    Om programmet

The project is a riding academy on the island of Crete near the city of Heraklion. The project is run by a Greek aid organization, which cares for the 30 animals currently living here with much love and respect. The heart of the facility is the riding school, which specializes in therapeutic riding, among other things. The facilities are open to the public as much as possible to allow visitors to come into contact with the horses and ponies.

The academy offers a wonderful place to visit to learn all about the proper handling as well as the species-appropriate keeping of horses or to impart one's own knowledge. Due to the large number of horses, the organization is happy to have motivated volunteers to assist in caring for the horses, grooming them, taking them for walks and overall spending time with them.

The goal of the project is to take care of the animals in the best possible way and at the same time to teach the volunteers how to care for and train horses.

    Typisk dag

As a volunteer at this horse-focused project on Crete, you'll take on a variety of meaningful and hands-on tasks that directly contribute to the care and well-being of the animals. Your daily duties may include feeding the horses, mucking out the stables, helping maintain the grounds, and assisting with daily training sessions. Depending on your experience, you may also support the riding school or even take part in therapeutic riding and hippotherapy sessions.

Your day might begin with organizing supplies needed for the facility and making sure the grounds are clean and orderly. The remainder of your working hours will be spent with the horses—feeding, grooming, exercising, and giving them the attention they need to stay healthy and happy.

If you already have experience working with horses, you’ll be given more responsibility and may assist in riding lessons or in supporting specialized sessions such as therapeutic riding and hippotherapy. Therapeutic riding uses horses to support the emotional, physical, cognitive, and social development of people with special needs. Hippotherapy, on the other hand, is particularly beneficial for individuals with musculoskeletal or movement disorders. Throughout all activities, the welfare of the horses is a top priority.

You’ll typically work five days a week, around six hours per day. This leaves you plenty of free time in the afternoons and on weekends to relax, explore the local surroundings, enjoy the nearby beach, or plan excursions around the island.

    Fritidsaktiviteter

Crete, the largest Greek island located in the southern Aegean, is a place where ancient culture, breathtaking nature, and modern life harmoniously meet. Known as the “island of the gods,” Crete combines rugged mountain landscapes with deep gorges, idyllic villages, vibrant cities, and crystal-clear beaches—making it one of Europe’s most popular travel destinations. The air is often filled with the scent of thyme, sage, and oregano, thanks to the widespread cultivation of aromatic herbs. Agriculture plays a key role in the island's economy, with vineyards, fruit orchards, and especially olive groves shaping the landscape. Crete is among the EU’s top olive oil exporters, and in Kavousi, northeastern Crete, you’ll even find one of the oldest olive trees in the world.

Administratively, the island is divided into four prefectures: Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Lassithi. Heraklion, the capital and largest city, is a lively university town full of youthful energy—and also where your volunteer project is based. Just around 12 kilometers from your placement, the city offers a variety of attractions that make it perfect for exploring after your project work.

One of the highlights of Heraklion is its picturesque Venetian harbor and historic old town. But the absolute must-see is the Palace of Knossos—Crete’s most famous archaeological site and a place steeped in myth and legend. Learn about the story of the Minotaur, explore the labyrinthine ruins, and discover the roots of the Ionian civilization. If you're under 25, you even get free entrance—just ask our local project team for details. For more history, head to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, home to one of the most important collections of Minoan artifacts. This period is often referred to as the cradle of European culture.

Another great city trip takes you to Chania, often considered one of Crete’s most beautiful cities. With its romantic Venetian harbor, lighthouse, historic old town, and the Hasan Pasha Mosque, it offers the perfect mix of culture, charm, and coastal flair.

For nature enthusiasts, Crete is an ideal destination. The island’s mountainous terrain and wild gorges provide incredible opportunities for hiking and outdoor adventure. The Samaria Gorge, one of the longest in Europe, is a popular route through dramatic scenery. Or challenge yourself with a hike up Pachnes, Crete’s second-highest peak, located in the White Mountains. Its lunar-like landscape offers a truly unique hiking experience.

If you’re drawn more to the sea than the mountains, Crete won’t disappoint. Head to Preveli Beach, where a heart-shaped rock rises from the water—making it a favorite photo spot. Elafonisi Beach is another must-see, famous for its turquoise waters and rare pink sand.
