    Om programmet

Based in the stunning coastal village of Paje, this transformative placement addresses critical social issues in early childhood education for low-income communities. You'll work alongside local educators at both public and private pre-primary schools, nurturing young children's physical, cognitive, and emotional development through play-based learning, literacy support, and creative activities. This isn't about giving handouts – it's about capacity building, sharing skills and knowledge that create sustainable, long-term educational improvements.

    Target Community

You'll work with children from low-income families in Paje/Bwejuu and surrounding areas who struggle to access quality early childhood education. These bright, energetic kids aged 2-6 deserve the same opportunities as children anywhere in the world, but their families face significant barriers. Without quality pre-primary education, these children enter primary school already behind, limiting their future opportunities. Your presence directly impacts their development during these crucial early years.

    The Challenge

Many families in Zanzibar's coastal communities cannot access quality education for their children, creating a cycle of limited opportunities. Early childhood education is often overlooked, yet these foundational years are critical for cognitive, social, and emotional development. Local pre-primary schools operate with limited resources, overcrowded classrooms, and few trained early childhood educators. Children need nurturing environments where play-based learning, literacy development, and creative exploration are prioritized – but these approaches require skills, knowledge, and capacity that many schools lack.

    Our Partnership Approach

We work directly with local pre-primary schools and their educators, focusing on capacity building rather than short-term material donations. You'll collaborate closely with local teachers, sharing skills, knowledge, and ideas that improve educational standards long after you leave. This sustainable approach ensures your impact continues, empowering local educators while providing children with the nurturing, quality education they deserve in a safe and supportive environment.

    • Sports and after school activities support: Set up games, sports and activities for children in the local area to enjoy during and after school!

    Capacity Building:

    • Curriculum Development: Help develop lesson plans and educational materials that can be used long-term
    • Knowledge Exchange: Engage in meaningful dialogue with local staff, learning from their expertise while sharing your own

    What You'll Learn & Gain

    • Early Childhood Education Skills: Develop expertise in play-based learning, child development, and age-appropriate teaching methods
    • Cross-Cultural Teaching: Learn to engage children from diverse backgrounds and adapt activities to local contexts
    • Classroom Management: Build confidence managing young children in dynamic, sometimes challenging environments
    • Creativity & Resourcefulness: Master teaching with limited materials, turning everyday items into learning tools
    • Capacity Building Approach: Understand sustainable development and how to create lasting educational impact
    • Kiswahili Language: Pick up basic Swahili through daily interactions with children and staff
    • Cultural Immersion: Experience authentic Zanzibari coastal life while living and working in Paje
    • Personal Growth: Develop patience, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of educational inequity
Turn Your Volunteer Experience Into an Accredited Diploma

Your time volunteering can become much more than an unforgettable experience. Alongside your placement, you have the opportunity to complete an internationally recognised accredited diploma, built entirely around the work you're already doing in Tanzania. With no exams and only a small amount of additional work completed online throughout your programme, you'll graduate with a recognised qualification that can strengthen your CV, support university applications and, in many countries, even contribute towards academic credit.

A More Purposeful Approach to Volunteering

We believe that meaningful volunteering requires more than simply placing volunteers in a project and hoping for the best.

That's why we've designed our programs around a structured support model that combines hands-on placement work with ongoing mentorship, planning, reflection and community engagement. Throughout your program, you'll have access to dedicated planning sessions, project resources, coordinator support and regular group debriefs, all designed to help you develop confidence, contribute meaningfully and gain a much deeper understanding of community development in practice.

Rather than treating volunteering as a passive experience where everything is planned for you, we encourage volunteers to take initiative, think creatively and actively engage with the communities they work alongside. We provide the guidance, resources and support—but your willingness to participate, problem-solve and step outside your comfort zone is equally important.

Managing Your Expectations: The Reality of Volunteering

Whilst we do our best to be as accurate as possible with what to expect on your program, the nature of volunteering is fundamentally about coming to one of the most challenged parts of the world, learning to understand the barriers and challenges surrounding community development, and then being flexible, adaptable, and proactive in working on solutions to how you can be of best benefit during your time there.

Volunteering is, more than anything, a learning experience—so please always expect the unexpected. It's not a curated or meticulously planned travel experience. In fact, it's quite the opposite. You might find that some community members are incredibly welcoming from day one, eager to have you lead activities and drive initiatives. Others may be more skeptical or hesitant to have you heavily involved right away, preferring to continue with their established ways of doing things.

Don't let this worry you, and don't be quick to assume you're in the wrong place. Take the time to adapt to a new culture and its challenges. Focus first and foremost on building rapport with those you're working with—get to know the students, teachers, NGO staff, and community members. Show respect, demonstrate that you're not there to immediately change their ways, and then slowly and respectfully introduce ideas about how you could be better involved, support classroom management, or share the workload.

If you find you're not doing what you expected, please lean on our coordinators for support—there is almost always a solution, and that's exactly what they're there for.

Ultimately, our volunteers are the ones who drive all of our initiatives as an organization. Our core focus is on capacity building and making sustainable improvements through sharing ideas, skills, and knowledge. As such, we cannot always provide a pre-set, specifically structured experience. We can, however, guide, support, and equip you along the way.

The volunteers who are flexible, open-minded, adaptable, willing to work through challenges, and take the most initiative in their programs are always the ones who have the best and most enriching experiences!

    Indkvartering

Our Home Away From Home - Paje Hostel

During your stay, you'll be based at our vibrant volunteer hostel located in the heart of Paje on Zanzibar’s beautiful east coast. It’s genuinely one of the best places to base yourself while volunteering on the island, combining a social atmosphere, comfortable accommodation, and an amazing location just minutes from the beach.

    Family-Style Living

Our warm and friendly team is based on-site, so there is always someone around to help with whatever you need. The hostel has become a home away from home for many volunteers, and it’s very common for people to stay in touch long after they leave.

    Location

The House is located on the main road, directly in Paje, one of Zanzibar’s most popular and lively beach towns. We are only a short 3–5 minute walk from the stunning white sand beach and turquoise water the island is famous for. Everything you need is within walking distance, including cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, gyms, pharmacies, shops, ATMs, and local transport options.

At our hostel, you are just a few meters from Paje Beach!

The location is also very convenient for placements, with some projects within walking distance and others easily accessible via inexpensive local transport rides.

    The Rooms

All rooms are clean, comfortable, and newly renovated, each with private ensuite bathrooms and hot showers.

Rooms are shared dorm-style accommodation with other volunteers and are gender-specific where appropriate. Sharing with other participants is a huge part of the experience, and many volunteers leave having made lifelong friendships with the people they stayed with.

    Common Spaces

We have a large swimming pool, outdoor couches and lounge spaces, a vibrant bar area, cozy hangout spots, and restaurant-style dining spaces where everyone comes together throughout the day. Whether you want to relax quietly, meet other volunteers, plan weekend trips, or enjoy social evenings together, there’s always something happening around the hostel.

    Food & Connection

Breakfast and dinner are included each day, and dinner especially tends to become a really social part of the experience where volunteers, travelers, and staff all come together. Our Chefs are professionally trained, and serve tasty, healthy meals.

We also provide Wi-Fi throughout the hostel (although, as with much of Zanzibar, occasional outages can happen from time to time).

    Real Support

Our team genuinely cares about making sure volunteers feel safe, supported, and comfortable throughout their stay. Whether you need help arranging transport, booking activities, adjusting to life on the island, or simply have questions, our coordinators and local staff are always there to assist.

While this is still volunteer-style accommodation in a developing country, we pride ourselves on offering a much more comfortable, social, and supportive environment than any other standard volunteer housing on the island.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Breakfast and Dinner is provided each day.

We offer a mix of local and Western dishes like rice-based meals, curries, fish, and pasta, along with drinks like fruit juices and chai. We're happy to cater to special dietary needs, like vegetarian or vegan diets, ensuring everyone can enjoy delicious and satisfying meals during their time with us.
