    This service-learning initiative offers medical support to residents who require healthcare services. Participants will have the chance to collaborate with local healthcare professionals, understand the health challenges faced by the community, and acquire essential skills and knowledge for future careers in the healthcare sector. You will gain practical experience by performing ECGs and ultrasounds, administering vaccines, dressing wounds, conducting vision tests, and more. 

    This program is tailored for medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, clinical officers, lab technicians, pharmacists, caregivers, and consultants, who aim to serve underprivileged communities, as well as pre-med students seeking initial exposure to a medical career and valuable experience before entering university or the healthcare field. There is a steady need for healthcare providers and childcare professionals in the communities we support. Join us to gain volunteer experience in humanitarian efforts. Students or interns without prior medical experience will have the opportunity to learn by observing and assisting doctors on-site through activities such as watching procedures, managing office tasks, and recording health data.

    Professionals can take on roles such as assistant doctors, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, or midwives, or perform basic procedures at our clinic. This includes patient consultations, diagnostic tests, surgeries, treatment plans, and routine checkups like measuring blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight. You will help with dressing and suturing wounds. You will work in relevant departments (e.g., gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics) to support patient care and staff. Assist in hospital laboratories or counseling units, which may involve organizing data or helping with testing procedures. You will aid in the organization and distribution of medications and help patients navigate from one service point to another within a hospital or clinic.


    Below are some of our projects to choose from to assist 


    1. UCESCO Africa Free Annual Medical Camp / Outreach Health Campaigns
    We periodically run free medical camps across the poor communities we are serving. We focus on at any given time are determined by the communities with the highest need. The more volunteers we recruit, the more outreach initiatives the local team can implement, allowing us to assist additional need communities. We engage a local doctor to lead these campaigns and oversee the volunteers. Our team consistently provides the necessary medical supplies and equipment. Additionally, an interpreter is hired to assist local medical volunteers in overcoming language barriers when communicating with patients.

    What it does:
    The Annual Free Medical Camp provides essential medical services, including general checkups, dental care, maternal health, mental health consultations, and medication.

    Who it serves:
    Children, adults, the elderly, and individuals who lack access to basic healthcare.

    Main challenges:
    Medication shortages and the need for more medical equipment.

    2. Medical Clinic 
    Participants have the opportunity to collaborate with a local physician here. Medical volunteers will help conduct basic health assessments for members of the local community. Typically, the doctor treats up to 50 patients each day. The clinic operates in both the morning and late evening, generally for about 2-3 hours per session. This may provide a chance for hands-on involvement if volunteers decide to pursue such an opportunity. The clinic offers accessible healthcare to vulnerable families in Kibera.

    Main needs include:

    1. Medicines
    2. Non-pharmaceutical disposables
    3. Sanitary products
    3. Shadowing in a Hospital Environment 
    Our network includes various clinics. Volunteers will have the chance to shadow in different clinic departments. Here, they may perform basic health assessments on patients during the doctor's rounds. Common departments where volunteers in Kenya will be assigned include the Clinic, ultrasound, pediatrics, Pharmacy, Dental, ophthalmology, gynecology, laboratory, and non-urgent care. You may also have the opportunity to observe surgeries. However, this occurs on an ad hoc basis. You will be informed a day in advance or even on the same day once the surgeries are confirmed. Naturally, we cannot assure that specific surgeries will occur. Regardless, it can be a truly enlightening experience to witness the differences between clinics in Kenya and those in your home country.

    4. Community Visits 
    Volunteers will join Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in performing various health checks throughout different community environments. For instance, they may visit local schools to carry out health screenings for students. Volunteers often have the opportunity to provide basic first aid to the children. Furthermore, visits to care homes within the community are carried out to perform health screenings on the more vulnerable and elderly individuals. In this context, volunteers can offer their assistance by helping with cooking and meal preparation for the residents. The primary goal of the local team is to support the underprivileged community to the best of their ability.

    5. Student Elective Opportunities 

    We offer specialized elective placements for students. Those seeking a distinctive overseas elective experience can achieve this through our organization. Gain firsthand knowledge from health professionals in unparalleled medical environments. As a medical volunteer, you can indicate your preferred clinical elective during the online application process. Be sure to emphasize your elective experience, as this will necessitate official approval and a selective license from the Ministry of Health. Our team will ensure that all arrangements are made for your elective in our country.

    Medical - Acquire hands-on medical experience and gain insights during your medical elective. Collaborate with local physicians in outreach initiatives aimed at assisting some of the most disadvantaged communities. Establish cultural ties and learn directly from doctors while taking an active role in supporting health campaigns in slum areas. Observe clinics and consultations, and perform basic health assessments as we deliver free medical services to slum populations. Witness surgical procedures and evaluate hospital standards compared to those at home. Engage directly at clinics in this exceptional medical elective opportunity.

    Nursing - Your nursing elective offers a diverse range of experiences. For instance, you will shadow nurses in hospitals, aid in outreach medical camps, and support doctors with health assessments at community clinics. During your nursing placement, you will gain insights from healthcare professionals regarding medical practices in our country. Additionally, you will learn about the common diseases affecting the local population. Explore various departments, including pediatrics, emergency care, and neurology, ensuring that your nursing elective is truly memorable!


    6. Group Medical Trips - 

    We offer cost-effective group journeys for educational institutions and organizations globally. Starting at just 950 Euros per person (with group leaders coming at no cost), our comprehensive 15-day itinerary is meticulously planned, all-inclusive, and guided by our skilled team. Organizing international trips for sizable groups requires extensive preparation. We truly excel in the realm of group overseas expeditions, delivering unique group travel experiences while catering to large student groups with full board arrangements. We assure you of providing reliable and thoroughly vetted medical project environments that offer valuable insights, exposure, and educational experiences for students.


    As you get ready to embark on your volunteer journey, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the following essential guidelines.

    1. Kenyan Currency, Mobile Phones, and Internet Access

    • Having a mobile phone will enable you to stay in touch with your family and friends. Local SIM cards are available, with Safaricom being the predominant provider. A SIM card can be purchased for approximately 1 US Dollar, offering competitive rates. The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling, and you can exchange money at malls or withdraw cash from ATMs. U.S. dollars are accepted for entrance fees at National Parks. 
    • Acquiring a local SIM card enables you to access M-Pesa, a popular and user-friendly mobile payment platform in Kenya. This facilitates seamless transactions, whether in markets, for transport fares, or even in remote villages across Kenya, eliminating the need to carry cash. This is particularly beneficial as taxi drivers often claim they lack change and may retain excess amounts. With M-Pesa, you can pay the exact fare required, unless you choose to provide a tip. Additionally, you can top up your M-Pesa account using services such as Wise.
    • Internet access is available via Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, and public areas such as cafes and shopping centers. Alternatively, modem sticks for laptops can be purchased for additional connectivity options.
    2. Packing Essentials (Required items): 
    • eTA-Visa, which can be obtained via this link (https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de/evisa)  
    • Passport (ensure it is valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry),  
    • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate,  
    • credit card and/or cash,  
    • power adapter for local outlets.  
    • Recommended items: personal toiletries, travel pillow, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, durable footwear or shoes suitable for outdoor use, fanny pack, compact power bank, hairdryer, and clothing suitable for the weather (check the forecast before your arrival, as conditions may vary 
    3. What can you expect on your first day with UCESCO
    • Upon your arrival, a member of the UCESCO team will meet you at the airport, and communication will be facilitated via WhatsApp. Your orientation is scheduled for the first weekday at the UCESCO office. If you arrive during the weekend, we can arrange a brief city tour or a one- to two-day safari; however, your first visit to the project will occur on Monday. The Volunteer coordinator, will introduce you to the organization and its various initiatives, so feel free to ask her any questions you may have. You will have the opportunity to tour some of our projects on the ground, with the day concluding around 2 PM. Following this, you may choose to visit the mall to acquire a SIM card (a passport is required) and set up an M-Pesa account.

    4. Exploration Opportunities (Tours and Safaris)

    • UCESCO-AFRICA invites you to delve into the vibrant lifestyle and culture of Kenya. If you are interested in safaris or travel experiences, our affiliated company, Meaningful Tours and Travel, provides budget-friendly safari options, hotel bookings, flight arrangements, and travel insurance. 
    • Weekends are an ideal time for our volunteers to uncover the marvels of our nation through safaris. For trips outside Nairobi, such as to Masai Mara or Samburu, we recommend a minimum stay of two nights and three days (Friday to Sunday) to fully enjoy the experience. In contrast, safaris within or close to Nairobi can be completed in one or two days, typically over the weekend. Our organization is dedicated to ensuring you have sufficient time to explore Kenya, as we believe experiencing the rich lifestyle and culture of Africa is vital during your visit.

    Volunteer activities are conducted each morning, followed by a range of optional afternoon activities, including sports, traditional Kenyan dance classes, and cooking lessons. Participation in these activities is contingent upon the interest of the volunteers. Most volunteers prefer short tours around the city  (Museums and parks), visiting malls, open-air markets (Maasai market), Live bands and local clubs, nature trekking, and then returning home to relax and prepare for the next day's engagements.

    A typical daily schedule may be outlined as follows, with potential minor adjustments:

    • 8:30 a.m. - A nutritious and appetizing breakfast is provided.  
    • 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. - Volunteer work as previously detailed.  
    • 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Optional afternoon leisure activities as mentioned.  
    • 3:30 p.m. - Time to unwind and prepare to return home.  
    • 8:00 p.m. - Dinner is served.

    • The wildlife of Kenya serves as the primary draw for tourists exploring Africa, largely due to the remarkable variety of animals and birds that can be observed during a safari, a diversity that is unparalleled in many other countries. With its rich ecosystem, Kenya is home to around 400 species of mammals and an even greater number of bird species, providing an exceptional experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can expect to encounter some of the most iconic safari animals, including the Big Cats, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and many others.  
    • Animals are categorized into mammals, featuring the renowned Big Five—lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo—as well as the Big Nine, which includes additional animals that are also highly sought after during safari excursions in Kenya. These include the cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus, and the commonly seen zebra. Many of our volunteers inquire about the best locations in Kenya to view all of the Big Nine. The ideal approach is to explore at least 2 to 3 different parks during your safari, with the Masai Mara National Reserve being one of the few locations where all of the Big Nine can potentially be spotted.

    All volunteers should arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. This is the main international airport in Kenya and the designated pickup location for all incoming volunteers.

    UCESCO Africa provides a reliable airport pickup service for all volunteers upon arrival.

    • A member of our team or trusted driver will be waiting for you at the arrivals area
    • You will be welcomed with a sign displaying your name or UCESCO Africa logo
    • The driver will assist you with your luggage and transport you safely to your accommodation

    To ensure a smooth pickup, please send us the following details at least 72 hours before arrival:

    • Full name
    • Flight number
    • Airline name
    • Arrival date and time

    Once you land:

    • Connect to airport Wi-Fi or use roaming services
    • Our team will share a local contact number and WhatsApp details before your arrival
    • In case of any delays or issues, please notify us immediately

    N/B Just to remind you, sometimes luggage delays and we have seen our volunteer having a hard time as they are waiting for their luggage for three days, make sure at least the back bag/ the small bag you will be walking with, have all the basic items, and at least few clothes to change in case you luggage delays, At least make sure you can survive for two to three days but not always luggage delays but it happens. it's just a caution because we have seen volunteer forced to go the the mall to buy a few clothes to survive as they are waiting for their luggage to arrive, which is an unnecessary expense.

    Volunteers stay in a cozy, shared volunteer house located within a friendly and secure community. The house offers a warm, family-like atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow volunteers from around the world.

    Rooms are shared (typically 2–4 people per room with your own bed) and are furnished with comfortable beds, clean bedding, and secure storage for your belongings. Separate arrangements can be made for couples, families, or those requesting additional privacy.

    You will enjoy freshly prepared, home-cooked meals, offering a mix of local Kenyan cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice.

    The house includes:

    • Clean shared bathrooms with running water
    • A comfortable common lounge area for relaxing and socializing
    • Access to Wi-Fi
    • Laundry services or facilities
    • 24/7 support from our local team

    Located within accessible distance to project sites, the accommodation allows for easy daily commutes while also giving you a chance to experience authentic local life and culture.

    Volunteers are provided with two meals per day:

    • Breakfast – Light and energizing (tea, coffee, bread, eggs, fruits, cereals

    • Dinner – Warm, home-cooked meals enjoyed together at the volunteer house

    Meals are prepared by our experienced local cooks using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

    Our menu offers a blend of traditional Kenyan dishes and familiar international meals. Volunteers will have the opportunity to enjoy local favorites such as:

    • Ugali (maize meal staple)

    • Rice and beans

    • Chapati

    • Fresh vegetables and stews

    • Seasonal tropical fruits

    We also incorporate simple international options to ensure comfort and variety.

    We strive to accommodate dietary needs whenever possible, including:

You will have the opportunity to connect with new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

    Transportation

    "'Matatus''  is our local name, meaning public transport vehicles which serve as the predominant mode of public transport in Kenya. After spending a few days acclimating to your surroundings, you may wish to explore the local area, visit supermarkets, or access ATMs. Additionally, public transport may be necessary to reach your placement project. During your initial days, a member of the Kenyan team will accompany you until you feel comfortable navigating the routes independently. In Nairobi, Minbus and Matatus are widely used and often feature vibrant decorations, including neon lights and sound systems, they are affordable and enjoyable ways to travel. Alternatively, you may choose to utilize the Uber or Bolt applications for taxi services. These platforms are prevalent in Nairobi and are particularly safe for newcomers who may be unfamiliar with local pricing and destinations; thus, using Uber is highly recommended.
