    Om programmet

As a childcare volunteer in Sri Lanka, you’ll make a real difference in the lives of children from difficult backgrounds. You’ll help with their education, encourage positive habits, and contribute to the local community’s well-being. The projects we work with focus on early childhood education, and the more support these children receive, the better their chances for a brighter future.

    Background to the Childcare Program

In Sri Lanka, children can attend preschool from ages 3 to 5. Unfortunately, many government-run preschools face challenges such as overcrowding and lack of resources, often with just one or two teachers for large groups of children. As a result, children may miss out on key stages of early development. Early exposure to engaging activities is crucial for preparing them for school and helping them develop social and emotional skills.

Volunteers in local preschools give children the valuable opportunity to be introduced to the English language early on. This builds their confidence and helps lay the foundation for learning English in the future, which can improve their opportunities later in life.

Volunteering with children in Sri Lanka is a rewarding experience and open to people from all backgrounds. By supporting these preschools, you’ll ensure that children get a strong start to their education. Your time, skills, and care will also support local teachers. Additionally, there are animal welfare projects in Sri Lanka that you can volunteer with.

    Childcare Volunteer Placement Examples

Urban Council Preschools – Volunteers help support a network of preschools in Ambalangoda. The local team works with up to 8 preschools in the area, each with different backgrounds. Some preschools are free to attend, while others charge a small fee. Regardless, all the children come from low-income families and would greatly benefit from volunteer support.

Your work will help parents who can’t afford quality childcare and provide them with the opportunity to work and support their families. One example is the Sun Rise Preschool & Day Care Centre, which is fully funded by the local team. Volunteers often lead activities like holiday camps at this preschool.

These preschools give children aged 1-4 years a safe place to learn and grow while their parents work in local factories, such as cinnamon or garment factories. As a volunteer, you’ll assist with basic education and get creative by leading dance and exercise classes, teaching basic vocabulary, distributing snacks, and organising arts and crafts activities.

Other Considerations When Working with Children in Sri Lanka

Resources – Resources for childcare projects can be limited, so it’s recommended that volunteers bring materials to help with their daily activities. Being well-prepared will allow you to get the most out of your volunteer experience in Sri Lanka.

Placement Settings – PMGY does not offer volunteer opportunities in orphanages. Research has shown that orphanage volunteering can lead to the separation of children from their families, increasing the risk of neglect and abuse. Therefore, we do not support orphanages in our network.

Instead, we focus on safe childcare projects where children go home at the end of the day. These projects are carefully chosen and provide a safe, responsible environment where volunteers can assist local staff while respecting the children’s family connections.

Project Flexibility – This volunteer project operates in the mornings, giving you the opportunity to participate in teaching projects during the afternoon. A minimum commitment of one week is required for each project, and you can finalize these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka. There are no additional costs, and we always welcome extra support for the community-based projects.

Top Destination – Sri Lanka is often regarded as one of the best volunteer destinations due to the exceptional local support, great value for money, and the overall experience in Ambalangoda. The local team goes above and beyond to ensure that every volunteer has an unforgettable experience, which is reflected in the positive feedback received. This makes it an ideal choice for first-time travellers seeking extra support, a variety of organised weekend trips, and the opportunity to participate in meaningful local initiatives in an exotic setting.

Return Airport Transfer – Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging transfers to the airport or other destinations from the volunteer accommodation. It’s more flexible to make these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka, as travel plans can change, and you might be able to coordinate with others on similar flight schedules. The cost will vary depending on your transport method and final destination, and if you’re traveling with other participants, it can often be shared. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for your airport transfer, as while they may be cheaper, they are less convenient and pose additional safety risks.

Weekends – Weekends in Sri Lanka are free, allowing you to relax or explore the country. Most participants take this opportunity to travel, while others enjoy downtime at the volunteer accommodation. We provide a Sri Lanka Weekend Travel Guide with top tips for making the most of your weekends. Additionally, before you depart for Sri Lanka, you can sign up for one of our exciting weekend trips, including the Adventure Hill & Country Trip, the Cultural Triangle & Elephants Trip, and the Maldives Chill Out Trip. These trips run every month, giving you plenty of chances to join in. Your project work is from Monday to Friday, so you’ll have plenty of time to experience Sri Lanka’s beauty and culture.

YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE & TYPICAL CHILDCARE DAY

As a childcare volunteer in Sri Lanka, your main role is to care for and encourage children, helping them gain confidence and reach their potential. You’ll work Monday to Friday, with preschool sessions usually running from 9 am to 11:30 am. Some preschools may start earlier or finish later, and you can extend your time if you choose. There are also afternoon community education sessions available if you want to get involved in additional projects. The placement locations are about 30 minutes away by tuk-tuk or private minibus.

Your time as a volunteer will focus on teaching English and supporting early education. You’ll assist local teachers in leading activities that help create a fun and safe learning environment. Your tasks will include helping with arts and crafts, singing, dancing, games, and basic English lessons, all designed to help the children develop important skills in a creative way.

We encourage volunteers to use fun and engaging activities to keep the children interested and make learning enjoyable. You could use props for alphabet games, create colorful posters, or find objects around the preschool for counting activities. You may also help with light housekeeping, such as preparing meals and assisting young children with hygiene tasks.

Working with young children is less structured than teaching older students. Language skills can be built through play and interaction, so simple words and phrases will help them develop English for the future. Our local team will provide support with activity ideas, and it’s important for volunteers to prepare activities that suit the children’s age group for a meaningful experience.

Volunteers are based in Ambalangoda, a lively town on the South West Coast of Sri Lanka, just a 5-minute tuk tuk ride from the beach. The town has all the amenities you might need, including banks, hospitals, shops, and a popular ice cream shop. Ambalangoda also features a central bus and train station, offering excellent transport links to major destinations.

Traditionally a fishing community, Ambalangoda is also famous as the main production center for demonic wooden masks. These masks, once worn by performers in Kolam and other southern Sri Lankan dances, are now primarily sold as souvenirs. Many local families hang a mask on their front doors to ward off evil spirits.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Bandaranaike International Airport

You should arrive into Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) on the Saturday. The airport pickup is available 24 hours.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you to the Volunteer House in Ambalangoda where you can relax and settle in. This journey takes around 2 hours.

    Indkvartering

During your time on the Sri Lanka volunteer program, you will live in our Volunteer House just outside of central Ambalangoda, in a peaceful part of town on the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is just a 10 minute tuk-tuk journey into the main town, where you can find ATMs, supermarkets and local restaurants. You’ll be living with other volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way!

The accommodation is basic but comfortable and clean, fitting up to 10 people per room in single-sex bedrooms with bunk beds. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and bed linen. You will have cupboard space to store clothes and accessories as well as a personal locker to store your valuables. However, volunteers are still encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Sri Lanka.

The bathrooms are shared, each with a shower and western style toilet. The water is cold but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Sri Lanka, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

The house has free Wi-Fi available and a communal area for international volunteers to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English. There is also a refrigerator to store any items you need to keep chilled. A member of our local team will also live at the house. This ensures you have round the clock support and security.

We will transport you via tuk-tuk or private car to and from your volunteer placement, which is usually between 5-30 minutes away from the house. This service is included in your Program Fee.

During our busiest months you may be placed at alternative accommodation. For instance, you could be placed in one of our secondary Volunteer Houses.

    Mad og drikkevarer

You will be served three meals per day at the Volunteer House. Most meals are traditional Sri Lankan dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Sri Lankan cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that blends Sri Lanka cuisine with Western cuisine so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day! Below is an example of the meals we serve our volunteers:

Breakfast – Egg, toast, fruit with tea.
Lunch – Dhal and spinach curry, poppadums, paprika tofu and rice.
Dinner – Mixed vegetable noodles, tomato curry, omelette and poppadoms.

All meals are freshly prepared each day. If you fancy some western comforts, you will find plenty of restaurants serving western meals in the nearby town of Hikkaduwa. Hikkaduwa is a 20 minute journey from Ambalangoda and the cost to get there by tuk tuk is around £3 per way. This is a popular place that volunteers go to in the evening, as it is a trendy backpackers town.

    * Please inform us in your application if you have any dietary requirements. Couples, families and older volunteers will be accommodated to suit their needs.
