    🧡 About the Program

Ithemba Special Day Care Centre is a heartwarming and vital initiative that offers a safe, nurturing space for children with mental and physical disabilities in the township community. Many families face huge challenges due to limited resources, knowledge, and support systems – and Ithemba steps in to help bridge that gap.

Here, the children receive individual attention, basic education, and life skills training designed to foster greater independence. By learning to care for themselves and interact with others, these incredible kids gain confidence and valuable tools to navigate the world around them. Parents are also actively involved in the journey – gaining insights, practical tips, and a better understanding of how to support their children at home.

The journey of Ithemba began back in 1988 when three dedicated community members noticed the lack of opportunities for children with special needs. After speaking directly with parents in the township, the need for a support centre was crystal clear. The problems were big – lack of stimulation, development delays, and limited independence – but so was the determination to do something about it.

What began in a small hospital ward quickly outgrew its space, leading to the creation of a dedicated centre. Today, Ithemba proudly runs from a purpose-built facility complete with three classrooms, a therapy room, playground, kitchen, office space, and a garden where up to 44 children receive daily care and education. A team of loving teachers, assistants, cooks, and coordinators make it all happen.

The centre's mission is clear: promote mental well-being, equip children to live with dignity and independence, and raise awareness about disability and inclusion. Ithemba also regularly takes the children on local outings – whether it’s a visit to the beach or a fun community event – to break down stigmas and build understanding in society.

As a volunteer, you’ll become part of the Ithemba family. You’ll work closely with the children, teachers, and support staff – whether helping with daily activities, assisting in therapy sessions, supporting basic education or simply spending time giving attention and love where it’s needed most. Your energy and ideas are always welcome!

    🛠️ Program Needs

Ithemba operates as a registered NPO and depends on donations, parent contributions, and volunteer involvement to keep going strong. You can make a big impact, even before arriving, by helping out with much-needed supplies such as:

    • Kitchen supplies (utensils, cooking gas)

    • Craft and school materials (crayons, glue, paper, paint)

    • Toothbrushes and toothpaste

    • First aid items (bandages, antiseptics)

    • Garden tools, seeds, and soil

If you’re feeling inspired, fundraising ahead of your trip is a fantastic way to help. Every little bit counts – and the smiles of the children will show you just how much your support matters.
