    Om programmet

Volunteering to teach English in Sri Lanka is a great way to help young people unlock future opportunities. Learning English is an essential skill that opens doors to better career prospects and greater possibilities. By interacting with fluent English speakers, students will gain the confidence to improve their language skills. If you're enthusiastic and full of energy, this project is perfect for you!

    Background to the Teaching Program

Sri Lanka offers universal public education for children aged 6 to 18. However, many government schools, especially in rural areas, lack sufficient funding and resources. Classrooms are often overcrowded, with up to 40 to 60 children in a class, making it hard for teachers to provide individual attention. Speaking English is becoming increasingly important in Sri Lanka due to the country's reliance on tourism and migrant workers in the Middle East, both of which require English-speaking skills. However, the quality of English teaching in government schools is often limited. Teachers' English skills are basic, and the focus is typically on memorization rather than understanding. Only middle and upper-class children can afford private English lessons, leaving children from lower-income families with minimal access to language education.

Many children attend government schools but can't afford additional tuition classes that are crucial for academic success. These classes are expensive, and the public education system doesn't allocate enough time for English instruction. As a result, children from low-income families often have little to no exposure to English. The aim of this volunteer program is to give these children the same opportunities to learn English as their wealthier peers, helping them improve their language skills and future career prospects.

In addition to teaching English, there are also opportunities to volunteer in animal welfare and other community projects in Sri Lanka.

    Teaching Volunteer Placement Options

As a volunteer, you will be placed at one of our English teaching programs. You will mainly help in local village communities through our after-school education program. There's also the opportunity to teach young Buddhist monks at local temples.

    Community Village School Projects
These after-school education programs, initiated by Eurasia Exchange in 2013, are the core of the volunteer teaching project. Volunteers work in several villages around the Ambalangoda district, providing free English lessons to children from low-income areas. Your role will involve teaching English to students aged 6-18 years old, divided into smaller groups based on their English proficiency. Classes typically range from 4-15 children, allowing for focused instruction. These lessons take place in community centers or makeshift classrooms in the village.

The aim is to provide these children with additional English language education beyond what they receive in school, helping them improve their language skills. Volunteers can expect to work alongside local coordinators who will provide support, and the schedule usually allows time for other volunteer activities in the mornings.

    Temple Schools
In addition to the afternoon community projects, volunteers have the option to teach English to Buddhist monks in local temples. Classes usually take place in the mornings for 1.5 hours. Many of the monks speak very little English, and the temple schools welcome local children from surrounding communities as well. Each class typically has 5-10 students, aged 6-18 years.

Participation in the temple school project is optional, but all volunteers are required to join the afternoon community school project. The temple school project offers a great opportunity for volunteers to deepen their experience and further contribute to the community.

    Experience & TEFL Course

Experience is not necessary for teaching English, as simply being a native English speaker is already incredibly valuable. As long as you are creative and enthusiastic, you will have a positive impact on the students' learning.

However, if you'd like to prepare further, we recommend taking our 60-hour Online TEFL course. It’s an affordable, internationally accredited course that costs only $150 USD. It will help you maximize your effectiveness as a volunteer

    Resources

Resources for teaching English in Sri Lanka can be limited, so we encourage volunteers to bring their own materials, such as teaching aids or educational games, to enhance the learning experience. Proper preparation will help you make the most of your time teaching and contribute to the children’s education.

Through your involvement in this project, you’ll help transform the educational opportunities for children in Sri Lanka, giving them the tools they need to build a brighter future.

    Top Destination

Sri Lanka is often regarded as one of the best volunteer destinations due to the exceptional local support, great value for money, and the overall experience in Ambalangoda. The local team goes above and beyond to ensure that every volunteer has an unforgettable experience, which is reflected in the positive feedback received. This makes it an ideal choice for first-time travellers seeking extra support, a variety of organised weekend trips, and the opportunity to participate in meaningful local initiatives in an exotic setting.

    Return Airport Transfer

Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging transfers to the airport or other destinations from the volunteer accommodation. It’s more flexible to make these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka, as travel plans can change, and you might be able to coordinate with others on similar flight schedules. The cost will vary depending on your transport method and final destination, and if you’re traveling with other participants, it can often be shared. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for your airport transfer, as while they may be cheaper, they are less convenient and pose additional safety risks.

    Weekends

Weekends in Sri Lanka are free, allowing you to relax or explore the country. Most participants take this opportunity to travel, while others enjoy downtime at the volunteer accommodation. We provide a Sri Lanka Weekend Travel Guide with top tips for making the most of your weekends. Additionally, before you depart for Sri Lanka, you can sign up for one of our exciting weekend trips, including the Adventure Hill & Country Trip, the Cultural Triangle & Elephants Trip, and the Maldives Chill Out Trip. These trips run every month, giving you plenty of chances to join in. Your project work is from Monday to Friday, so you’ll have plenty of time to experience Sri Lanka’s beauty and culture.

YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE & TYPICAL TEACHING DAY

As a volunteer teaching English in Sri Lanka, your main role is to share your time and skills with the local community in Ambalangoda. You'll help boost their confidence in speaking English and support their learning, giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The after-school volunteer program runs from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. You'll usually travel to the project site by tuk-tuk or minibus, which takes about 10 minutes.

The first part of the session focuses on teaching English, and the last hour is dedicated to games and activities. We encourage volunteers to make lessons fun and engaging.

You can use games like word searches, Hangman, or team quizzes, and incorporate songs, arts, sports, and music. Resources and lesson plans are available at the Volunteer House to help you prepare.

Having international volunteers gives the children a chance to experience different cultures and gain a global perspective. Use your creativity to inspire the children and help them unlock their potential.

As a volunteer, you'll be in charge of your own lessons and can create your own lesson plans. If needed, curriculum materials or topic suggestions are available for inspiration. Depending on the number of volunteers, you may work in pairs or small groups. We typically have 3-6 classes in each community, but this varies based on volunteer numbers.

A local coordinator will be present at the project each day to assist and help with any language barriers. However, it’s important not to rely too heavily on the coordinators for translation when teaching English.

At the temple schools, classes are held in the mornings, from 8:30 am to 10 am, Monday to Friday, with a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride to the site. The activities are similar to the after-school program but are typically quieter, focusing on a calm learning environment. In return for your work, the monks are often happy to share insights about their religion and lifestyle.

Volunteers are based in Ambalangoda, a lively town on the South West Coast of Sri Lanka, just a 5-minute tuk tuk ride from the beach. The town has all the amenities you might need, including banks, hospitals, shops, and a popular ice cream shop. Ambalangoda also features a central bus and train station, offering excellent transport links to major destinations.

Traditionally a fishing community, Ambalangoda is also famous as the main production center for demonic wooden masks. These masks, once worn by performers in Kolam and other southern Sri Lankan dances, are now primarily sold as souvenirs. Many local families hang a mask on their front doors to ward off evil spirits.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Bandaranaike International Airport

You should arrive into Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) on the Saturday. The airport pickup is available 24 hours.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you to the Volunteer House in Ambalangoda where you can relax and settle in. This journey takes around 2 hours.

    Indkvartering

During your time on the Sri Lanka volunteer program, you will live in our Volunteer House just outside of central Ambalangoda, in a peaceful part of town on the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is just a 10 minute tuk-tuk journey into the main town, where you can find ATMs, supermarkets and local restaurants. You’ll be living with other volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way!

The accommodation is basic but comfortable and clean, fitting up to 10 people per room in single-sex bedrooms with bunk beds. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and bed linen. You will have cupboard space to store clothes and accessories as well as a personal locker to store your valuables. However, volunteers are still encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Sri Lanka.

The bathrooms are shared, each with a shower and western style toilet. The water is cold but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Sri Lanka, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

The house has free Wi-Fi available and a communal area for international volunteers to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English. There is also a refrigerator to store any items you need to keep chilled. A member of our local team will also live at the house. This ensures you have round the clock support and security.

We will transport you via tuk-tuk or private car to and from your volunteer placement, which is usually between 5-30 minutes away from the house. This service is included in your Program Fee.

During our busiest months you may be placed at alternative accommodation. For instance, you could be placed in one of our secondary Volunteer Houses.

    Mad og drikkevarer

You will be served three meals per day at the Volunteer House. Most meals are traditional Sri Lankan dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Sri Lankan cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that blends Sri Lanka cuisine with Western cuisine so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day! Below is an example of the meals we serve our volunteers:

Breakfast – Egg, toast, fruit with tea.
Lunch – Dhal and spinach curry, poppadums, paprika tofu and rice.
Dinner – Mixed vegetable noodles, tomato curry, omelette and poppadoms.

All meals are freshly prepared each day. If you fancy some western comforts, you will find plenty of restaurants serving western meals in the nearby town of Hikkaduwa. Hikkaduwa is a 20 minute journey from Ambalangoda and the cost to get there by tuk tuk is around £3 per way. This is a popular place that volunteers go to in the evening, as it is a trendy backpackers town.

    * Please inform us in your application if you have any dietary requirements. Couples, families and older volunteers will be accommodated to suit their needs.
