    Om programmet

    Project:

This project includes a variety of activities focused on soil restoration and environmental sustainability. Worldwide Friends began restoring this site in 2023 after it had been abandoned for several years, transforming it into a welcoming home and learning environment.

The main focus of the project is soilwork and environmental restoration — combating erosion, nourishing the land with organic waste, and planting trees to support long-term revegetation. The site covers 300 hectares within a protected Geopark that features several hiking trails. We also monitor tree plantations from previous years and collaborate with the local municipality to maintain hiking paths and nearby protected areas.

Greenhouse and agriculture-related tasks may also be part of the work but are secondary to the main goal of restoring and protecting the local environment.

When weather conditions are not suitable for outdoor work, volunteers will help with renovation and maintenance tasks, such as painting or small repairs inside the house.

    Seasonal Focus:

    • March to April: Renovation activities

    • April to September: Soil work and environmental restoration

    • October to February: Renovation activities

Please note that tasks and workshops may vary depending on the season, project needs, and weather conditions. Volunteers should be ready for physical, outdoor work and changing weather — as we say in Iceland: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes!”

This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges. Working hours are on average 6-7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

    Participants:

If you are healthy, motivated, and eager to work alongside a local project team, we’ll be happy to welcome you on board! In general, participants should be at least 18 years old. There is no maximum age limit for most of our workcamps, and we encourage anyone with enthusiasm for community and environmental work to join.

Typically, the age range of volunteers is 18 to 30 years old, but older participants with a positive attitude and a willingness to contribute are equally welcome.

    Camp leaders:

Each camp is guided by one or more camp leaders, depending on the group size. The leaders serve as the vital link between the hosting community and the group of volunteers. They help coordinate daily tasks, organize free-time activities and excursions, manage shopping and house chores, and oversee cooking sessions.

While they take on additional responsibilities to ensure the smooth running of the camp, camp leaders are equal members of the team, working alongside volunteers and sharing in the experience.

Most of our camp leaders come from different countries, as we proudly welcome and collaborate with international leaders from partner organizations who bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our projects.

    What to Pack

Icelandic weather is famously unpredictable, so it’s important to be prepared for all conditions — sun, rain, wind, and even snow! Here’s what you should bring:

    • Waterproof hiking boots – essential for outdoor work and uneven terrain.

    • Warm and waterproof clothing – layers are key for staying comfortable outdoors.

    • Swimsuit and towel – don’t miss Iceland’s traditional pools and hot springs!

    • Indoor shoes or slippers – shoes are not worn inside the houses.

    • Raincoat or windbreaker – weather changes quickly, even in summer.

    • Personal medication & toiletries – bring any necessary prescriptions or essentials.

    • Items from your country – food, photos, or small souvenirs for intercultural evenings.

    • Hairdryer (optional) – useful, but not required.

    • Cash (ISK or EUR) – for optional excursions or personal expenses.

    • Baggage allowance: One large suitcase and one small carry-on.

We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food, including whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. To help reduce our carbon footprint, we focus on sustainable meals and often encourage volunteers to explore plant-based dishes.

    • Breakfast is included and self-serve

    • Lunch and Dinner are group activities, giving everyone a chance to cook and connect

Since we bake our own bread, feel free to share any special crusty bread recipes from home!

Note: Alcohol consumption is permitted on this project.
