Other Things to Consider When Working with Children in Bali
Return Airport Transfer
Your return airport transfer is not included in the program fee. Most volunteers use ridesharing apps or private taxis. If you’re traveling around Bali during your final days, the cost of transport can often be shared with other participants heading to the airport.
Major Holiday Destination
Bali is a popular tourist destination, and while it’s a great place to volunteer, some participants may feel less engaged with the project work compared to volunteering in other locations like Ghana, Tanzania, or India, where there may be a more obvious need for international volunteers. If you’re looking to travel as part of your experience, you might want to consider volunteering for a shorter period or choosing a destination with a greater emphasis on community need.
Resources
Resources at childcare centers in Bali can sometimes be limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bring materials to help maximize their impact. Preparing in advance will ensure you get the most out of your volunteer experience in Bali.
Placement Settings
The Akasa Foundation does not offer volunteer placements in orphanages. Studies show that orphanage volunteering can contribute to a system that separates children from their families, leading to potential risks of neglect and abuse. Instead, we focus on supporting projects where children return home each day, ensuring a safe, responsible, and sustainable approach to childcare.
Weekends
Volunteer work in Bali runs from Monday to Thursday, leaving Fridays to Sundays free for travel or relaxation. Most participants use this time to explore Bali, and we provide a Bali Weekend Travel Guide for suggestions on things to do. Additionally, we offer two weekend trips: the Gili Paradise Island Trip and the Ubud Trip, which are available every month.
