    DESTINY FOUNDATION: Transforming the Lives of Children With Mental and Physical Disabilities 

    Founded in 2017 by a passionate special needs teacher with over 12 years of experience, this private NGO provides essential care for children born with mental and/or physical disabilities. In Tanzania, many children with disabilities are often denied the education, socialization, and support they need, and some never have the chance to interact with peers. Families sometimes feel shame or are unable to provide proper care.

    The foundation fills this gap by offering a safe, nurturing environment for about 20 resident children, whose parents cannot or do not wish to care for them. Additionally, their Outreach Program supports around 120 children in the community, ensuring that every child receives the care, attention, and love they deserve.

    Services provided include:

    • Physiotherapy

    • Speech therapy

    • Visual stimulation

    • Community awareness initiatives

    • Survival skills and life skills education

    Each child’s needs are unique, so care is personalized according to age and ability. Volunteers work alongside a dedicated team of therapists, social workers, and teachers, ensuring proper guidance, support, and adherence to best practices.

    A typical day at the centre runs from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the option to stay until 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. The centre is also open on weekends, so volunteers can choose to work then. Lunch is provided.

    What’s Included in Your Fees

    When you join us, your fees cover everything you need for a smooth, safe, and rewarding volunteering experience:

    • Pre-arrival support: We’re here to guide you via email, WhatsApp, phone, and video calls, answering your questions and helping you prepare.

    • Airport or bus station transfer: We pick you up when you arrive and drop you off when you leave, making your journey hassle-free.
    • Personalized orientation in Arusha: Enjoy a welcoming tour designed around your needs — including help buying a local SIM card, tips on public transport, and a lunch to start your adventure right.
    • First day project support: Our volunteer coordinator accompanies you to your placement, shows you the best public transport options, and ensures you settle in comfortably.
    • Project donation: A portion of your registration fee (€50) goes directly to our Viva Tanzania Volunteer Fund, supporting projects with unexpected expenses like medical bills, utilities, staff salaries, and supplies.
    • Accommodation: Stay comfortably in our volunteer hostel throughout your placement.
    • Meals: Enjoy breakfast and dinner every day; some projects also include lunch — see individual project details for more info.

    Your fees include two airport transfers: our friendly driver will welcome you upon arrival, take you safely to your accommodation, and bring you back to the airport at the end of your stay.

    Our villa is the ideal home-away-from-home for volunteers, interns, and travelers seeking a vibrant, welcoming community right in the heart of Arusha. Located just a 25-minute walk from the city center, easy transport options like motorcycles, taxis, and dala dalas (local minibuses) are nearby for quick trips around town. After a rewarding day of volunteering, unwind by the sparkling pool, enjoy a refreshing drink at the rooftop bar, or chill out on the breezy rooftop terrace. You’ll also find a shop selling unique handmade items created by our projects and a cozy spa for some well-deserved relaxation. Your safety is our priority — the villa is securely enclosed by sturdy walls and protected by dedicated night watchmen, so you can rest peacefully.

    Rooms

    Choose the accommodation that suits you best: cozy shared dorms with 4 or 6 beds, or for more privacy, comfortable single or double rooms. Every room includes a private bathroom with hot water, spacious closets, and a personal safe to keep your valuables secure. For added comfort, we offer gender-segregated dorms. If you prefer your own space, single and double rooms are available for just €100 extra per person, per week.

    When you’re not volunteering, there’s always something fun to do. Sip cocktails at the rooftop bar, join free cooking, beading, or painting classes exclusively for volunteers, or get moving in the gym. Looking to relax?     For dinner, enjoy a variety of dishes inspired by both Tanzanian and Western cuisines. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or have food allergies or intolerances, we’re happy to accommodate your dietary needs.

    If you prefer to prepare your own meals or snacks, there’s a refrigerator and shelves available where you can safely store your groceries.

    You can start your project on any day that suits you. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), your driver — wearing a Viva Tanzania shirt and holding a sign — will take you to your accommodation.

    Your first day includes an orientation and town tour of Arusha, covering local transport, ATMs, markets, and how to get a SIM card. The next day, a volunteer coordinator will escort you to your project site, ensuring a smooth and safe start to your experience.
