteer's aim is to provide low cost, meaningful volunteer placements abroad. By keeping our program fees affordable, we hope for helping hands from across the world to be able to come and help as well as experience Ghana no matter their financial situation.

Our program fees cover the core foundation of your program which are:
    • Registration Fee
    • Airport Collection
    • Volunteer House Accommodation
    • Local Support Staff
    • Volunteer House Utility Bills; Tap Water, Cooking Gas and Electricity
    • Organisation running costs, both online and in country.
    • Marketing & Introduction Commissions
    • Social Funds - When possible we use part of our fees for community development such as; sponsoring of the children's sports academy, mobile library, social enterprises, plastics workshop, farm expansions, reforestation site and seedlings, conservation site maintenance and expansion, scholarship school fees, school materials and maintenance.
    In addition to your core program fees, there will also be some other items you need to consider to cover your complete trip. We have setup our program in this way as we believe that each of our volunteers' trips should be different and personalised to their stay. Due to this, we decided not to choose a blanket price for transport or food for example where this would perhaps increase the fees unnecessarily for volunteers travelling a shorter distance or that eat certain diets. These optional items to consider are;
    • Daily Transport to Projects (Approximately $2-3 as of September 2025 from Aduamoah to Abetifi)
    • Food (Volunteers usually advise $5-6 per day but it's possible to spend less or more depending on if cooking at home or eating out)
    • Drinking Water (Approximately 8 cedis for 30 x 500ml filtered water sachets)
    • Internet / Data (Most of the year we have wifi tickets available which are approximately $15 for a month)
    • Renovation Project fundraising to cover the paint/building supplies you will be using on site.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Kotoka International Airport

Your program fee includes a meet-and-greet airport collection from Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra. Collections are usually scheduled after the final flight of the day — typically between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm GMT.

We recommend booking your flight to arrive on your assigned Sunday start date. If you’re already in Ghana before your start date, we can also collect you from a hotel in Accra, provided you’re flexible on the exact pick-up time. If your flight arrives before 5:00 pm, you’re welcome to wait at the airport until the scheduled collection later in the day.

On arrival, a member of our local team will be waiting just outside the arrivals hall holding a sign with the Atlas logo and your name. They’ll greet you warmly and accompany you — along with any other incoming volunteers — directly to the volunteer house to meet the rest of the team.

Most volunteers travel by Uber and then an air-conditioned bus with our support staff to the Eastern Region. The journey takes roughly 3–4 hours depending on Accra traffic. Depending on the time of day and group size, we may instead arrange a taxi or private minibus to ensure a smooth transfer.

    Need a Different Pick-Up Time?
If you’d like to arrange an airport collection outside the scheduled window or on a different day, we can organise a private transfer for you for an additional fee.

    Indkvartering

Volunteers live together in shared accommodation in the Abetifi district of Ghana along with our support team in house. The house is based in a quiet town where you are within walking distance to local shops, street vendors and taxi routes - all whilst being able to enjoy the beautiful surrounding views of the rainforest and mountains.

    Bedrooms -
Bedrooms are shared usually between 2 - 4 people. Most bedrooms are supplied with a bunk bed. All doors and windows in the house are covered by mosquito netting or covered completely however you are more than welcome to bring a mosquito net for your bed although usually not necessary.

    Bathrooms -
There are basic bathrooms in the accommodation with individual WCs and shower rooms. Most of the time (but not always!) we have the benefit of running water which is a local luxury so showers and toilets will work as normal. We ask to consider others when using the water as it's a valuable commodity in Ghana.

    Kitchen -
We have a basic kitchen available in the volunteer house for you to use throughout the day. The basics of Fridge/Freezer, Gas stove, Kettle and Microwaves are supplied.
It is a self catered placement however plenty of food stuffs can be bought from the market such as bread, rice, pasta and many fresh ingredients.
We also have connections with local people in the town who will be able to prepare your meals or teach you how to cook local dishes.

    Living Room -
There is a large living room with sofas, TV and a dining set for use by the volunteers. Evenings are often spent in here and volunteers are welcome to bring DVDs or memory drives with movies to watch although local television channels are provided.

    Outdoor -
The house circles around a large outside compound where volunteers usually spend their afternoons and evenings eating outside, catching up with the other volunteers and group activities such as games nights.

    Store Room -
We have a small store room where we keep left over teaching materials and resources for new volunteers to use. You are invited to leave any items you may not use here for the next person to continue the flow. Master copies of activity sheets or lesson plans are a key item we hope to see keep growing in the store.
