    Om programmet

Chronic underdevelopment in Uganda is complex. Remote rural living, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a subsistence economy, and limited local services can leave families dependent on hand-outs, with higher rates of malnutrition and fewer education options. In many villages, there are limited ways to raise funds beyond subsistence living. That is why The Real Uganda builds long-term relationships with local communities to support sustainable solutions through start-up funds, shared knowledge, and steady motivation.

    About the program

Do you enjoy talking with people and sharing information in a clear, creative way? Do you want to understand public health in Uganda beyond what you read online? This program places volunteers alongside local counselors and health workers in rural communities, including remote areas.

    What you will do

You will visit schools and communities and talk about topics that affect daily life. You will help plan and run small seminars and discussions on subjects such as:

    • sanitation and clean water habits

    • household and personal hygiene

    • nutrition

    • malaria prevention

    • sex education

    • HIV prevention and AIDS care

Basic training and education materials are available on site. If you have useful handouts, activities, or teaching tools, you are welcome to bring them too.

    Clinic and maternity support

Some placements include time in clinics or maternity hospitals. You may support conversations with women and girls about safe sex, family planning, maternal and child health, and nutrition. Depending on the placement, you may also observe or assist with non-clinical support tasks connected to the lab or pharmacy, guided by local staff.

    Daily life and travel

This program can be physically demanding. You may walk long distances in the sun, so bring a hat and comfortable walking shoes. In many areas, volunteers travel by motorcycle (as a passenger) to reach villages and outreach sites.

    Accommodation and overnights

You will have a private room at your host organization as your base. All locations have electricity. Some have running water. If outreach work takes you to nearby villages, you will commute by motorcycle. If an outreach lasts more than one day, you will camp in the village with local staff.

    Who this is for

This program is a strong fit if you are confident speaking with groups, curious about health and community work, and ready for a real rural experience in Uganda.

The Real Uganda also encourages volunteers to visit each other at their placements. You learn more when you see different community projects and how local teams lead their work. We share volunteer contact details so you can connect before and after arrival.

Besides the Volunteer World commission, our fees cover:

    • online support from me, while you prepare for Uganda
    • pickup at Entebbe International Airport
    • first night hotel stay
    • in-country orientation, again - with me
    • transportation to your placement

    • a donation to the organization with which you are placed.

Program fees do not include airline tickets, travel insurance, a tourist visa, vaccinations, drinking water, leisure travel, or medical services. We can help you plan and arrange these items.

Your program fee covers the basic expenses listed above. It also helps support our Ugandan partner organizations so they can keep running their work in their communities. It helps The Real Uganda:

    • monitor partner progress and program quality

    • support and guide current volunteers while they are here

    • recruit new volunteers who are a good fit for Uganda and for each placement

Because of this, we can keep partnering with strong local development programs and make sure volunteers are supported throughout their stay, so your time in Uganda has real value for you and for the community.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Entebbe International Airport

Volunteers should arrive around the 1st or the 15th of the month you start volunteering. You will fly into Entebbe International Airport.

We can handle all arrival times and flights. Our driver will meet you and bring you to our headquarters in Mukono Town for orientation and placement support.

About one week before you travel, you will receive an email with clear details about your arrival, pick-up, and your first few days in Uganda.

    Indkvartering

Volunteers are given a private, lockable room (often shared with another international volunteer) in the home of your host organization's director. Most homes have electricity, western toilets, and running water, although frequent outages do occur. Once a volunteer commits to join us, and a particular host program is selected, full details about location and accommodation are then provided. Bed linens and mosquito nets are provided, but bring a pillow as they're not commonly used in Uganda.

    Mad og drikkevarer

Volunteers receive three meals a day, made with local Ugandan food. Common meals include matooke (steamed banana), posho (maize meal), potatoes, rice, and seasonal vegetables. These are usually served with peas, beans, or groundnut sauce, and sometimes beef or fish. Breakfast is often tea with bread.

Vegetarians and vegans are welcome. Dairy is uncommon in many areas. If you want extra variety, you can easily add fresh fruit and vegetables from local markets.
