    Project Overview

Farmers in this rural area are facing serious challenges due to the lack of helping hands to support the daily tasks required to keep farming alive. Many families depend entirely on sugar cane, coffee, and small-scale agriculture, but without enough support they struggle to sow, harvest, or process their crops on time. This situation is forcing some farmers to abandon their land and lose their only source of income. Volunteers play a vital role in helping these families continue their traditional livelihoods and maintain the cultural and environmental value of rural farming.

    Why This Project Matters

Agriculture and beekeeping are essential for the survival of local families, yet both are at risk. Many farmers still use very old, artisanal techniques passed down through generations. While these traditions are valuable, they often lack modern practices that protect the environment, improve crop quality, and ensure the health of bee colonies. By supporting this project, volunteers help preserve ancestral knowledge while introducing safer, more sustainable methods that strengthen the community’s resilience and protect the ecosystem.

    Volunteer Role

Volunteers assist with a wide variety of hands-on tasks depending on the season and the needs of each farm:

    On sugar cane farms:

    • Cleaning and preparing the land

    • Planting and maintaining crops

    • Harvesting sugar cane

    • Transporting cane by mule to the trapiche (grinder)

    • Helping process the cane juice into panela

    • Packaging the final product

    On coffee farms:

    • Land preparation and planting

    • Crop maintenance and fertilization

    • Harvesting coffee cherries

    • Taking beans to the beneficiadero to be washed, peeled, selected, dried, and packed

    In beekeeping:

    • Supporting hive maintenance

    • Creating healthier spaces for bees

    • Learning and teaching safe beekeeping practices

    • Helping expand the number of hives and colonies

    • Exploring new bee‑based products

    • Raising awareness about the importance of pollinators for crops and ecosystems

Although farm work is available year‑round, the main harvest seasons are April–May and October–November.

    Community Impact

Your contribution directly supports rural families who rely on agriculture as their only income. By helping with daily tasks, improving production, and introducing ecological techniques, volunteers strengthen the local economy and help farmers remain self‑sufficient. In beekeeping, volunteers help protect pollinators, increase biodiversity, and improve crop yields—creating long‑term benefits for the entire community.

    Cultural Exchange

Volunteers work alongside farmers and their families, sharing meals, stories, and traditions. This is a unique opportunity to experience authentic rural life in Colombia, learn ancestral farming techniques, and connect deeply with the community. During free time, volunteers can explore the beautiful countryside, mountains, waterfalls, and nearby cultural towns.

    Who We Look For

No previous experience is required. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and motivation to help are truly appreciated. Volunteers play an essential role in empowering rural communities to stay united, preserve their traditions, and keep farming alive for future generations.

In addition to participating in this project, volunteers could join other community initiatives at no extra cost, such as the youth centre, the elderly centre, or the program supporting people with special needs. This flexibility adds dynamism to the experience, allowing volunteers to explore different social environments and avoid the monotony of working in a single setting. By combining activities, volunteers gain a deeper cultural exchange and a more comprehensive understanding of community life in Colombia.

    Typisk dag

A typical day begins early in the morning, when temperatures are cooler and farm work is most comfortable. Volunteers start the day with a traditional breakfast prepared by the host family before heading out to the fields.

Morning activities vary depending on the season and the needs of the farm. Volunteers may help clean and prepare the land, plant or maintain crops, harvest sugar cane or coffee, or transport produce—often by mule—to the trapiche or beneficiadero for processing. Those supporting beekeeping may assist with hive checks, creating healthy spaces for colonies, or learning about honey extraction and other bee‑based products.

Work usually finishes before midday, as the heat becomes too strong for safe and comfortable outdoor labor. After returning home for lunch, volunteers have the rest of the day free to relax, explore the countryside, visit waterfalls or nearby towns, or spend time with the host family.

Because the afternoons are free, volunteers also have the option to combine this program with another project in the area, allowing them to experience different activities and contribute to multiple community initiatives.

Evenings are calm and peaceful, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy rural Colombian life and connect deeply with the community.

La Mesa offers a peaceful rural environment surrounded by mountains, rivers, and waterfalls. Volunteers can enjoy nature walks, birdwatching, swimming spots, and scenic viewpoints such as La Cruz Peak or the Apulo River trails. Nearby towns like Anapoima, San Antonio del Tequendama, and Mesitas del Colegio offer local markets, traditional food, and cultural experiences.

The region also includes natural attractions such as the Orchid Sanctuary and the Tequendama area, known for its landscapes and biodiversity. On weekends, volunteers may explore Bogotá’s museums, restaurants, and historic neighborhoods.

For those interested in adventure, optional weekend trips can be arranged to visit caves, waterfalls, coffee and sugar cane farms, or other regions of Colombia such as Santander or Boyacá. Some volunteers choose to travel further during longer stays, visiting destinations like Tayrona National Park, Cartagena, or Caño Cristales.

The climate in La Mesa is warm and pleasant year-round, making it ideal for outdoor activities and cultural immersion.

We provide airport pick-up at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá.

Due to Bogotá’s driving restrictions (“pico y placa”), we can only drive on even-numbered days.

For this reason, volunteers should plan their arrival for an even day of the month.

    Indkvartering

The volunteer accommodation is located at the Volunteer in Colombia headquarters in Paraíso Village. It is a small, peaceful country house surrounded by mountains, gardens, and a nearby river. The bungalow can host up to 7 volunteers at the same time and is connected to the coordinator’s main house.

    We offer:

    • 3 single bedrooms (available when requested or when fewer than 6 volunteers are staying)

    • 1 twin room for two volunteers

    • 1 double bedroom for a couple or a single volunteer if needed

All rooms are well‑decorated and include a desk, lamp, electricity, and access to hot and cold showers in two shared bathrooms. Bed linen is provided; volunteers only need to bring their own toiletries.

Shared spaces include the gardens, dining room, and kitchen. The volunteer bungalow also has a small sitting area for relaxing or reading.

Because this is a rural environment, volunteers should be prepared with:

    • light, long‑sleeved clothing

    • insect repellent and sunscreen

    • a hat and a flashlight for walking at night

    • dark‑colored clothes (laundry is done with cold water)

The area is very quiet and tranquil, ideal for reading, writing, or enjoying nature. Volunteers may encounter small country animals such as crickets, spiders, mosquitoes, birds, and harmless insects. Bringing books, movies, or personal entertainment is recommended.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Meals provided are home‑cooked and based on traditional Colombian cuisine. Food is prepared with fresh local ingredients and reflects the simple, healthy diet of rural communities.

We provide two meals per day from Monday to Friday:

    • Breakfast: eggs, hot chocolate or coffee, cereal or bread

    • Dinner: a home‑cooked meal including vegetables, rice or pasta, salad or soup, and meat or chicken. Normally is lighter than lunch.

On Saturdays, one meal is provided. No meals are offered on Sundays, giving volunteers the flexibility to explore local restaurants or cook their own food.

Volunteers may use the kitchen and BBQ area in the evenings or on weekends if they prefer to prepare their own meals.

Any additional food or meals eaten outside are not included in the program fee.

We can accommodate basic dietary preferences when informed in advance, although options may be limited due to the rural setting.
