    Based on a remote island in Indonesia’s Gita Nada Marine Protected Area, this unique program offers volunteers the chance to actively contribute to the protection and restoration of critical marine ecosystems. As part of our small, passionate team, you’ll receive full training and support to participate in real-world conservation projects, from coral reef restoration to turtle monitoring and mangrove reforestation.

    Our program is designed to be flexible. Whether you're passionate about marine science, interested in sustainability, or simply want to give back during your travels, we’ll tailor your experience to your interests, skills, and comfort level.

    What You'll Be Doing:

    As a Marine Conservation & Restoration Assistant, you may take part in:

    • Reef and Seagrass Health Monitoring
      Learn field survey techniques and help collect long-term ecological data to support marine ecosystem health assessments.

    • Turtle Identification and Monitoring
      Assist with underwater photography and identification of individual turtles to contribute to a growing database used by local authorities and NGOs.

    • Shark and Megafauna Monitoring
      Record sightings of reef sharks, rays, and other large marine species to help monitor population trends and ecosystem dynamics.

    • Coral Reef Restoration
      Help restore degraded reef areas by building and deploying artificial reef structures, reintroducing coral fragments, and maintaining existing restoration sites.

    • Mangrove Reforestation
      Support coastal resilience by planting and caring for native mangrove species during community-led restoration events.

    • Plastic Collection and Waste Reduction
      Join regular beach and underwater clean-ups to help reduce marine debris, and support local waste separation and recycling efforts.

    All volunteers receive the necessary theoretical and practical training (including SCUBA certification if needed) to safely and confidently contribute to our conservation efforts. No prior experience is required.

    Monday - Arrival and Orientation (Dry Day)​

    Upon arrival, you'll receive a tour of our site and be shown to your accommodation to settle in.​

    • Before 12:30 PM Arrival: Join us for lunch, followed by an afternoon orientation session.​

    • After 2:30 PM Arrival: Orientation will take place on Tuesday morning.​

    We recommend arriving by or before 2:30 PM to maximise your initial experience.


    ​Tuesday to Saturday - Conservation Acitivites 

    Each day is structured to provide a balance of hands-on conservation work and educational sessions:​

    • Morning Activities (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM): Lectures, conservation and survey dives, artificial reef building, data analysis, mangrove seed collection and planting, beach cleans.​

    • Lunch (1:00 PM): A communal meal to recharge and connect.​

    • Afternoon Activities (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Continuation of morning conservation activities.​

    Activities are tailored to your interests and may include additional tasks based on current project needs.


    Sunday - Rest and Recreation

    Sundays are reserved for relaxation and community bonding:​

    • Day: One staff lead fun dive, buddy diving on our House Reef, rest, explore or leisure activities.​

    • Evening: Enjoy a more western dinner (including pizza, homemade burgers, lasagna, or a traditional Sunday roast) accommodating meat-eaters, vegetarians, and vegans.​


    Evenings

    Evenings are yours to unwind or engage in community activities:​

    • Movie nights on the big screen​

    • Bonfires with marshmallow toasting​

    • Board and card game sessions​

    • Documentary viewings​


    Meals and Dietary Requirements

    We provide three nutritious meals daily:​

    • Breakfast: 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM​

    • Lunch: 1:00 PM​

    • Dinner: 6:00 PM​

    Our kitchen caters to vegetarians, vegans, and most dietary intolerances. Please discuss any specific dietary requirements or allergies with us prior to booking to ensure we can accommodate your needs.

    Though we’re tucked away in a peaceful, secluded corner of Lombok, there’s still plenty to keep you entertained during your free time. The atmosphere here is laid-back and serene, offering the perfect opportunity to unwind or engage in activities at your own pace, far from the crowds of the northern Gili Islands.

    At SORCE, you can swim, snorkel, or dive right off the beach, enjoy our homemade Jungle Gym, or practice yoga on the beach while taking in the tranquil surroundings. For a more relaxed day, lounge in a hammock or get lost in a book. We also have board and card games, a movie projector for film nights, and a cozy bonfire area where you can enjoy evenings under the stars.

    If you’re in the mood for something more active, try our paddleboards and kayaks, available for rent, or explore the island by bike, we can help you arrange bike rentals for easy travel around the area. You can also rent a scooter or hire a car and driver for trips further afield.

    For those looking to explore beyond the local area, there’s plenty to do! Take a trip to the famous Desert Point surf spot, visit the nearby Gili Islands, or explore local villages and restaurants. We’re about a two-hour drive from Mataram and Kuta, with Mount Rinjani only a few hours away for those interested in hiking or enjoying the mountain scenery and waterfalls.

    Whether you want to unwind in our peaceful setting or venture out for some adventure, there’s always something to do to make the most of your free time!

    To participate in the Marine Conservation program, you must have an Open Water Scuba Dive Certification (PADI or equivalent), we also recommend Advanced Open water Certification (though it is not mandatory). Don’t worry if you are not qualified you can get certified while you are here!

    We do recommend a minimum of 2-4 weeks to get the most out of your stay. 

    Please note that for stays longer than 6 weeks or shorter than 2 weeks we have separate Ts and Cs so please contact us to request further information. Please note, it is possible to book a shorter stay and then extend at a later date (subject to availability).

    Your contribution directly supports the running of our remote, community-led facility and helps us continue our vital conservation work. Every fee goes back into:

    • Covering your accommodation in our traditional bamboo huts

    • Three nutritious meals per day, including breakfast options and a fruit buffet

    • Fresh drinking water, tea, and coffee

    • Salaries for our dedicated local team who support you throughout your stay

    • All project-related materials and equipment

    • Fuel for boats used in research and fieldwork

    • Full theoretical and practical training in conservation and research methods

    • 24/7 in-country support throughout your stay

    • Use of core diving equipment: BCD, regulator, tanks, weights, and weight belt*

    * Please bring your own mask, fins, dive computer, and waterwear (wetsuit or rash guard). If you don’t have a dive computer, we have a limited number available to rent for a small additional fee.

    We do recommend a minimum stay of 2–4 weeks to get the most out of your time with us. For stays shorter than 2 weeks or longer than 6 weeks, we have specific terms and conditions—just get in touch for more information. You’re also welcome to start with a shorter stay and extend later, depending on availability.

    We understand that every body is different—if you require larger portion sizes or have specific dietary needs, this can usually be arranged for a small extra cost. We’re always happy to help you feel comfortable and supported during your stay.

    Internet:

    There is typically a 4G internet signal where we are located. Internet use can be secured by purchasing a local sim-card to use in your device and topping up a monthly data package for a minimal cost. We do not have our own Wi-Fi, so please ensure that the retailer of the sim card installs it for you so that you can ensure it works in your phone before leaving with it.

    Experience comfort and sustainability in our beautifully designed bamboo huts, each built using traditional methods and offering a serene, eco-friendly living space. Each hut is home to two rooms, with a shared balcony area perfect for enjoying the view and the fresh island air.

    Inside each room, you’ll find:

    • A large bamboo bed with a sprung mattress, pillow, and fresh cotton bedding (changed weekly)

    • A mosquito net to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep

    • A handmade bedside table for your personal items

    • A fan for a cool breeze during warm evenings

    • A small clothes rail and a bamboo rack for your belongings

    • Blackout curtains on both windows and doors to give you privacy and help keep your room cool

    We offer single rooms as standard, but if you're travelling with a friend or partner, we can provide double/twin rooms upon request.

    For your convenience, there is an external shower and toilet block with private cubicles that are available for all guests to use.

    Stay in comfort while being surrounded by nature, with everything you need for a restful and rejuvenating stay!

    We provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner, 7 days a week, all lovingly prepared by our local cooks. Meals are a mix of local Indonesian dishes and Western favourites, using fresh, locally grown ingredients wherever possible.

    Most meals are vegetarian, featuring rice or noodles with beans and vegetables, with meat options (chicken or beef) served a couple of times a week. There’s always a tofu or tempeh version for vegetarians. We can easily cater for vegetarians and vegans, and with enough notice we’ll do our best to accommodate other dietary needs.

    If you prefer more meat in your diet or larger portions, that’s no problem. We offer upgraded meal options for a small additional fee. Everyone’s body and diet are different, and we want to make sure you’re happy and well-fed.

    Breakfast is served daily and includes a choice of:

    • Porridge
    • Toast with jam, homemade peanut butter (sugar-free or regular), or honey
    • Crepes with sugar and lime
    • Plus, there's always a mini fruit buffet featuring seasonal local fruits

    Additional breakfast options are available at a small extra cost if you fancy mixing it up!

    Every Sunday Funday, we treat everyone to a rotating special dinner each week:

    • Pizza
    • Homemade burgers & chips
    • Lasagne with garlic bread & salad
    • Roast dinner with Yorkshire puddings

    We also have a small tuck shop where you can pick up drinks, snacks, and local chocolate treats. If you’re craving something a bit different, our in-house restaurant offers an all-day menu with snacks, sweet treats, and alternative meals, all available for an additional fee.

    Start Dates & Arrival Details

    Our programs run year-round, with Monday as the designated arrival and departure day. We kindly ask that all participants aim to arrive at our facility by 2:30 PM at the latest on the Monday your expedition begins. This allows time for orientation and settling in before dinner.

    Please note: If you arrive after 2:30 PM, orientation will take place the following morning. This may limit the activities you can join during your first few days, so we strongly recommend arriving earlier in the day.

    Dive Courses

    If you’re not yet a certified diver, no problem! You’ll need to complete your Open Water Diver certification before participating in any underwater activities. This course takes a minimum of four days and is delivered by our trusted dive instructor right here on site. Let us know if this is something that you would be interested in, before your arrival.

    Duration

    VolunteerWorld expeditions can be booked for up to six weeks. If you fall in love with island life (and many do!), longer stays may be arranged—just let us know.

    Getting Here

    The nearest airport is Lombok International Airport (LOP). We can arrange a trusted local driver to pick you up and bring you to our boat access point—a journey of around 1.5 hours by car, followed by a 10-minute boat ride to our facility.
    This transfer costs approximately £25 / $30, which can be paid directly to your driver.

    Already in Indonesia? No worries! If you're travelling by boat, whether from Bali, Bangsal (Gilis Port), Gili Gede (the closest port to us) or Lembar (Lombok’s main port), we can help arrange transport from your arrival point to our boat pickup. Just let us know your travel plans, and we’ll advise on the best route and associated costs.

    Once your booking is confirmed, we’ll send you a comprehensive Welcome Pack via email. This includes all the info you’ll need to plan your trip: visa requirements, packing tips, travel advice, and everything else to make your experience smooth and enjoyable from the moment you step off the plane.
