    🐧 About the Program

Join the South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SANCCOB) in Port Elizabeth, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing and caring for sick or injured African Penguins—also called Jackass Penguins—and other marine birds like gannets, cormorants, and seagulls. SANCCOB plays a crucial role protecting the world’s largest African Penguin breeding colony on St Croix Island, just off Port Elizabeth’s coast.

This is the only centre locally equipped to collect and treat washed-up penguins, nurse them back to health with vitamins and food, and prepare them to be released back into Algoa Bay’s waters. Volunteers help these birds regain strength and independence, teaching them to fish again after recovery.

With only about 25,000 breeding pairs of African Penguins left worldwide—21,000 nearby in Algoa Bay—this program helps save a vital population. Beyond rescue, SANCCOB educates visitors, tourists, and school groups about these endangered birds and the rich marine life of Algoa Bay through interactive displays and programs.

Volunteers are essential in feeding, cleaning, maintaining enclosures, welcoming visitors, guiding tours, assisting rescues, and helping with releases.

    🤝 How Can I Help?

    Fundraising & Donations
Running a non-profit requires constant fundraising. Your participation includes a compulsory donation, but if you want to support further, just ask—we’ll help you with ideas and resources. Your time and energy make a huge difference!

    Schedule
The centre operates 365 days a year and needs volunteers year-round. You’ll work five days a week between Monday and Sunday, typically from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with breaks for lunch (1:00–2:00 PM) and tea. Weekend work is part of the schedule, balanced with weekdays off. Hours may shift in summer due to heat.

    Supervision
Our Volunteer Coordinators will pick you up on arrival, help you settle in, show you around Port Elizabeth, and organize your work schedule at SANCCOB. They also handle transport, shopping, and fun weekend outings. At the centre, a staff member supervises daily tasks and is your point of contact.

    🔒 Is South Africa Safe?

While South Africa has a reputation for safety concerns, many find it friendly and welcoming. However, it’s essential to stay aware and follow safety guidelines, especially in cities. Socioeconomic challenges contribute to some risks, but your host and coordinators prioritize your safety.

    Safety Tips:

    • Avoid walking alone or at night; use Uber or group transport.

    • Stay on busy roads where you’re visible to others.

    • Keep valuables hidden and avoid carrying backpacks on your stomach.

    • Be confident, know your route, and avoid distractions like phone use on the street.

    • Always follow additional safety advice from your project manager.

✅ What Will Be Expected From Me?

    Volunteering here requires:

    • Physical fitness to stand for full shifts and work outdoors.

    • Comfort with getting dirty and working in all weather conditions.

    • Ability to follow instructions, work both independently and in teams.

    • Compassion for seabirds and patience working with wild animals who may bite.

    • Reliability, accountability, and ability to work under pressure.

    • Minimum age of 18, up-to-date tetanus vaccination, and medical clearance if pregnant or allergic to animal dander or detergents.

This project is challenging but rewarding—your commitment is key to learning how to care for these birds safely and effectively.

    📋 Things to Consider

    Visa & Passport
Most visitors receive a free visa on arrival for up to 90 days; check your country’s requirements. Longer stays require pre-arranged visas. Your passport must have at least two free pages and be valid for six months beyond your departure date.

    Vaccinations
Port Elizabeth is malaria-free, though mosquitoes can be a nuisance in summer. Check with your doctor about other recommended vaccines before travel.

    Weather
The climate is moderate, with warm summers and cooler winters due to ocean currents. Bring layers to prepare for temperatures from 8°C in winter up to 40°C in summer.

    Insurance
Travel and medical insurance are essential—accidents can happen anywhere.

    🍻 Alcohol & Conduct

Alcohol is permitted only for volunteers 18 and over and only at the accommodation. We have a strict no-drug policy and no alcohol use on the project site. Volunteers working with children affected by alcoholism must be responsible—any signs of intoxication will not be tolerated.
