    Om programmet

    In Ghana, children with special needs often face significant challenges and are frequently not seen as valued individuals. Sadly, some are abandoned or even harmed at birth because they are wrongly viewed as a curse. There is a lack of support and resources for their education and development, and many of these children end up in orphanages where they seldom receive visitors.

    To make a difference, we urgently need volunteers who can step in and help teach these children essential life skills. This includes simple activities like dressing, brushing their teeth, and other everyday tasks. Volunteers also contribute to boosting their intelligence and creativity through engaging crafts and games, which encourage the children to play and interact with one another.

    Our program for children with special needs takes place in various settings, including health care facilities, orphanages, and private homes. Unfortunately, many centers lack play materials and educational resources. That's why we encourage volunteers to bring simple supplies like paper, clothes, and learning aids designed for children with disabilities. Above all, the most important thing to bring is a warm heart and a friendly smile. Your presence can truly brighten their lives!

    This project is located in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast

    What You Can Bring

    There is a lack of play materials at most centres. Volunteers can bring papers,  cloths, visual learning aids, disability learning aids, crafts and art supplies, which are much needed. Most importantly, you bring a big heart and smile.

    What we expect from you

    You must be passionate about autistic people, be Ready to assist placement staff to take care of them, and have the ability to address their needs and give attention to them.

    What you can expect from us

    Our staff is available to you 24/7 to give any necessary support. We will assign one staff member to take care of your needs.

    Who You will Work with

    Volunteers work closely with other teachers and staff and report to the director of the school on assignments and also when you have any issues at the school. Volunteers are also paired with other volunteers if any, to work on similar projects.

    How Do I Get to the Placement

    On the first day, volunteers will be taken to the centre. Our staff will show volunteers how to get to the placement, the directions to take, the particular vehicle, and the amount to pay for the transportation. This is repeated the next day if the volunteer thinks he still can't make it until the volunteer can make his/her way. The same is done for the returning to the home-stay after the school ends.

    Fritidsaktiviteter

    Volunteers have the opportunity to explore the 16 regions of Ghana over the weekend. Each region boasts its own unique culture and tourist attractions. Volunteers should read more about Ghana’s tourist sites to better understand where their interests lie.

    We assist volunteers in selecting tourist destinations, provide advice on safety measures and accommodations, and recommend tour guides if needed. There are various attractions to visit, such as a monkey sanctuary, a safari ride in Mole National Park, waterfalls, an open street market, and a museum.

    During the weekdays, volunteers can visit shopping and market centers after their volunteer duties, before dinner. The SFLIG Volunteer House is located just 30 minutes from the beach at Kokrobite, where volunteers can relax or swim at several beaches and resorts after volunteering hours. They can also spend the weekend at one of the lovely beach houses, which offer numerous fun activities.

    Additionally, the volunteer house is only 15 minutes away from the largest shopping mall in Ghana, West Hills Mall. The mall features many large grocery stores that stock a variety of foreign products, along with a movie theater, game centers, a pub, forex services, ATMs, and a wide selection of restaurants serving local, Chinese, Indian, and other continental cuisines.

     Airport pickup is included in the volunteer program fee to ensure a safe and smooth arrival experience.

    Volunteers will be picked up upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra by an authorized SFLIG Volunteers representative.

    Prior to arrival, volunteers are asked to share their flight details and a recent photo to help with easy identification. Our local representative will also share their contact details and photo in advance to ensure a secure and clear meeting point.

    Free airport Wi-Fi is available upon arrival. Volunteers are encouraged to connect to Wi-Fi and communicate with the assigned representative if needed.

    Our team monitors arrival times to ensure timely pickup. From the airport, volunteers are transported directly to their accommodation.

    We prioritize safety, clear communication, and comfort from the moment you arrive in Ghana

    Arrival & Orientation

    Upon arrival, volunteers receive an orientation that includes:

    * Introduction to the local area and community

    * Cultural guidance and expectations

    * Health and safety information

    * Transportation and daily logistics

    * Program expectations and schedule overview

    This helps volunteers settle in quickly and feel confident in their new environment.

    Accommodation Options

    Volunteers may stay at the SFLIG Volunteers House or with a carefully selected host family, depending on availability and the information provided during the application process. Both options offer a safe and supportive environment and allow volunteers to experience Ghanaian culture and community life.

    Safety & Quality

    Host families and accommodations are carefully selected and regularly reviewed to ensure they meet our standards for safety, hygiene, and comfort. Our team maintains regular contact to ensure volunteers feel supported throughout their stay.

    Emergency Assistance

    In the unlikely event of an emergency, our local team is available to provide immediate support and guidance. We ensure volunteers always know who to contact and how to access assistance.

    Room Arrangements

    Location

    The SFLIG Volunteers House and project locations are situated in Krispo city, near Accra. The area provides convenient access to local markets, transportation, and community facilities, while allowing volunteers to experience everyday life in Ghana

    Our Commitment

    We aim to create an experience where volunteers feel secure, welcomed, and fully supported, allowing them to focus on making meaningful impact and enjoying their time in Ghana

    Mad og drikkevarer

    Three meals per day are provided as part of the volunteer program to ensure volunteers feel comfortable, well supported, and able to focus on their work.

     Breakfast

    Basic breakfast groceries are provided daily, allowing volunteers to prepare their own breakfast according to their preferences. Typical items include oats, eggs, bread, butter, peanut butter, tea, coffee, milk, and similar essentials. This flexible approach allows volunteers to eat at their own pace and according to personal dietary needs.

    Lunch

    Lunch is usually light and refreshing, often consisting of fresh seasonal fruits such as bananas, oranges, watermelon, pineapple, and apples. This keeps meals healthy and suitable for the warm climate.

     Dinner

    Dinner is a balanced mix of local Ghanaian and international-style meals. Common dishes may include rice, noodles, yam, potatoes, spaghetti, and other nutritious options. This gives volunteers the opportunity to experience local cuisine while still enjoying familiar foods.

     Weekends & Cultural Exchange

    On weekends, basic food ingredients are provided so volunteers can prepare their own meals. Many volunteers enjoy cooking together, sharing recipes, and introducing foods from their home countries. This creates a fun cultural exchange experience and allows volunteers to enjoy meals they may be craving.

    Oplysninger ved ankomst

    Volunteers are free to arrive on any day of their choice, but we advise volunteers to arrive on Fridays or Saturdays for them to have some rest and settle in before volunteer duties start on Monday. (Volunteers are also allowed to determine when they want to start upon arrival). Volunteers can arrive at any time of the day, but arriving in the evenings means volunteers will have to spend a long time at the airport due to long queues because most flights arrive in the evening. Therefore, volunteers can look for flights that arrive mid-morning or early afternoon.

    Our representative will pick up volunteers to the volunteer house.  Volunteers can extend their length of stay upon arrival.

    This placement is available throughout the year. It runs as a school curricular and as an after-school program.
