    Why is Our Program Important?

Coastal ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves are under severe threat due to climate change, pollution, and unsustainable tourism. At Ecotourism Nusa Penida, we bridge the gap between conservation, community development, and responsible tourism. Our program is designed to address these challenges by restoring marine habitats, empowering local communities, and fostering environmental education. Volunteers play a crucial role in these efforts, gaining hands-on experience while making a tangible impact.

What Will You Do as a Volunteer?

Our program is structured around four key pillars: marine conservation, ecosystem rehabilitation, community work, and ecotourism activities. Volunteers participate in a mix of fieldwork, educational sessions, cultural experiences and exploring Nusa Penida's beautiful sights ensuring both meaningful contributions and a deep understanding of the local environment.

    Daily Activities Include:

Coral Reef Restoration: Assist in rehabilitating degraded reef areas by transplanting corals, maintaining coral nurseries, and monitoring coral health through surveys and underwater photography.

Mangrove Reforestation: Learn about the role of mangroves in carbon sequestration and coastal protection while planting seedlings and maintaining existing forests.

Community Engagement: Work with local schoolchildren to teach swimming, environmental awareness, and English, fostering a new generation of conservationists.

Supporting the Local Blue Economy: Engage with seaweed farmers to understand their role in sustainable livelihoods and how their work connects to reef health.

Help with turtle conservation: Learn more about sea turtles and help local turtle-saviors with their rescued turtles!

Balinese Culture Introduction: Want to know how to make coconut oil the traditional way? Or how to cook a Balinese dish? You will find out!

Beach & Reef Clean-Ups: Help remove plastic waste from marine habitats, reducing pollution and preventing harm to marine life.

Additionally, volunteers attend daily presentations and workshops covering topics such as coral ecology, marine biodiversity, and sustainable tourism, ensuring they gain both practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

Where Will You Work & Live?

Nusa Penida is a stunning island close to Bali in Indonesia’s Coral Triangle, known for its crystal-clear waters, diverse marine life, and vibrant coastal communities. Volunteers work in several key locations, including:

Our Coral Restoration Sites: Shallow and deep reef areas where restoration projects are actively underway.

Mangrove Forests: Coastal areas on Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan dedicated to reforestation.

Local Schools & Community Centers: Spaces where volunteers engage with local children in education and awareness programs.

Volunteers stay in comfortable, locally owned shared bungalows with 4 people (no mixed gender) maximum per bungalow.

    Who Will You Work With?

Our Team: Conservationists, local Coral-heroes and dive professionals who provide training and guidance.

Local Conservation Groups: Work alongside the Community Nuansa Pulau, our partner community of coral lovers.

International NGOs & Researchers: Collaborate on scientific research and conservation projects.

Local Fishermen & Seaweed Farmers: Gain firsthand insights into traditional coastal livelihoods.

Fellow Volunteers: Become part of a passionate, global network of like-minded conservationists.

    Typisk dag

A Typical Day as a Volunteer at Ecotourism Nusa Penida

Your day begins with waking up in the comfort of your room and enjoying a breakfast of your choice.

At around 8:30 AM, you’ll take a short, scenic 7-minute walk to our basecamp, passing through the peaceful island surroundings as the day comes to life. Upon arrival, you can grab a cup of freshly brewed coffee from Coral Café, our community café upstairs, before settling in for the morning’s educational session. These daily presentations will give you a deeper understanding of marine conservation, coral reef ecology, and restoration techniques—so you always know the why behind what you’re doing.

By 9:30 AM, it's time to get hands-on! You’ll head out to our coral restoration site to work directly on reef rehabilitation. Depending on the day's plan, you might be:

Assisting with coral transplantation and maintenance.

Conducting reef health assessments and underwater monitoring.

Participating in a mangrove reforestation effort on the neighbor island Nusa Lembongan.

Engaging in a beach or reef clean-up.

Visiting a local school to teach swimming or environmental awareness.

For those activities located further from our basecamp, transportation is provided to ensure smooth logistics.

Around 1:00 PM, it's lunch break, time to enjoy a delicious meal, recharge, and chat with your fellow volunteers.

After lunch, the afternoon offers flexibility and exploration. Some days, you’ll continue with conservation activities, while on others, you’ll have time to discover the island’s natural beauty. This could mean snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, hiking to breathtaking viewpoints, or simply relaxing on the beach.

Evenings are a time to unwind. While dinner is flexible, we often gather to share a meal and exchange stories from the day. Once a week, we host a big local barbecue with the community, where you’ll experience authentic island flavors, music, and culture—creating unforgettable memories with both locals and fellow volunteers.

Weekends are yours to enjoy! Whether you want to explore the nearby islands, go diving with manta rays, or just relax in a hammock, you have the freedom to make the most of your time in paradise. Your accommodation has a beautiful pool as well!

This daily rhythm ensures a perfect balance between conservation, cultural immersion, and adventure—allowing you to make a real impact while enjoying everything Nusa Penida has to offer. 🌿🐠🌊
