    About The Placement

Join our community plastics recycling team and help turn waste into a resource. You’ll organise and take part in community clean-ups, set up local collection points to support an overstretched rural waste service, and transform collected plastics into eco-bricks for use in schools and community projects such as seating, greenhouses and small structures.

Alongside the hands-on work, you’ll also join our education campaign, visiting schools and community groups to show how plastic waste harms health and the environment and why it’s so important to reuse and recycle.

    Why This Placement Matters

Single-use plastics are a major issue in Ghana and across West Africa. With many families living below the poverty line, products are sold in small sachets or disposable packaging to keep prices low. Awareness of the long-term environmental and health impacts is still limited, particularly in rural areas.

Plastic waste clogs open drains and gutters, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increasing the risk of malaria for the most vulnerable. It also piles up in informal dumps, degrading local wildlife habitats and damaging fragile ecosystems.

We’re tackling this problem on two fronts:

    • Immediate action through clean-ups, collection points and eco-brick production.

    • Long-term change through education, upcycling and showing communities the value of reducing and reusing waste.

By volunteering, you help protect both people and nature while creating practical items for local schools and projects from what would otherwise be litter.

    What's Included

    • Shared volunteer accommodation in a modern house in semi-rural Kwahu with views of surrounding forests. Utilities such as electricity, running water, and kitchen facilities are provided.

    • Airport pickup on arrival.

    • Pre-departure support and access to our volunteer portal.

    • 24/7 in-country support, with a local team member living on-site or nearby depending on volunteer numbers.

Your contribution directly sustains this support structure, enabling us to employ local staff and ensure volunteers have safe, comfortable living conditions.

    Getting to Your Placement

Most plastics activities take place in and around Abetifi. Volunteers generally use shared taxis to travel to the workshop and clean-up sites, which are readily available and affordable. Our team will guide you on routes, group transport, and local tips. After projects, volunteers can easily reach town to shop, meet friends, or explore the area.

    Your Role

    Your week will typically include:

    • Community clean-ups and litter picks at set locations.

    • Eco-brick production at the volunteer house or workshop.

    • Upcycling projects — helping research and trial new products made from waste plastics for schools or community spaces.

    • Education sessions — delivering simple demonstrations or assemblies on waste management and recycling at local schools or community groups (optional).

The placement is flexible, and we’ll adjust your timetable to suit your interests. You can also combine this with our other conservation or farming programmes if you wish.

    Who You’ll Be Working With

You’ll work alongside fellow volunteers, our support team and local community members. At times you may also work independently on set tasks. A member of our volunteer support team will visit you periodically after the initial introduction to ensure you’re settled and making an impact.

    Volunteer Expectations

We ask for enthusiasm, empathy and a willingness to get stuck in. Clean-up days can be tiring in the heat and humidity, but your effort makes a visible difference. No specific qualifications are required; we’ll discuss your interests at orientation and match you with suitable tasks.

We expect volunteers to attend placements Monday to Friday (with occasional flexibility for travel). This continuity ensures the communities we serve can rely on our support.

    Our Commitment to You

We’re on hand any time to support you — whether you’d like help adjusting your timetable, trying another project, or planning weekend travel. Our local team at the volunteer house will also share insights on the area and Ghanaian life so you soon feel at home.

    What to Bring

Bring at least one strong pair of shoes and full-length trousers or tracksuit bottoms for clean-up days. If you have experience in upcycling, bring your plans or ideas — we can share them with local communities or develop them into fundraising products. Professional litter-picking tools or lightweight gloves are also useful, as they’re hard to source locally.

    During School Holidays

Apart from the outreach sessions in schools, the plastics recycling work continues as normal during school holidays. In fact, the free time often allows us to run larger clean-ups or workshops with community groups.

    • In their free time, volunteers are free to go shopping in the local markets, return to the volunteer house or visit the local swimming pools.

This is just an example day and a flexibility to workload and timings is a crucial skill for a successful volunteer trip. Increasing workload to lengthen your day is possible, you just need to communicate with your in country support team.

    Tjenester på stedet

Atlas Volunteer's aim is to provide low cost, meaningful volunteer placements abroad. By keeping our program fees affordable, we hope for helping hands from across the world to be able to come and help as well as experience Ghana no matter their financial situation.

Our program fees cover the core foundation of your program which are:
    • Registration Fee
    • Airport Collection
    • Volunteer House Accommodation
    • Local Support Staff
    • Volunteer House Utility Bills; Tap Water, Cooking Gas and Electricity
    • Organisation running costs, both online and in country.
    • Marketing & Introduction Commissions
    • Social Funds - When possible we use part of our fees for community development such as; sponsoring of the children's sports academy, mobile library, social enterprises, plastics workshop, farm expansions, reforestation site and seedlings, conservation site maintenance and expansion, scholarship school fees, school materials and maintenance.
    In addition to your core program fees, there will also be some other items you need to consider to cover your complete trip. We have setup our program in this way as we believe that each of our volunteers' trips should be different and personalised to their stay. Due to this, we decided not to choose a blanket price for transport or food for example where this would perhaps increase the fees unnecessarily for volunteers travelling a shorter distance or that eat certain diets. These optional items to consider are;
    • Daily Transport to Projects (Approximately $2-3 as of September 2025 from Aduamoah to Abetifi)
    • Food (Volunteers usually advise $5-6 per day but it's possible to spend less or more depending on if cooking at home or eating out)
    • Drinking Water (Approximately 8 cedis for 30 x 500ml filtered water sachets)
    • Internet / Data (Most of the year we have wifi tickets available which are approximately $15 for a month)

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Kotoka International Airport

Your program fee includes a meet-and-greet airport collection from Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra. Collections are usually scheduled after the final flight of the day — typically between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm GMT.

We recommend booking your flight to arrive on your assigned Sunday start date. If you’re already in Ghana before your start date, we can also collect you from a hotel in Accra, provided you’re flexible on the exact pick-up time. If your flight arrives before 5:00 pm, you’re welcome to wait at the airport until the scheduled collection later in the day.

On arrival, a member of our local team will be waiting just outside the arrivals hall holding a sign with the Atlas logo and your name. They’ll greet you warmly and accompany you — along with any other incoming volunteers — directly to the volunteer house to meet the rest of the team.

Most volunteers travel by Uber and then an air-conditioned bus with our support staff to the Eastern Region. The journey takes roughly 3–4 hours depending on Accra traffic. Depending on the time of day and group size, we may instead arrange a taxi or private minibus to ensure a smooth transfer.

    Need a Different Pick-Up Time?
If you’d like to arrange an airport collection outside the scheduled window or on a different day, we can organise a private transfer for you for an additional fee.

    Indkvartering

Volunteers live together in shared accommodation in the Abetifi district of Ghana along with our support team in house. The house is based in a quiet town where you are within walking distance to local shops, street vendors and taxi routes - all whilst being able to enjoy the beautiful surrounding views of the rainforest and mountains.

    Bedrooms -
Bedrooms are shared usually between 2 - 4 people. Most bedrooms are supplied with a bunk bed. All doors and windows in the house are covered by mosquito netting or covered completely however you are more than welcome to bring a mosquito net for your bed although usually not necessary.

    Bathrooms -
There are basic bathrooms in the accommodation with individual WCs and shower rooms. Most of the time (but not always!) we have the benefit of running water which is a local luxury so showers and toilets will work as normal. We ask to consider others when using the water as it's a valuable commodity in Ghana.

    Kitchen -
We have a basic kitchen available in the volunteer house for you to use throughout the day. The basics of Fridge/Freezer, Gas stove, Kettle and Microwaves are supplied.
It is a self catered placement however plenty of food stuffs can be bought from the market such as bread, rice, pasta and many fresh ingredients.
We also have connections with local people in the town who will be able to prepare your meals or teach you how to cook local dishes.

    Living Room -
There is a large living room with sofas, TV and a dining set for use by the volunteers. Evenings are often spent in here and volunteers are welcome to bring DVDs or memory drives with movies to watch although local television channels are provided.

    Outdoor -
The house circles around a large outside compound where volunteers usually spend their afternoons and evenings eating outside, catching up with the other volunteers and group activities such as games nights.

    Store Room -
We have a small store room where we keep left over teaching materials and resources for new volunteers to use. You are invited to leave any items you may not use here for the next person to continue the flow. Master copies of activity sheets or lesson plans are a key item we hope to see keep growing in the store.
