    Om programmet

🌍 Medi Trip: Mental Health & Psychology PlacementAre you thinking about volunteering abroad?

Take on a life-changing opportunity to deepen your professional portfolio while contributing to critical healthcare services. Work directly with underprivileged, at-risk, and vulnerable populations, and learn first-hand about compassion, care, and the complex realities of mental health in a developing country.

    Who We Are

Medi Trip Placements is founded and led by a qualified medical professional. Clinically guided, medically focused, and patient-centred, we position ourselves at the very heart of community health.

We collaborate only with the most capable local professionals and use our expertise to select placements that allow volunteers to gain meaningful experience while also strengthening local health and social welfare services. Each volunteer is carefully matched with a setting aligned to their area of interest, under supervision from experienced, highly respected practitioners.

Mental Health in the CommunityThe Challenge

Mental disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide, with DSM-V disorders affecting between 18–36% of populations regardless of economic status. While global frameworks such as the WHO’s Mental Health Action Plan exist, many low- and middle-income countries face severe barriers to implementation.

The result is a high burden of untreated illness, including depression, psychosis, substance abuse, and suicide. Limited inpatient capacity, resource shortages, and few qualified specialists mean countless individuals and families remain unsupported for years—deepening cycles of poverty, stigma, and exclusion.

    our Mission

This placement positions you within a major outpatient mental health service, a frontline setting where vulnerable patients from across the community seek assessment, treatment, and hope. The facility functions as both a referral hub and a point of continuity for individuals living with acute and chronic mental health conditions.

You will become part of a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and clinical officers, working to deliver essential care despite the constraints of limited resources. Your mission is not to replace local professionals but to support, learn, and contribute where possible, while developing a profound understanding of the challenges of mental health in low-resource settings.

What You Will Experience and Contribute

    • Patient Assessments and Clinical Pathways

      • Observe patient intake interviews, mental status examinations, and diagnostic discussions.

      • Learn how local teams prioritise urgent cases such as psychosis, substance-induced crises, or suicide attempts.

      • Support the documentation process, shadowing case reviews and follow-up plans.

    • Treatment and Care Delivery

      • Witness the administration of psycho-pharmaceutical treatment (the main therapeutic modality available).

      • Accompany psychiatric nurses during ward checks and follow-up consultations.

      • Observe how medication regimes are managed in environments with intermittent supply challenges.

    • Psychosocial Support and Counselling

      • Assist in group therapy or one-on-one sessions where translation allows.

      • Participate in psycho-education sessions for patients and family members, covering relapse prevention, substance misuse, or coping strategies.

      • Help staff deliver structured counselling where time and resources are scarce.

    • Crisis Management

      • Support the team in providing immediate care to individuals in acute mental health crisis.

      • Observe emergency de-escalation techniques, suicide risk interventions, and stabilisation protocols.

    • Community and Family Engagement

      • Learn how families are integrated into care, often as the only long-term support system available.

      • Participate in community education campaigns addressing stigma, substance misuse, and mental health awareness.

      • Join outreach visits where possible, extending services to marginalised groups unable to reach the clinic.

    • Research, Reporting, and Reflection

      • Compile an observational report at the conclusion of your placement, highlighting patient journeys, systemic challenges, and lessons for global practice.

      • Share feedback and ideas that may inspire innovation or strengthen partnerships.

    Why It Matters

Your presence extends the reach of an overstretched system. You provide encouragement to patients, extra capacity to staff, and bring international attention to often invisible struggles. Beyond the direct impact, you will leave with skills, stories, and insights that enhance your career and strengthen your ability to advocate for mental health as a global priority.

    Why Your Contribution Matters

    Yes—you will make a difference.
Volunteers bring not just skills but also time, empathy, and a spirit of solidarity. By engaging with patients, supporting staff, and documenting experiences, you strengthen existing services, highlight gaps, and inspire hope.

This placement may also include outreach/community activities—taking services directly to those who cannot reach the clinic.

    The Nature of Medical Volunteering

Medical volunteering is not easy. It is demanding, confronting, and emotionally intense. Volunteers often encounter situations that may leave them saddened or shocked. But equally, they are inspired—by the resilience of patients, the dedication of staff, and the strength of communities facing adversity.

This is what makes the experience profound, unforgettable, and transformative.

    Practical Considerations

    • Visa & Permits
All international medical volunteers are required to obtain a visa and a professional practice permit. (Details provided on registration.)

    • Medical Practice Fee
USD 50 per week, as mandated by the Ministry of Health.

    • Use of Fees
Fees cover coordination, supervision, and facilitation of your placement. They also include a direct contribution to local partners hosting and mentoring volunteers.

    Safety & Security

As a volunteer you are also a guest. You will be supported by coordinators and supervisors at every step, but you are also expected to act responsibly, respect local customs, and prepare as you would for any international professional deployment.

    Final Word

    This is not ordinary volunteering.
This is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with frontline professionals, contributing to one of the world’s most pressing but under-resourced health priorities.

Your time and presence can shine a light, add value, and make an impact that echoes far beyond your placement.
